Max's reaction to the scan mechanic is about exactly what I expected from him, altho I don't blame him for not wanting to engage too much with it since it does slow down the pace of the game, but it's also a part of what helps and make Prime have its good own established atmosphere and lore, on top of certain parts of the game that absolutely want scan to be used. Bit of a shame 'cause it feels like Max has entered this game with the wrong kind of expectation or maybe trying to think that combat is the main dish in this game where Prime is advertised as a First Person Adventure and not a First Person Shooter game for a good reason.

In defense of the old "tank" controls, the game was designed with them in mind, which gives the game a feel of being more of a platformer then an actual shooter. Most of the enemies you get to fight will be in direct line of sight to use the lock-on system and having the weapons to quick swap with the c-stick, or secondary analog, comes really handy in this game since on later fights it becomes a lot more about choosing the right tool for the job rather then aimming.

While I generally prefer 2D Metroid for the fluidity of exploration and platforming elements, Prime absolutely nails worldbuilding, narrative and atmosphere in a way I don't really see from a lot of first-person games. It's less accurate to call Prime a first-person shooter akin to something like Halo since I think it's more fittingly described as a first-person adventure game. The shooting and action element isn't really the point in Prime at all. In fact a lot of the first-person stuff comes from the puzzles and especially scanning objects of interest to get more lore, which is my favorite aspect of gameplay across the trilogy.

I got it and saw the controllers... Watching this playthrough on stream, it was a bit aggravating for the chat to essentially be silenced by the mod whenever they tried to hint that he missed something useful/crucial (which would reduce the tediousness of backtracking when he'd potentially come back to that out-of-his-way area) and the mod's justification was "lol, they want to spoil the whole game". I seem to recall Max having much frustration with Symphony of the Night around the time when chat was suddenly silenced when they began dropping hints for a very vague thing and he began wandering aimlessly and grew annoyed that he had no idea where to go next (he was even confused as to why chat was in emoji mode to begin with, if I recall correctly). This lack of knowing where to go in a game with reduced mobility when compared to Super Metroid seemed to impact his overall opinion of the game and could have been completely avoided. (And no, I'm no advocating for chat to spell out every location of every secret in any Metroidvania he plays.) If I were him and more conscious of the chat's activity, I would have warned that power-drunk mod for (ironically) adding to the existing confusion and helplessness.

This was the first video game I ever played, and at the same time, my favorite video game of all time. The lore, the atmosphere, the music, the scans, the gameplay, everything. To me, this is a perfect game, and has tons of replayability. I hope you enjoy this game as much as I did 20 years ago. Seeing as how it's also your first time, I can't wait for the rage that may await in the Phazon Mines. Extra Note: In regards to the original controls, you could move and look around by jumping to carry your momentum, and if you got really good at it, you could go through a hall of Eyons and hit most of them without stopping. This goes for many rooms. The original controls still have a special place in my heart.

Also, after watching the Flaaghra fight, remember you can dash when locked on, it’s probably the fastest way to dash around between solar lights.

Knowing Max for so long (from videos mind you, there's a difference), I long expected Prime would be a hard sell. It's as far removed from an arcade experience as possible, it's constantly asking players to stop and read, and the dedicated FP perspective always threatens motion sickness (By the end of the night the Space Pirate lab stuff was clearly affecting him negatively). The upside to this is that he did at least experience the game a long time ago, so it wasn't completely unfamiliar ground. I don't think he dislikes it so far, but yeah I suspect the enthusiasm isn't as strong. Which is totally fine. As as much as I'd like to think "just stick with it a bit longer, you're past the worst", replaying the game this week doesn't instill me with confidence in that sentiment. ...The "gauntlet" has yet to reveal itself. Veterans know what I'm talking about. It's a late-game trial by fire, and it is _rough._

As a huge metroid fan who sadly missed out on playing prime. I have been loving the remaster. The camera, and aim are definitely a little cumbersome, for me. I mostly play fast pace fps on pc. So aiming with an analog stick is awkward. Also although I didn't have as much trouble as max, the scan visor is easy to forget about. You can be to busy, looking around with your eyes, and taking in the beautiful environments that scanning things slips your mind. I also don't think of using the scanner to solve puzzles. When I got to those doors, that requires you to scan the symbols on the walls, I assumed you need to collect items so I got stuck and felt stupid after only getting the ball, missile, and bomb. I did use the scanner in those rooms, but some how managed to not look at any of the runes on the walls. Maybe cut Max some slack. He's not much of a puzzle guy, and he's suffering from the "mental tax" streamers and let's players suffer.

