@@Ladazotz nah, bloodborne is boring next to sekiro imo. could only stomach its one color scheme and lack of environment variety for so long...sekiro is lightyears ahead in combat and world design. max can compare the soulsborne series combat to action games all he wants, the combat in sekiro, while not as good as nioh or dmc, still destroys soulsborne's. feels like max and alot of ppl wanted another rpg from miyazaki. im glad he disagreed.

@@flamingmanure true that in combat it is not nearly as complex, but I feel like it hits the right balance of variety, simplicity and action. Yes sekiro dose have it's own ninja tools at the end of the day its main weapons is just a katana, yeah he can do alot with it but I would rather have options. Plus personally I prefer the whole slimy, diseased lovecraftian horror aesthetic to the samurai inspired one even if it can be a bit one note at times. On the topic of which I also feel bloodborne wins out in terms of lore and story, both in depth and thematic. I like how it evolves from a curse of were wolves into a conspiracy of men trying to harness something fundamentally greater than themselves, thus incurring the wrath of those same ancient, eldritch horrors I suppose its realy what your looking for in a game, personally I prefer bloodborne but to each there own

What about quality over quantity, i know for a fact none of the weapons in any of the souls games have the amount of polish and refinement that Sekiro offers with one weapon. Adding weapon arts and all of the charms/ prosthetic weapons makes for some insane combos that blow any dark souls game out of the water. Ive never enjoyed combat more than perfectly timing every deflect to destroy the posture of an enemy 3 times my size and while off gaurd kill them in 1 hit. Makes you feel like your the boss at the end of it, as compared to bloodborne/darksouls where you're just lucky to survive some of the bosses. For me, I appreciate Demon's Souls for its levels. There's no impossible space in Demon's Souls. It's like there's 5 mini dioramas that you're moving around. Take the Shrine of Storms for instance, when you're finally at the Beach after killing the Storm King, you can look back with the binoculars and trace each individual pathway that you took to navigate your way down there. We don't have magical elevators taking us to Bowser's Castle like Dark Souls 2. If you look at each world in a model viewer, you can see exactly how each one connects to itself and I feel like that was lost after the first Dark Souls (even that got a little funky at times with stuff like Demon Ruins and the Arch Trees in Tomb of the Giants.)

One thing that sets Bloodborne above the others for me is it's lore. I have fun with FromSoft's other games, but Bloodborne is the only one that captivated me even after I put down the controller. Some of my fondest memories of Bloodborne are just sharing and discussing lore theories surrounding the game's world and characters with other people. And funnily enough, it's the only one of the five that I genuinely tried to "role-play" rather then just playing it normally. I love this game, man.

It’s so weird how I feel the exact opposite about a lot of what you said regarding Sekiro. Now I love all these games but to me personally Sekiro is an absolute masterpiece. I was never really compelled to try ng+ on the souls games (always preferred to just start a new character since I feel a lot of the fun comes from trying a completely different build) but in Sekiro I ran through all the ng+ cycles and had so much fun with them. I’m not sure what it is exactly but something about Sekiro’s combat just feels so fucking perfect to me and now it’s just my zen game. Had a stressful week and I have a couple hours Friday evening I don’t want to do anything? I’ll just sit down and run through a playthrough of Sekiro

My biggest problem with Sekiro is the utter lack of gameplay variety and how the combat feels the same from the beginning to the end. In the other souls games, I'm playing the game differently in every single conceivable way by the halfway point. Be it magic of any kind or weapon, but in Sekiro I got to the Owl and realized that I haven't changed a _single_ thing about my gameplay. Gameplay is incredibly important to me.
@zerosolis6664
@zerosolis6664 4 жыл бұрын
@@somethingsomething9006 "I haven't changed a single thing about my gameplay." I just want to point out that Sekiro isn't supposed to tell you to change it up. Its on the player to make use of the different prosthetic tools, how they can work and play off of different enemies/bosses, Bestowal Ninjutsu, all the different combat arts (which, most of them are actually pretty good, have their own uses and strengths and weaknesses) making use of ceramic shards to distract enemies, fistful of ash to stun even bosses like corrupted monk, using oil to make sure an enemy burns when you use the Flame Vent, using the candies for stat boosts, etc. There's a lot in Sekiro it just focuses on quality with the options you have rather than having all these different options that aren't actually viable. I love DS3 but in general having too many different weapons with all basically the same way to play (hit R1 until it dies, maybe block) isn't the way to go. Magic is fun as hell though yes, and weapon arts in DS3 are great. But yeah. Instead in Sekiro it focuses on having the entire combat system revolve around your main weapon, and the other options you have. I'm not saying you have to like Sekiro, just explaining it.
@somethingsomething9006
@somethingsomething9006 4 жыл бұрын
@@zerosolis6664 Oh, don't get me wrong. I completely understand the design philosophy behind Sekiro, and you explained it very well. It's not that I want the game to tell me to change it up, I just want the ability to choose to do so. My problem with this system is that it heavily relies on you liking the weapon you're stuck with. What if I didn't like the katana? For the record, I didn't care much for the katana after a couple hours. I wanted a different weapon, or at least a different moveset. I think gameplay progression, and the ability to diversify your gameplay is infinitely more important than having one weapon, regardless of how good it is. Nioh did this amazingly. All weapons have completely different moves with a good sized move list, AND there were lots of magic and ninjitsu to choose from. If you combined the weapon/combat of Nioh with the movement, scale, and world of Sekiro, just think of the level of diverse gameplay it would allow!

