Your "Mercedes" analogy was actually very enlightening and an excellent teaching tool. I had never thought of the "Mauser" weapon system in that light, however it would be difficult to argue with the fact that much of the weapon systems manufactured by the German people at that time were indeed extremely high quality, as they are to this day. Always so much fun & entertaining, and of course educational. I have a Turkish Mauser, I don't know why I have a date of 1896 on the brain, I'm not 100% on that, it's just what is in my memory. It's still in the box, has been for 23 yrs ever since I bought it. The trigger assy is in a plastic bag full of some kind of spackled grease and it came with about 5 of those small mags and about 25 rds. I've never shot it, I've only taken it out twice, once after I bought it and then again like 20 yrs later to show it to my boy, he was about 10 yrs old, he couldn't handle it obviously, maybe still not yet, he's almost 12 but I'll be giving it to him. I bought it for $75 before 2000 and what drew my attn to it was that we went on assignment as a family with my dad to Incirlik Air Base in Adana, Turkey from 76 - 78 when I was 10 - 12 yrs old and I loved it, well, I was a kid, maybe a little older and I would've hated it like most of the adults Lol. Thanks for your awesome shows.
@R_S4_B52 жыл бұрын
the russian capture is actually pretty rare, its the first modell that got produced and serviced 1935 if i remember right because its all machined. For example the iron sight at the front is missing what we call "Kornschutz", the round barrier around the iron sight on the left, if it has grooves or notches you could put a guard around it but if not dont do that. second thing i dont know the english word for it but the rings that hold the Barrel with the wood is in one piece and not welded together its the second part thats from the first models that came out of the factory and those are machined as well. The negative thing is the wood its called "schichtholz" they glued the wood together and thats why it has red spots all over the place and is not sanded from the refurbishing, thats what they did back in the day 1943-1945ish it was cheaper but a lot heavier thats why the butstock has that cup at the end that prevents the wood from cracking. On the older versions they used "nussbaumholz" nut wood in english i think? with just a rough small metall plate not going around the buttstock. So all in all youve got a first Gen Machined barrel, the iron sight and the hold rings everything else is later in the war so the newer models. If the other one has a iron sight that cant be adjusted its a Mp40 sight what they called volkssturmgewehr 98. and theres the small piston missing at the front greetings from germany

Nice flashback! The first rifle I ever bought was a Yugo Mauser. My dad and I tore ours down and did the best we could to make 'em stand out a bit better. One of my sons has been shooting it with me and today I set about fitting the correct sling. Hmm, the front fixed sling is supposed to be on the left....why oh why is mine on the right..... Flash back to the days before kids when I was cooking off Cosmoline in my new wife's oven and how difficult it was to fit the front sight hood. Thankfully a few minutes in the garage was all it took to flip her over. Thanks as always for your videos!

Growing up with automatic detachable box magazine firearms was fascinating until actually using some. What's NOT to love about the convenience and simplicity of fixed tubular magazine fed long guns as well as THESE fixed boxed magazine rifles that can be loaded or reloaded via strip clips? Guns like these are some of my favorite because of their simplicity. 🥰 Wouldn't need more than 20 rounds anyway, 5 should be enough, while 10 would be comfortable and 40+ would be excessive. 🤪

Always a pleasure to see a kar98k in action. I've got two of them myself, a Russian Capture and a Balkan capture example. My RC is a DOT marked, made in 1943 in Waffe-Werke Brunn, in the Czech Republic. It's neat since it is a mid-war example with an early or pre-war stock and a late-war, stamped triggerguard and floor plate. It's waffenamts are intact as well. My Balkan capture, well its a little different. It was made in the Mauser-Obrendorf plant in 1944 so it's a BYF 44. The milled triggerguard matches the receiver and barrel but everything else is a total mismatch. The exposed metal on it is nearly in the white, the bluing is pretty much completely gone. But beneath the wood line, all the bluing is intact so it's weird. Another thing is that the waffenamts are completely defaced, on the barrel and the receiver. o_O Who ever used it after "liberating" it from the Wehrmacht must have really hated them. The only thing missing from this video was a bayonet charge. But other than that, excellent video. ^_^

After the war, many of these rifles went with the Jewish fighters when they went to the middle east. I believe it was a gift to my Dad from a friend.

yup some big boy calibers were standard issue back then. 30-06, 8mm mauser, would not wanna be on the receving end of these slugs. But NATO decided on lighter calibers to decrease weight. However, it would have been cool to keep the .30 cal in machine guns instead of the 762x51 nato round which seems to be standard in almost all medium machine guns today.

The United States Army could have adopted the Mauser 98 right after the Spanish American War, manufacturing it on license. But the U.S. Army was intent on an "American-designed" infantry rifle. So what Springfield did was take the Mauser bolt action and stripper clip and design a bolt action around it, the iconic M1 Springfield. The M1 Springfield was and still is an excellent bolt action rifle. But really, the U.S. Army could have saved themselves the trouble by simply adopting the Mauser just like it did with the Krag-Jorgensen bolt action rifle in 1892. After the Spanish American War, the U.S. Army studied captured samples of the Mauser-built bolt action 98 chambered for the 7mm x 57mm cartridge, the "Spanish Hornet". The U.S. Army immediately recognized a superior weapon to its Krag-Jorgensen. The U.S. Government didn't save anything by building the M1 Springfield. The U.S. Government had to pay Mauser royalties for using the Mauser bolt action and the Mauser stripper clips, even though the U.S. Army used the .30-06 cartridge, not the Mauser 7.92 x 57mm. During World War I, the U.S. Government understandably stopped paying royalties to Mauser. After the war, Mauser sued the U.S. Government in the Hague International Court in Belgium for non-payment of royalties. Mauser won the case and the U.S. Government ended up paying several millions of dollars to Mauser. Naturally the U.S. Government in 1917-18 would have found itself arming the G.I. Doughboys with exact replicas of the enemy Mauser 98, an embarrassing situation. There was later precedent in the 1939 Finnish-Soviet War where the Finnish Army's standard battle rifle was the Russian-built Mosin Nagant bolt action rifle.

And they were biult in the Concertration Camp in Mauthausen. Stamped BNZ 43 and a single S Rune. And they are only built with these stamps in that year. Just in case you did not know. Nice one with some extra history to tell.

I have a 1938 original Nazi Kar98K (not a Russian capture) and it still shoots like a dream! The Germans sure knew how to design a gun!

Still so green there. All brown and mud coloured here in the UK. Nice shooting as always.

I would like to pass on a little info as to the K98K's. The German issue bolts prior to 1943 were in the white. This was so because the metal used was so dense, and hard, an alloy of stainless steel mixed with tungsten, that it simply would not hold bluing, simply put, nothing would stay on the metal for very long. Germans being Germans they left the bolts and butt-plates in white for aesthetic reasons. The Russians developed a type of bluing that actually did adhere to the bolt and when they refurbished them at the end of the war they came out in dark stain. Just so's you know. If you get one in white they were not polished except at the Oberndorf factory.

I Love the 98k I've shot one. Even in England lol. How about one day a video of the Mauser 98k versus the North Enfield 303. Be interesting to hear what you think is the better rifle. Great video .
