It's early-morning work-out time but Peter Windsor is mainly energised by Max Verstappen's chances if/when the 2020 F1 season finally begins. If there's one driver out there who could blindside the rest of them it'll be Max, he believes - and he explains his reasons as he climbs the fire escape steps of a former 60s London office block. There are also some thoughts on Valtteri Bottas, Carlos Sainz, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc; and a taste of what's coming up over the next few days on on this channel.

WOW .... Kind of finally understand now a bit Peter ..... I remember watching an interview you did , where you said , Formula 1 to you was about the car and driver in perfect harmony at the limit , now makes sense .... the issue is normal folks like us who watch on TV and I go to US GP every year in Texas from Cali, can't spot these things, thanks for the great insight

Awesome video - I’ve only been following F-1 since 2016 and you’re changing the way I view the sport and drivers for the good ! So appreciate your insights- you’re a man to be listened too- it’s so true about God given gifts - we can all improve but some have special gifts and you’re one of them - thank you so much for sharing - even your work out - cheers and take care 😎

If anyone is going to take it away from Lewis it's Max. Until the new regs kick in, this season is the only chance Max has to take the championship. Charles is good but I don't think he has the car this year to really be a threat.
@matthewd6306
@matthewd6306 4 жыл бұрын
Max also has a chance next year because the new regs were pushed back to 2022 and Lewis Hamilton is not getting any younger. Age will start to take a toll on Hamilton in the near future and he's not going to get any better, he already hit his peak. Meanwhile Max hasn't hit his peak yet. He has improved every year in F1 so far. Last year Max drove nearly flawless and caused less crashes than Hamilton.

Thanks. For some reason quite a lot of fans don't seem to rate Charles as highly as I/you. To me, he's very similar to Jackie Stewart in the way he drives (technically-speaking). Maybe that makes him a tad slower than Max or Lewis but he makes up for it in a couple of other good areas.

It's long been said that there are some drivers who, if you watch them in the cockpit, don't look like they're doing much, but when it comes down to it are a lot faster than at first appears. Prost is a prime example of that. Senna was always closer to the edge, but they were able to drive at the same pace. I'm not saying one style is better than the other, just that there are a lot of "smooth" drivers who end up underrated regarding their ability when compared to the more visually exciting ones. It's not all the champions who were fully smooth or totally exciting, but all the greats were (are) the most naturally gifted IMHO, sometimes to their detriment. I've seen some who had so much natural potential but they didn't take it seriously enough. It's those who do who are amazing! Looking forward to the Surtees film. Been a big fan of his for a very long time. Talk about underrated (by those who don't know much history), Surtees was/is barely ever mentioned. I often wonder how he felt after the magnesium car disaster (whoever thought of that was an idiot!), because he'd taken one look at it and refused to drive it because it was too dangerous. And this was a 2 time motorcycle GP world champion during the days of hay bales and far more frequent deaths than in the mobile coffins being raced on 4 wheels, so anyone maligning his bravery hasn't got a clue what they're talking about. He should have been so much better recognised 😞
@Bahamuttiamat
@Bahamuttiamat 4 жыл бұрын
@Mandy B You're absolutely correct. Senna played closer to the limit which gave him an edge in quali but doing so hurt his race pace. He was rarely, if ever faster than Prost during the race - unless it rained. Nick Hedfield said in a recent podcast, he was at the swimming pool chichane in monaco 07, comparing lewis vs fernando. He said both were extraordinary in their precision and proximity to the wall. Hamilton more so than Alonso, but was more inconsistent. Being at the ragged edge gives high peak performance but more oscillation in pace. By dialling it back a notch or two, it unlocks greater average speed. This ability seems to develop with age, as with most things in life.