Like a fighting game you need to learn mechanics and not autopilot before expecting progress. Soulsborne can be R1'd and run through to get you by most of it, but the first non-tutorial boss is usually harder than the average boss in everything except damage so you practice mechanics. Once you get them down it's easy, you just might have to spend an hour on a boss if you're not careful.

Brandonious15987 the thing is bloodborne took the best things from every game at that point and expanded on it, plus it’s much more creepy. It has the excellent bosses and world design of DS1, the good pvp of DS2, the excellent story telling and world building of demon souls. It’s combat is objectively the best of the games and it built the groundwork for DS3.

I also love that there's no stamina management, im getting pretty tired of that formula. i like how in Sekiro you can stand your ground instead of dodging everything and there's a rhythm to the combat, you can be clued in to when to go on the defensive from the sound of the blades clashing. while not as replayable as the other titles imo. the replay value comes from unlocking all the different moves and endings

@@Szanth "The game actively punished you for trying to use the skills and prosthetics"? What are you talking about? Shuriken can take out groups of weak enemies before they can even see you and the Chasing Slice skill make them great at closing distances; the Flame Vent can absolutely ruin enemies with high Posture recovery; the Axe is just plain good -- especially once you've upgraded it so it's burning: throw some Oil on the enemy and learn how to apply the Fang and Blade skill correctly (ergo, don't spam it) and it can actually replace the Flame Vent; the Firecracker and Umbrella are outright game breakers that can trivialize some of the hardest enemies in the game; the Spear's Rush attacks are some of the most cost effective ways of messing up an enemy's Vitality and Posture; Divine Abduction trivializes Senpou Temple and quite a few other enemies, and the Malcontent makes the Headless and O'Rin complete cakewalks. On the skill side of things; after the patch they got a bit more viable (mainly thanks to reduced Emblem costs). Mikiri Counter is pretty much a must-have; Vault Over can, in combination with Bloodsmoke and/or Puppeteer, become a game breaker; Whirlwind Slash can carry you during the early game; Shadowrush's leap deals as much Posture damage as a Sweep counter jump; Ichimonji is, of course, one of the best attacks in the game; Ashina Cross, though a bit situational, is a good way of closing distance; Praying Strikes - Exorcism is chargable and not too shabby; High Monk is like a Mikiri Counter against Sweep attacks and Mortal Draw can just plain wreck. Are you sure the problem isn't that you just plain need to git gudder?
@Szanth
@Szanth 4 жыл бұрын
@@GrahamChapman There are niche uses for them but generally speaking the game actively wants you to be parrying and attacking, and in my experience the unreliability of stuns and the extra amount of time taken to perform the moves (and whatever token cost they incur) don't make them more worthwhile than just doing a few normal strikes, with the exception of Ichimonji for posture recovery. Senpou temple is already a cakewalk, you can run past everything, you don't need a prosthetic to do that.

I think playing the charmless run really changed my perspective of the gameplay loop in Sekiro. Since you take significant chip damage when blocking, the parry system because a bigger risk since if you parry, you do more posture damage, but if you miss, you take shit ton of damage on top of posture, so you are given a decision between dodging and parrying, and that really diversified the game, and amde the gameplay infinitely more immersive. In ng+ runs, bosses that were a cake walk for me before became extremely difficult since blocking was pretty much the equivalent of getting hit.

There's been so many videos and posts online throughout the years that explain really well why DaS2 was so bad as a Soulsgame out there and almost non of them mentions the lore as one of the main reasons. So what are you on about? Furthermore, Max doesn't even defend it. He gives no reason aside from weapon variety and that the combat feels nice. Right after he goes on to say the levels suck, the graphic suck and the bosses suck. Which contradicts his "good level design is one of the things that make Soulsborne games good" So.. what? Him ranking DaS2 the same as Sekiro and Deamon Souls, despise saying 90% of the game sucks straight up makes 0 sense. Sure, as a stand alone game, it's not bad. But it's not a stand alone game, is part of a franchise and it's undoubtedly the worst in said franchise.

