Mavis Staples on what it takes to keep singing at 80

Soul and gospel legend and multiple Grammy winner Mavis Staples is a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and a Kennedy Center honoree. She’ll also be turning 80 next month. The Newport Folk Festival organized all-star birthday tributes in Nashville, Los Angeles, and at the Apollo Theater in New York, where she spoke with CBS’ Anthony Mason.

I had a crush on Mavis as kid. My dad took us to see the Staple Singers perform and once grown I had happened to see her walking for exercise on the South Shore beach. She was alone and there was no people around. She had a stick and I said, "Hi." She replied back,"Hi." I kept it moving to respect her space,but it was such a shock to see her. Now,she's 80yrs old and still got a crush.😆😆😆😆

Mavis Staples born in Chicago, Illinois on July 10, 1939 is an American rhythm and blues and gospel singer, actress, and civil rights activist. She has recorded and performed with her family's band The Staple Singers and also as a solo artist. She is celebrating her 81st birthday today July 10, 2020 Staples was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Blues Hall of Fame in 2017.

Mavis is all over todays music. She has a track with Arcade Fire, guested on a Gorillaz track alongside Pusha T, her most recent album is produced by Ben Harper, the last two records were produced by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, and she guested on a Hozier track just last year... I think it's safe to say that Mavis disagrees with you about "todays music". It's this ridiculous bias people of each generation develop... they always think they have the only real music.
