This is the best vibrato video I have ever watched! Thank you, Max!

As a 60 year old professional violist, teacher, Anglican cathedral choirmaster, organist and composer (who studied with some of the world's greatest violists and musicians), I find your KZbin sites AMAZING AND WONDERFUL! I would love to study with you because I think you are a great natural born teacher. I wish I had a financial where-with-all to travel where you are and play music with you and learn. One is never too old to learn! Ken in Fresno

You have uncannily exposed a great mystery to me. I thought triplets were in essence stopping three strings simultaniusly. Your vidio shows a double vibration of the distal joint and then a reseeding retreat a milisecond afterward. Excellant vidio! Youve given me food for thought. Excellant! I very much appreciate your toil in making this vidio. Please keep posted! I will refer back to this. This is new fresh technique ive never seen before.😅

Fascinating series. Not sure if you’ll read this now but I have a couple of questions. 1. How do you get your vibrato so fast? I’ve tried making it narrower but I just seem unable to move my hand very fast for that fabulous intense fast vibrato. Does it depend on one’s neurological makeup or percentage of fast-twitch muscles? 2. Having slowed down the Stern clip to quartet speed I notice he sometimes vibrates sharp of the note. I’ve been told by teachers this shouldn’t be done but I’ve noticed a lot of the greats do this and they always sound amazing.

to increase vibrato speed try short, light fast bursts, and see if you can gradually increase the length without getting tense. Thing of the bust of vibrato as a release of tension.. the lightness is key. Keep the amplitude focussed, not wild wide vib.

yes a lot of old school players play sharp. But it's just playing sharp it's not vibrating sharp .. ! By that I mean that the ear will hear whatever the note is directly in between the upward and downward swings of the vibrato -- if that centre is above the surrounding pitch (ie piano or orchestra) it will all sound sharp.

@@maxbailliemusic I’ll definitely try that exercise - thanks! Yes, I think tension is a big issue and ironically can slow down vibrato as well as. Appreciate you taking time to reply! 😊

@@maxbailliemusic Oh I see, yes quite complicated how the ear hears things. I slowed down the Stern clip to 0.25x at 3:33 he almost plays a D flat on the 4th finger C on the D string yet it sounds ok at full speed!

Hi Max! Which one is better for a beginner? Wrist or arm vibrato?

Hi Rhej, I'd say train both alongside each other.

Thank you! Curious. I see that you cradle the neck in your hand webbing or whatever that part is instead or some insane gravity defying miracle like menuhin balancing on 5 microns of thumb skin. Which is preferred and why?
@maxbailliemusic6 жыл бұрын
Hi Kelley, Thanks for your question- when I play there is some space between the webbing where my thumb joins my hand and the neck of the violin. Sometimes for the vibrato exercises I’ll let the neck rest deep in the hand. Main thing is that in assuming the basic position of the neck resting in the hand that it’s natural, not gripping and with a nice curve of the fingers into the fingerboard. Check out videos of your favourite players in action and see how they compare. Good luck!