This is just another reason people will always bash Sekiro. And it's the same reason many DS players sucked absolute major ass when first playing Sekiro. Sekiro is not Dark Souls. It's not *supposed* to be constantly replayable. It's got a finished story that it tells and you can pursue some extra skills and other endings if you want, but ultimately it's not made to be a constantly replayed game over and over. People cling way too hard to "I need more weapons, I need more armor, I need to customize my character" and completely forget the point of the game is exactly that it's NOT supposed to be like that. You have a set character, with a set weapon and armor set, because the game is not about "your own journey"; it's about the Wolf and Kuro.

I tried to will myself through it, but I just couldn’t stand how obtuse the game felt when I first played it. When I decided to give it another chance, I came across a NPC that I had completely missed in my first play through. That little discovery opened my eyes to the game’s hidden treasures and I quickly acquired a greater appreciation for the experience. It may pale in comparison to some of the other Soulsborne titles, but Dark Souls II is still a fantastic game in its own right and several times better than most of the Soulsborne imitators out there.

And also Sekiro is the only game in this list that wasn't ruined by Bloodborne to me. DS3 to me got ruined by BB I just wanted to play BB so I just powered thru DS3 so I could return to BB lol.

enward lover bro cause Souls 2 map is all over the place. Walk through a misty forest gate and there’s a storm on the other side that turns off when you walk back out of the gate. Take a metal elevator up from a poison valley to an elevated molten castle. There’s rarely things as jarring in Dark Souls 1 save for things getting weird when you turn off Anor Londo’s sun which is optional. Something like the painted world would’ve just been some area you walked to in souls 2 rather than being a self contained area for not fitting the geometry like in Souls 1.

I just love Demon's souls. The atmosphere is just the best in the series, bar none. It gets my top spot, even without playing the remake. Then Bloodborne, DS1, DS3, and DS2 at the bottom. I've not played Sekiro yet, but I'd bet it'd fit behind DS1 for me when i do based on what I've heard. I've actually put more hours into DS2 than any other game in the series, though. Due to how absolutely fabulous the pvp is in that game. Made to last. So despite it being lowest on my list, just need to say, I still loved it.

I'm replying to your comment one year later, because I totally agree about Demon's souls. I'm currently playing it (emulated PS3 version) , after having played every other FS Soulsborne game, and I like it better than Elden Ring. As you said the atmosphere is incredible. I don't mind having a hub, every level is dense and has its own mood. I got really bored with ER because of the travels. DS1 still has to top spot in terms of world design because you combine demons souls tension with brillantly interconnected levels (well except Lost Izalith but everyone knows that). It's crazy how innovative Demon's Souls was. Combat is dry af, not many options there but the levels man, the atmoshpere, the constant tricks the game is putting against you, I haven't felt this obsessed with a game since DS1. Having to manage your equip AND item load seems like a chore, but it forces you to make choices which I like. And we kinda lost all that with ER in my opinion, which sometimes felt like a boss rush with boredom in between.

Let it just be said that demons souls has pioneered the most interesting boss fights out of all of the games I think. Leading strong with the old monk, what other game lets another player become the boss fight? The dragon god boss had you using harpoons to make him bend the knee, Tower of Latria's resurrecting boss and a tower knight. Garl Vinland and his devastating mega club protecting Astrea who is actually a good person instead of the twisted horrors that attack you first.

I assume because in Sekiro the main way you deal with enemies is just...well. Attacking and Parrying. Occasionally you sneak attack and sometimes you use prostethics. I think Dark Souls 3 has the same problem as Sekiro, with simply smashing r1 being usually the best tactic

@Burst Your Bubble Yea which is why Nioh is considered to have the best combat system out of all soulslike games, it's the closest to a 3D fighting game. It has cancels, combos, perfect guards, parries, counters, and full control of your stamina bar. Soulsbourne games are all literally don't get hit, hit it till it dies, with the most generous I-frames for dodging.

Very good list I agree with almost everything you said. The only thing I'm kinda conflicted is Sekiro because even though it's repetitive it has the best learning curve of all the other games in the list which in my opinion would grant a place in the "Amazing" tier. I also found very exciting the idea of playing without Kuro's charm in NG+ to activate cheap damage and force you to deflect with perfect timing. Overall very good video.

I’ve not played all of them yet so for the ones I have played, I think SEKIRO is a masterpiece in combat and controls with some of the best boss fights in games. BLOODBORNE is the most atmospheric one them with good combat and also some great boss fights. Dark Souls 1 is a masterpiece in level design to the likes I’ve never seen before, but those boss fights are much too fast and too easy. I got to play the other games in the series eventually.

