Great video Matt! I'd say two things: 1) It's hard as a hitter because you have to focus SO intensely in a microsecond of time, it's impossible to focus your brain/eyes like that for long periods of time. Plus no one likes squatting haha, burns them thighs if you have a deep stance. 2) I think this is a result of Scherzer being a veteran with tons of confidence, he's so good at his craft he can play with it as he wants. Plus its spring training and he's feeling out what he can do, like a veteran pitcher should. Most guys will still need their own rhythm, some with expose it like Scherzer and the other fun funky pitchers. Excited to see it play out. I personally think it should be 5 seconds, NOT 8 seconds. I think that's fair for both guys. Also, Stanton is a good example of someone who just STAYS in the box and uses his confidence to play the dominant role. More guys will start doing that I think.

If they just concentrate on when the pitcher is going to throw the ball I don't think it will be a problem. You only have to get ready and in your position to swing once they start the motion. Too many hitters are in their own pattern and are used to calling time out or stepping out when forced out of their pattern. Then again batting averages have plummeted, strikeouts have gone up and for some reason we can't expect professional hitters to hit the ball the other way against the shift. Even though it happened in the past.
@georgeeaves6151

@@Efilnikufesin76 the problem is tho as humans it’s incredibly difficult to focus at the level you need to to play high level ball sports (not just baseball, I am a decently high level field hockey goalkeeper so ik how hard it is) for any period of time longer than about five seconds, it’s not as simple as just focus on when the ball is released because humans really struggle to do that. Here's my question... Scherzer never takes his eyes off the batter to make sure his timing is perfect to when he gets in the box. Why, in all that time, is Robles not trying to create a distraction at second base in order to get Scherzer to move his concentration onto him? This would give the batter an opportunity to get set. Another thing is if you have a runner on 1at base and you kill time in the stretch and are forced to pitch you will see enormous jumps by the runner at 1st base that will make it impossible for the catcher to throw the runner out. You will also see runners steal 3rd base much more often. The longer the pitcher holds the ball the more vulnerable the pitcher is of having a base stolen. It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out
@Sports314

I’ve been wondering about this to, so I just looked it up now From USAtoday. Pitchers get two pickoff attempts In addition, pitchers are limited to a maximum of two pickoff attempts per plate appearance. If a pitcher attempts a third pickoff throw and doesn't get the runner out, it's an automatic balk and all runners move up one base. So they can still attempt a third pickoff, but it has to be successful

Absolutely love the breakdown by Coach A! By my analysis I think it's gonna be a pitchers year in MLB BUT baseball hitters will eventually adapt and evolve to even stronger and quicker skills, reflexes, and instincts -once the mind/muscle/nervous systems force the human to change. Overall the skill level on both ends will certainly rise. This indeed, is a very exciting point in time for baseball and we're fortunate to have witnessed it. People like Coach A are masters at drawing the picture and coloring the experience for people who have never played ball at that level. Be grateful for this

I think this is Scherzer's (very smart) way of fighting back against the rule, because technically, as a pitcher, you were always allowed to do this. The only difference now is that hitters only have one timeout by rule. However, in the past, there was always this peer pressure/unwritten rule that hitters couldn't call timeouts too many times. If they did, they'd get chirped by the other team, or the umpire just wouldn't grant timeout at all. So, really, nothing much has changed. What Scherzer is doing has always been legal, but the pitch clock has changed how pitchers/batters approach at bats mentally. I think Scherzer actually internally hates the rule, so he's going out of his way to make watching/participating in at bats as uncomfortable as he possibly can, while pretending like he loves the rule for the "massive advantage" it gives pitchers. Like the video creator, I played baseball for 20 years (I was a two way player through college, so I'm familiar with both sides of this issue), and there is this timing that you get used to. I was getting anxiety just watching this at bat. However, honestly, I don't hate the pitch clock rule. I think it will be worth some short term pain in the long run, and I think hitters, pitchers, and fans will adjust to it, and it will be a win in the long run.
@vincentrobinette1507
@vincentrobinette1507 Жыл бұрын
The simple fix would be to NOT reset the pitch clock after the time-out. That would force the pitcher to either leave enough time in reserve to pitch, or, pitch immediately when the clock resumes. Otherwise, the pitch clock can take more time than it saves, even though the batter only gets one time-out. I've rarely seen anywhere near the ~35 seconds between pitches, that the pitch clock plus a reset would allow.