I saw Max's streams of this beloved game of mine a couple of times on his twitch channel and here are my personal thoughts: After playing Super and Dread, he grew to love the IP because of mobility, game flow, combat and discovery. I think he approached Prime with this in mind and that ultimately hindered his experience because the game was designed in a different way. I think he wanted the game to allow him to flip and dip, run around and have crazy mobility options as well as fleshed out and cool combat sequences. Prime is none of those 2 things. While mobility and combat sure are there (and they are serviceable at best, not denying that) the game is more focused on exploration, on taking your time, on looking around, solving puzzles and inspecting the world, scanning anything and everything that might be of interest and overall charting the world. It is a slow, methodical and very atmospheric game from a first person camera. And I don't think that style really suits Max's tastes. That's why he said: "Scanning takes me out of the game" when he landed on Tallon IV. Scanning IS the game. On his stream he gave Prime a 8/10 because he respects what the game accomplished 21 years ago, but the backtracking, the lack of save stations/checkpoints, lackluster combat/mobility + the blurry thermal visor really hindered the experience for him. He even mentioned that if the game came out today exactly the same as it did 21 years ago, he would have given it a 7. And while some of the criticisms are definitely warranted (looking at you thermal visor and mobility/combat, ugh), some of it is lack of adapting to what the game is asking of you instead of brute forcing situations that he may find more exciting. I thought he would love it, but I guess not all great games are for everyone. And that's ok. At least he tried and appreciated it. Hopefully Prime 4 improves on those things so he and many others that share his view grow to like the Prime formula because to me it's absolutely fantastic what it brings to the gaming world as a whole. We rarely see first person "shooter" games focused on atmosphere and exploration. The game is almost flawless in my eyes because the game excels at what it set out to do, but there is 100% room for improvement since it aged in a couple of areas and that's where Prime 4 can capitalize on.
@colingraham4877 Жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s a little disappointing that he didn’t fall in love with it like he did Dread or Super. Prime is much more about atmosphere and exploration, and not so much intense action. I do agree that some of the backtracking in Prime is excessive, but I’m glad that Max is at least enjoying the game enough to finish it even if it isnt a knock outta the park like the other 2 in his mind.

@@colingraham4877 I don't think he is going to finish it, to be honest. The backtracking gets even more intense in the late game (if you know what I mean, aka artifacts). And also, the later bosses are tough for players that barely have any missiles and that's the case for him. If he continues he will struggle even more and knowing he isn't enjoying himself too much I think he probably just moved on already. I really do hope Prime 4 improves on the backtracking where there might be more than 1 option for progress at a time and perhaps more mobility options on top of cool combat abilities like a counter or a dash or a quick kill, etc all things that were there in Dread while keeping that atmosphere and immersion that we grew accustomed to loving. We will see.

I also didn't like the game all that much the first time I played it. I remember getting frustrated and getting lost and my first playthrough taking me around 18 hours. Especially when it came to finding the chozo artifacts. But by the time I got to the ending when you have all your abilities and traversing the world becomes easier and more fun I came around on it. And it was only when I went on to play prime 2 that the pace of the game really clicked with me and I understood the vision for what the game was trying to be and the proper gameplay loop and from that point on I really loved it. And my second playthrough of prime 1 was an absolute blast. For me it's a game that gets better every time I play it and having great knowledge of the map just means I can focus on really finding all the secrets and enjoying going from point a to b crit pathing and trying to beat it as quickly as possible. It really is a fantastic game but it definitely takes some time to see it. And I've beaten it like 7 or 8 times now. And every time I beat prime 1 it always leaves me wanting more and wanting to move on to playing prime 2 straight after. There really is no other game like it. And it makes me glad that it is a trilogy as as a package the trilogy offers up so much content and all of it put together is some of the best games I've ever played. Prime 4 has alot to live up to.
