This requiem is special. It doesn't feel harsh or dramatic but rather reverential and redemptive. This is what I expect heaven to sound, a welcoming warmth that takes us away from our mundane problems. It has to be one of the most gorgeous pieces ever written. I had tears in my eyes in Agnus Dei and In Paradisum before even realising what I had just heard.

I well remember, one chilly day in May around 1985, I was visting York, and as I stepped inside the minster, I heard this music. The sun was streaming through the west window and what with the beauty of the scene and the music it was ovewhelming. I felt tears come to my eyes.

It's F#7 add 9 chord
@PuddintameXYZ
@PuddintameXYZ Жыл бұрын
It's the second to last chord for me, which is C(aug4)? The last one is just an F#7, btw, which is the V7/V, no G#'s. Still great, though edit: My bad. Totally ignored the G# in the organ. It starts out just an F#7, then adds the G# a quarter note in.
@annakimborahpa
@annakimborahpa Жыл бұрын
1. Using American jazz theory, I would classify the second to the last chord of the ending as a C Major/G add #11. 2. Although the key signature is five sharps, which is usually the key of B Major or G# Minor, the tonality is modal so I classify the key as F# Mixolydian. 3. The cadential chords of the last three measures are B Minor, D Major/A, C Major/G add #11, F#7, then add 9. 4. Using European figured bass chord function analysis that is based on the ionian mode (c to c octave white notes on the piano), I would classify these last four chords in the key of F# Major as iv, VI 6/4, #IV 6/4, I b7 then add 2. 5. That final dominant 9th chord is the closest chord humans have that resembles the combined fundamental and dominating upper partials in the overtone series of a single fixed pitch note, hence its cosmic and universal sounding effect on the listener.

Comme la première lumière de l'aube, cette musique ouvre les yeux à de nouvelles promesses et à toutes les merveilles de la nature. I had the great pleasure of singing it twice. I could not listen to this without singing along. It opens my heart like no other Requiem (although the Brahms and the Verdi come very close!).

Unrelated - the word requiem evokes - to me - thoughts of Brahms, I was surprised to learn that it wasn't until his german requiem premiered before he started to become popular, when he was about 35. I also read a catholic requiem is basically prayers for the dead where as a german requiem emphasises the living. It seemed so strange to me a master of the instrumental form became popular through vocal music. That and the time frame - it was not written until about 10 years after the death of Robert Schumann, it seems so strange to me how he could write such wonderful music and for some of the greatest musicians in the world praising your music and still not become popular, well I guess the same thing happened to Schubert but I think he knew everything was just about to open up for him and breakthrough into a world of success and public gratification. When I hear requiem I always think of Brahms. It's funny how we go from modern germ cell composition in one video to ancient Gregorian chant influences in the next. Keeps things interesting I guess not always focusing on the same kind of music. Me I'm the same way I listen to so many different kinds of music, keeps things fresh.

+scottbos68 Yes and Schubert had at least his Lieder that were very popular with the crowd, for Bruckner it wasn't until he wrote something like 7 symphonies, at the end of his life, that he was finally recognized... well, better late than never I guess! Dare I suggest this Requiem is more beautiful than the Fauré?

+Sathrandur They are quite different pieces of music... I think I like both just as much!

Yes! And you'd be justified in doing so. Both are wonderful in their way, but I prefer this one, too. I find this to be far more expressive and honest. But I also prefer to my music to be chromatic and rhythmically complex, so I have that bias. It's a totally subjective thing. But I much prefer to listen to this than the Faure; and I far prefer the Faure over the Mozart. Going in the other direction, I'll take Penderecki's Polish Requiem over this one. That's a piece of unending gorgeousness, too, like this one, but even more so.

Both requiems are equally beautiful in their own way and both of them convey a same message , that is, death is peaceful.

Use to be customarily played (by classical disk jockeys) during Final Exam periods by the college FM radio station WTJU at University of Virginia "Final Exam Marathon" years ago-don't know if "Final Exam Marathon" still exists or even if the low power radio station still exists. Evocative of moving on,graduating to an uncertain,dangerous and gloomy future and seeing one's classmates featured in the obituaries from time to time.
