MAURICE BENARD STATE OF MIND with TRISTAN ROGERS

This week's episode I'm joined by Tristan Rogers. Tristan was born in Melbourne Australia and is best known for portraying Robert Scorpio on General Hospital.
He also portrayed Colin Atkinson on The Young and The Restless and most recently won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Digital Drama Series for his role as Doc in the Amazon series, Studio City.
Tristan talks to me growing up in Australia and his journey from playing drums in a band, to acting, to becoming a DJ before making the trip to Los Angeles and joining General Hospital. We talk about his early days on GH, working with Anthony Geary, Genie Francis, Jack Wagner and working with and romancing Elizabeth Taylor.

The period of Robert Scorpio, Tristan Rogers, and Holly Sutton, Emma Samms, was a huge phenomenon in the 1980's. At least that's the way I remember it not wanting to miss an episode with them back then. Thanks for getting Tristan on the show. Great to see and hear his stories.

I was in elementary school and used to race home and watch the last half hour of general hospital before going out and playing football. I went back and watched a lot of the old Luke Laura Robert and Holly stuff on KZbin late last year. Throwing Jimmy Lee Holt in there was an awesome refresher for having the character Austin, his son, come in. After 40 years it was perfect timing for the introduction of that character.

The Robert, Luke, holly triangle was a huge storyline. For me the golden era of GH was between 1981 and 1985, 85 was the transition from Holly to Anna and Robin.

Been watching Tristan on GH since I was a kid. Everyone talks about the Luke and Laura era but Tristan's Robert Scorpio was equally fantastic. Wish they'd give him juicer roles, he's fantastic.

I ❤ Tristan Rogers. During the pandemic, I revisted the Asian Quarter storyline that introduced us to Robin Scorpio. Loved Tristan and Kimberly together. Also rewatched his initial storyline where Robert meets Luke and Laura and travel to Cassadine island. Had such a crush. He's like the James Bond of GH.

Great interview. I started watching GH in 1982 as a 15 year old because I saw Emma Samms. I kept watching because Robert Scorpio became my favorite character on any TV show. Tristan could play Robert as a funny guy and also as a tough bad ass spy/police commissioner. Robert and Holly are my favorite couple. In think back in the Gloria Monty days the actors had more wiggle room to play. She actually listened to her actors and appreciated their input. There was more time then too. Now everything is done so fast, it's very different. Those days were a special time for GH. I started watching GH around 9 years old. 1980. The Luke/ Laura/ Robert era was a phenomenon! I was hooked as a 9/10 year old. Scorpio has been my favorite since then! And so I thank you for this! Loved it! Tristan is an icon!

I STILL loved his expression, when he turned to Felicia, when she learns that Maxie had been hiding Louise, now Bailey Louise in plain sight the whole time via Brook Lynn and Felicia is still taking this all on. That she has seen her grand daughter, and had held her. AND she turns to Robert and says, "You've been hunting all over the globe for months trying to find her." AND asks him, "What he thinks?!?!" AND Robert has this huge ear to ear smile, and smirk on his face, and says, "I think you're daughter is brilliant!!!!"

@@MBStateOfMind I would be interested to hear from some of the wives of stars. I know a lot of them choose to live a private life. Is it hard seeing your husband or wife kiss all these different attractive people. How does your career affect your spouses? I often wonder this. It would be difficult and probably affect someone mentally. I guess it takes an incredibly secure person. I know at the end of the day it is a career. I just want to know how they handle that. Some of these women would make any woman insecure. 😊

HOWEVER what I'm often impressed by, is that day time stars, seem in many ways to have the longest marriages, at least as far as I as I have seen from many different soap operas, from actors like Deidre Hall whose an icon on DOOL. AND just other marriages on GH. AND that some like Jonathon Jackson, the original Lucky Spencer and Rebecca Herst who plays Liz both met their spouses on GH. Obviously Maurice and Paula have had a long marriage Peter Bergmann from Y & R who plays Jack and before starred on "All My Children." And Eric Cane played by Susan Lucci though her character married several times, in real life, she was married to her husband and just saw that sadly in 2022 that he has passed away.