I'm not a pro or something like that now, but I started drawing 8 years ago. I progressed and get better, just drawing... Draw things you like, take your time, don't rush and try to be the "best". Study a bit, draw a lot!, observe your previous drawings and try to recognize the mistakes your did, don't get frustrated, just try to learn while your drawing!. Brain and hand connected!. For study I recommend you this book, Figure drawing design and invention by Michael Hampton and proko youtube videos for anatomy drawing, even if you want to draw anime, caricature, etc, knowing anatomy helps to drawn things that looks right for you and everyone. And this book, Perspective made easy by Ernest R. Norling, perspective helps a lot with no organic things like robots, environments, and everything!, and study your favourite artists too!

How can Max say Sekiro's gameplay is repetitive when other damn souls games is basically dodge/block and stab all the time. Sekiro and Bloodbourne are without a doubt the very best. I don't agree with him putting Sekiro in Great.
@justinsmith5582
@justinsmith5582 3 жыл бұрын
Because the other souls games have a large variety of magic and weapons to change it up. And wildly different stat builds. Your great shield blocker is going to play wnothing like my mage or someone else's fast rolling estoc fighter. In Sekiro you don't have that. You have essentially the one build and skills that you basically HAVE to take like Mikiri Counter with a few small choices. I would put Sekiro in "okay" tier. It tried a lot of new things, which is always good to see. But they almost all just really sucked.
@ivanl.8054
@ivanl.8054 3 жыл бұрын
@@justinsmith5582 it's really the same thing though. It's all the exact same shit with a different coat of paint. It's dodge and attack. Doesn't matter if you have a great sword, straight sword, are blasting fire, or summoning soul lasers. It's all the same thing no matter what weapon or armor you're using. You have to adjust VERY slightly because of range and speed but that's the only diversity. Thats not to say the combat is bad. I think it's very fun and a perfect system for that game. It's really impeccable honestly. But the same applies to Sekiro. To just say it's boring or repetitive because it's parry and attack with the same sword is very childish. Of course it'll sound uninteresting or repetitive when you say it like that. But you can do that for all the games. That's really not a good argument to say Dark Souls is deeper because it has more weapons when they all do the same thing. Deal damage. At least Sekiros prosthetics have effects and abilities that ACTUALLY change the game. Shurikens to instantly close gaps. Firecrackers to stun. Umbrella for difficult deflects and reversing projectiles. Fan to turn enemies around. Whistle for picking off during stealth. They do different things besides "Do damage but my sword is massive." "Do damage but it's fire." "Do damage but it's a crystal orb." Sekiro has just as much variety if not more than Dark Souls so come off it man.
@justinsmith5582
@justinsmith5582 3 жыл бұрын
@@ivanl.8054 "Shurikens to instantly close gaps. Firecrackers to stun." You can do those things in DS2. You also have lots of different status ailments that change how you approach enemies. You also can do even more across the range of spells available in the multiple different types of casting. It is amazing seeing all the big Soulsborne streamers like Lobosjr drop Sekiro after a couple months because it was out of ways to play almost immediately, while they still run Dark Souls in unique challenge runs to this day. Lets see the "firecracker only" run come out of Sekiro.
@ivanl.8054
@ivanl.8054 3 жыл бұрын
@@justinsmith5582 yea because they actually designed the way to be challenging. You can't cheese sorcery to the end that's why you can't just use firecrackers. And it doesn't matter if they ran out of ways to make content. The game isn't an RPG and a lot of people forget that. You aren't meant to replay it again and again and again. But if you chose to you could because the gameplay is fun. Like Dark Souls. But even Dark Souls is the same thing again and again. Whatever no hit or special weapon run they do its literally just avoid attacks and attack but with different coats of paint. I don't care if you're sl1, can't get hit, or throwing only firebombs. It's the same meal but with different sides. And you might say "Sekiro hardly gives the option to change those sides." Well that's fine because again it isn't a damn RPG and also the meal is perfect as is. No need to do it again and again trying to change it up when the way it was the first time was already perfect
@justinsmith5582
@justinsmith5582 3 жыл бұрын
"The game isn't an RPG and a lot of people forget that. You aren't meant to replay it again and again and again." Then why does it have multiple new game plus tiers and multiple endings? "It's the same meal but with different sides." How wildly different those sides are has always been one of the primary draws for the franchise. Maybe you don't feel they are that different, or don't care for it, but it's still one of the main selling points for a lot of fans including Max apparently. Sekiro doesn't have that variety in sides, so those fans who enjoy that part of the meal will not be as happy with it Trying to deny that the sides exist though is nonsense.
