General Butler was known as an “enlisted man’s general.” He would never ask anyone to do what he hasn’t done or won’t do. When Butler retired he gave his home address to those he commanded and told them to contact him if they needed his help. Many did, and he helped them.

I read his book, war is a racket in h.s. While the the other kids were reading romeo & juliet. I couldn't for the life of me understand the old English writing, it board me to death& I was gonna fail 10th grade English. So Mr. O'Brien handed me war is a racket. I couldn't put it down. I went from a D to an A ! Even won an award for my book report. He said when he handed me it, that it was his personal copy & the words in this book actually matter. Ohh was he right. It changed my life.

I always found it fascinating when I took U.S history in college how high school U.S history only makes the U.S look great in wars. War and the military is an extension of politics. Sometimes politics does the right thing, but usually the wrong thing. In Smedley Butler's time there was a heavy influence of rich companies trying to use American foreign policy to further their needs. Still happens. But none of this was or is a surprise or a great mystery. So if you joined and didn't understand this, that's on you. So stop whining about it. The military is necessary because countries like Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran aren't just going to quit if we didn't have one. Terrorism isn't going away because you hate your own military. Presidents will continue to exercise the ability to use the military to further their perception of the interests of the U.S. So get over it.