@@lovelylace4896 I've heard that too!!! AWKWARD!!! 😂 However, I do agree that it would be interesting to hear from some of their spouses!?!? I'm NOT sure that I could be that secure. AND yet some seem to able to have a more low key life and I'm sure their wives & spouses have made choices to stay out of the spotlight. AND wonder what they watch or choose NOT to watch. I know Steve Burton has had a strong marriage and Jason Thompson who played Patrick Drake and whose been playing Billy on Y & R, I was impressed by him and his relationship with his wife. Many many years ago, I was saddened that Frisco who was played by Jack Wagner had married his costar in real life, (Felicia Jones) Kristina Wagner got married and had twins but divorced and then remarried but divorced again. I've been very impressed by the relationship that Mau and Dominque (Dante) have in real life. That Maurice knew instantly he was the one to play his older son. Their chemistry is 100% real, but they are very close in real life and Dominique has sought for advice from him from time to time regarding marriage. You can tell pretty easily that he's a sensitive guy in real life. AND referred to their relationship as Mau being like a big brother to him!!! BUT...I STILL HAVE MUCH RESPECT FOR KIRSTEN and though they are divorced, how they put their daughter first was and is beautiful to me. AND that their friendship before, and I still believe how she spoke that they still love each other, just not in that way. Kirsten's is still my favorite "State of Mind" episode & Tyler Christopher's. BUT so is Dominque's due their friendship. A # of the actors have impressed me. AND also Chad's character on DOOL and when he had the actor who plays Sammie Brady. Mau was somewhat intimidated by her and was honest to say so, for all she's done. Her marriage has been long, and every anniversary her and her husband have a certain ritual, that Mau was honest, that he didn't think he would be secure enough do it. AND Kayla's character, I know she has remained married for decades. In High School I watched DOOL the most. BUT...it's never been quite the same as it was back then. I literally watched Luke and Laura's wedding, though I wasn't watching GH at the the time. BUT one childhood friend did due to her grandma. I originally watched the ones that my own grandma watched. You could tell that Tristan DEFINITELY doesn't like the limelight nor his wife. It's probably given many of them a bit more of a "normal life" walking around LA?!?! FAME always has a price, it seems!!!!

Oh please, another hour with Tristan spilling the GH tea! I could have gone down that rabbit hole all night listening to those stories, especially from that era of GH…which is when I, like many, became a super fan. Before then, it had been “one of my grandma’s stories” I used to watch with her on black and white tv when I was 5! Suddenly it was cool…Luke & Laura days. I wanted more inside stories with his relationship and acting with Tony and Genie. This was delightful and a nice break from the heavy stuff, as much as that’s the theme of your show, lately I think we all can use some lightening up. Liz Taylor and Tristan too?….always thought she knew what she was doing wanting in on that show, besides the popularity then….she snagged all the leading men! ….quite the broad. Thanks for this one.

I like that this was a focus on Tristan, and not just on Scorpio. I enjoy hearing things beyond the soap world. I saw Tristan Rogers at a charity event, along with Genie Francis, Finola Hughes, and Ian Buchanan, and they were all very engaging. Tristan Rogers seemed deeply invested in Scorpio's story, and didn't always agree with what the writers or audience wanted; he likes Scorpio to remain very characteristic. For that reason, I 100% get why Scorpio and Laura couldn't be together. In the Q&A I attended, he felt the same about Anna and Robert being together - that it didn't make sense to Scorpio's character. And, Elizabeth Taylor? I knew about Tony Geary, but not Tristan Rogers!!!! Bombshell!!! Also, now I need to see him DJ. Great interview!

He told a different story in SOD when Anna and Robert finally got back together. Called all the others 'fill-ins' and that it was always Anna for Robert. That she was the only one that made sense for Scorpio. That said I don't care what he thinks. R&A are IT for each other and outside of SW as Tiffany Finola is the only one Tristan has romantic chemistry with. R&H were a snoozefest to me. I only got into Scorpio again when Anna arrived.

Oh my gosh, I TOTALLY forgot that John Stamos was once upon a time, on GH!!!!! AND we mustn't forget, that Rick Springfield also played on GH as well!!!!

@@tammyboon6259 Yes, Rick Springfield was on GH from 1981 - 1983. Let's also remember Emma Samms, Antonio Sabato Jr. as Jagger Cates 1992 - 1994. Vanessa Marcil as Brenda Barret in the '90's. Rick Springfield would be a good one to interview since he is not only a famous actor but a famous singer still to this day. He doesn't seem to do too much acting these days however he still performs in short concerts some of his big hits and some of his new music from time to time and also does interviews.

@@Ken-vk8pb A couple of actors I have to look up. BUT did somewhere else mention Vanessa Marcil who played Brenda Barrett. Rick Springfield came back as he played Patrick Drake's alcoholic estranged father for a few years. I just looked some of them up. YES!!! Emma (Holly) I mentioned her too. I wasn't watching when Antonia Sabato Jr was on. AND I ACTUALLY have never watched the whole "Stone" storyline. HOWEVER...it's one that I would like too!!!! He actually did a "State of Mind" but didn't watch it all, b/c i'd liked to see it from the beginning. Of course I followed Robin's HIV story.

I loved this interview. I met Tristan and Jackie back in 82, I believe. When they went around to different malls to meet the fans. I have watched GH for over 45 years. GH was the best back in late 70s and 80s. Thank you for having him on here. 💕

Wow ! I loved reliving these GH memories. I remember very well when Tristan came on the show .He’s still one of my favorites .