Peter, I really enjoy hearing your drivers' insights. Few journalists have what it takes for something like this. I miss Rob Wilson material form a few years back, when he claimed Kimi would defeat Fernando. Maybe you can hook up with Rob for a material regarding Seb, he is quite an enigma to many. Why didn't he deliver in the V6 era? I remember Mark Webber saying that Seb's strength were slow corners. Maybe these heavier cars made it more difficult for him? Keep up the good work(outs)!

I agree with Max having a really good chance at a championship. Depending on which tracks are in play and a bit of good luck he has a great chance. He will have to limit his mistakes as we won’t have a long season to make up points. It’s going to be a sprint season. I like Max’s chances. Valtterie has a shot, I think Seb is going to be very aggressive too. Lewis will be Lewis as long as the Merc is reliable.

Lewis said that "drivers will be rusty after this long break". But isn't that mainly referring to himself? I don't think Max and Charles will be rusty... They drive all the time in simulator races, which Lewis does not want to participate in. Also by the time racing starts again they probably do simulator sessions on the team's simulator. Lewis does not do that either. So, there will likely be a difference between Lewis and other top drivers, w.r.t. "being rusty".
@peterwindsor

Hmm. Not sure that sims get rid of the rust. They're very hand/eye. FEELING the dynamic weight is something very different - and I'm sure that it's this to which Lewis is referring.

All that depends on whether Hamilton is switched on or not surely. If Hamilton brings his A game and in a reliable Mercedes (remember testing they had some question about that) - everyone else is toast. All he has to do is beat Bottas, which he will do if he is ‘on’. I think it’s boring but it’s true. Hamilton has 1% on any other driver and the Merc has 1% on all the other cars and that’s enough to keep that a winning combination.

This year isn’t about Max’s driving ability. It’s about the car. We simply don’t know where the cars are, right now. We do know that the Australian engines have been sidelined, because they have been superseded by updates. Would I bet against Hamilton, and Mercedes, given that the car is a minor iteration from the 2019 car? No, I wouldn’t. Also, you need to view recent interviews, with Hamilton. He has lost weight. He has Angela with him in Los Angeles. He hasn’t been distracted, and is hungrier than ever to return to driving. Your assumptions are based upon an outdated view of Hamilton’s life, outside of Formula Once. The weight of evidence is that ALL leading drivers are fit and motivated. My money is on Mercedes. Their engineering team is, by a very wide margin, the best in Formula One. Total unity of purpose, and superb leadership.

I know this is an old video and many comments have already been registered here but I was not into F1 this season until now due to the COVID-19 and so must write. This is the first time I have to completely disagree with Peter and question whether he is in control of his mental faculties? Hw could he say blanketly that somehow Hamilton has not got the drive to start the shortened season in dominant form? Max is a talented driver but in my opinion massively overrated. Maybe Peter is in too deep with RedBull or something but I will be back here to witness his apology if he really is a gentleman because it is an insult to continually question the drive motivation and fitness level of Hamilton- I have not seen any other past or present F1 driver been put under such public scrutiny. The tracks which were selected for the shortened season are typically Hamilton tracks and Windsor should know that.

Not sure to whom you're referring but I've been a massive fan of Lewis's driving since 2006. I had a bit of an argument with the ITV commentators that year, when they were pushing for Gary Paffett instead of Lewis as Montoya's replacement, and I took a lot of flak from the Rosberg guys in later years, when Lewis was at Merc. So, to make it clear: I think Lewis is the Gold Standard in F1 and have done for a long time.

seeing as he has not done much in 5 seasons so is he really any good? I think he is the most overrated driver in fq through the 2019 season!

You can't work out and do a video dude. Besides that, the workout is a bit overdone, isn't it? Also, there are only 2 drivers right up there right now. Hamilton and Verstappen. That's all and in that order. The rest is catching up.

Sorry. I disagree with you there on three counts. I did the video. It's my normal, daily workout. And I think Charles is up there with them. Sorry. Again.

For goodness sake. Take you excercise in private, before you have a heart attack, or give me one watching.

I was only working out at 60 per cent of my cardio limit. Isn't that what you're supposed to do?