@Antonelli Baseball - I think there's more to this than is seen in the video: 1) Hitters are now being removed of the ability to assess the pitcher body language I.e. pitchers that tip pitches, pitchers have body language "tells" when runners are on etc When people (i.e. pitchers) are given sufficient time, they tend to revert back to their tendencies/habits. Now that their time is limited, they simply perform the shortened version of the procedure which reduces the chance for habits etc to return 2) This also F@#$'s with the runners even though the pitcher can only throw over a limited amount of times, the pitcher is no longer getting into a rhythm there either, so the runners now have no tendencies or body language to draw from 3) The clock is now both an external thing, and internal thing for hitters, so its additional activity on their brain (watching the timer, counting etc) so they no longer have that Acute focus on the task at hand.

That's why I swing my bat a little while standing. I could stand there one minute and it not bother my timing. I'm never that static. I also move back and forth a little between my front and back foot shifting my weight. By the time they start to pitch I shift my weight back on my back foot and stop the small wing back and forth over my head with the bat. It looks like on this video that the batter can run out that clock by having one foot out, so they could wait until around 6 seconds to step in and then the pitcher can't really surprise you much. You'll be controlling the timing more, and not the other way around where the pitcher is in control of the timing.

My strategy would be to get in the box early, dug in, at ease rest with bat on shoulder watching the pitch clock, gathering good swing thoughts, then come into batting stance and look at pitcher with 8-9 seconds on the clock. There have been pitch delivery timing rules since 1900. Just watch a game from 1970 and you will notice a marked difference in how long there was between pitches. Just stand in the box with a relaxed stance. Pitchers held the ball before and there were plenty of games where batters called multiple timeouts, then the pitcher stepped off the rubber, etc. The game slowed to a crawl and it added nothing to the enjoyment of it.

I think that one of the physical abilities that baseball players in general have command of, is "quick twitch" muscle control. The base path is a short distance made for sprinters (think through the steal motion), not distance runners; the swing is a quick, decisive motion, not a discus style movement; the pitch is a "whipping" action of the arm, versus a trebuchet style movement; etc. These guys like to react quickly, many like to "twitch", and now Scherzer has caused his opponents to "lock" themselves in place. What a smart move on his part.

The pitch clock is the one rule change that scares me the most. I'm afraid MLB is going to ruin baseball the same way the NBA ruined basketball. For the casual fan this probably isn't a big deal, but if you have spent any time studying the intricacy of the game, this is a huge concern for the future of the game. By the way, I wish you or someone with your knowledge would have been my coach back in the 80's. Great job, you are doing fantastic work.

I'd not put the fault on the pitch clock, but rather advanced analytics which have ruined the watchability of major sports. @georgeson1161 That's wrong. If you removed all commercials you would see that the game's pace had slowed to a screeching halt between the 80s and 2022. The stated reason that I understood was to have the game go faster. By allowing the pitcher to hold for 10 or whatever seconds after the batter is ready, isn't speeding things up. A few remedies that may work, 1. if the pitcher doesn't pitch within y number of seconds of the batter coming set, the batter can call time, no limit (or compulsory penalty like the batter failing to be ready to bat in time, make it an automatic ball). 2. the pitcher must wait at least x number of seconds after the batter comes set before they can pitch (or it's a balk).

I wonder if the rule could allow for hitters to have their hand up(sort of asking for time but not resetting the clock) and get their feet and eyes set prior to the clock getting to 8 seconds. Then when the hand comes down/grabs the bat, the pitcher still has 8 seconds. I get the pitcher and catcher need to be able to communicate what pitch to throw, so their may need to be some details within this.

The solution's simple...Don't reset the pitch clock. When the batter steps back up, the clock resumes where it left off. That puts some burden on the pitcher, to leave time, to make the pitch after the batter returns from the time-out. That way, the pitcher doesn't get a fresh clock, to hold the batter up. If this happens too much, I'm willing to bet, that the rules will be revised.
