Amazing job !! THANKS ! I built the Bismark model back in he 70's, a lot less care to detail as you have done. A so called friend saw it and decided to do a book report on the Bismark for a class project. He did his report,THEN came to me wanting to use the model for his class project. I was hesitent but allowed him to take it. A week later, there was a bag addressed to me at my parents side porch. Opening the bag, my Bismark model was in many broken parts. That was my last model ever. Now, I am old guy but your video has encouraged me to give it another go. Fast forward to now days and we have better glues, paints, air guns "cheap," but most of all, we have EXCELLENT youtube tutorials for great ideas and posibilities !! Thanks again !!

Using the blue tack on the head of a toothpick to apply small PE parts is a great tip that I haven't seen before - I usually work with 1/35 scale armor and 1/32 scale aircraft, so ship model KZbin is a new thing for me. Good stuff!

I'm looking at this kit right now. It's a nice touch that Tamiya has included the option to depict her after the stripes and false bow and stern were painted over. Nearly every other kit only has her with the stripes. Which look great, but are a pain to do on the superstructure.

I have this kit, and an Eduard PE set, and Aber L11 barrel set. And I feel totally overwhelmed. I have not put a kit together since my early 20's and I am 62 years old. But seeing all the photos of this kit makes me want to give it a shot. But I am basically starting over again. Plus in my day there was no PE. This is what scares me the most. Looks very complicated and difficult to work with. But I also am in no hurry. I plan to weather covid and this winter working on it. I don't know anything about washes and 'marbling' but I'll learn. I have a Badger airbrush, but I need a compressor. I need a lot of stuff, but I can get started doing the basic stuff until I get everything. Thanks for an informative video. Keep them coming!

Hi George, modeling techniques, accessories and tools sure have advanced since the hobby began and certainly has exploded in the last couple of decades. PE can be a challenge, but after getting your feet wet - it gets a little easier, so stick with it. I consider it essential for ship models myself. If you have the patience, you can easily pick up on the detailing techniques and amaze yourself with each new build. Good Luck and have great fun! 😄

@Alan hughes It is not that hard really, just get a nice kit and take your time... For scratch building the idea is simple, get some good plans and remember ships are just lots of geometric shapes so build it bit by bit with that in mind.

I was on it briefly in 78'.Boarded her from the fantail from my boat, the Tautog. Little did I know at the time I was right under the massive fire & bomb damage she went through back in 69' Almost the same situation that occurred on the Forrestal in 67'. I was on a sub & we were port of call at Kenya Africa. Mombasa to be exact. Good times. Wonderful memory. The Bismarck story is one of the most intriguing from WW2. There was a quick shot of the directions at 11:37, were the blue images the photo etch parts? I have a Lion Roar photo etch kit and a Revell 350 Bismarck. Soooo many pieces of PE without a guide. I downloaded the Tamiya instructions but they did not show any placement of PE. I realize their kit has nothing to do with Lion Roar. Great build, any help is appreciated. Thanks.
@MaxAfterburner
@MaxAfterburner 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, the Tamiya Bismarck kit I used did not include photo etch. The blue you see in the instructions are highlights of attachment points between parts -- essentially where the glue would be applied to put those pieces together. I couldn't find any instructions for the Lion Roar set either. You might try a forum on sites such as www.modelwarships.com/ and see if anyone has a set of the instructions they might scan and upload to you. 🙂

Inspiring stuff! I believe the current theory on Bismarck's crippling torpedo hit was that it caused a stern collapse, similar to that encountered on Prinz Eugen, Lutzow and Scharnhorst. A weak spot on German ships it seems.
@richardsimmons6470
@richardsimmons6470 2 жыл бұрын
it was a torpedo stike on the rudder that caused her to slow down - at one stage heading towards the British fleet I would like to point out that she destroyed the Hood with one salvo - took the British the entire Home and |Mediterranean fleet to destroy her. Without that lucky hit from an incredibly brave torpedo strike by aircraft she would have got to Breast. Prince Eugean got there and was destroyed after the war Incidentally during the first world war the British lost three capital ships and the Admiral sdaid what is wrong with our bloddy ships

@@richardsimmons6470 "Something wrong with our bloody ships today Chatfield, turn two points toward the enemy". Admiral Beatty. The lucky torpedo strike was the theory before so many Kriegsmarine ships were found with their sterns hanging off. That's why I favour the stern weakness hypothesis. Once is bad luck, twice, a bad coincidence. Three times and more? Thats a bad habit.

Hello, couple questions. First, what is the best way to marble the superstructure with your airbrush? Do you move it side to side or in small circles? I can’t seem to find a good guide and your Bismarck turned out beautifully. Also if I want to convert a battleship to rc, what is the best way to protect the paint? Any response would be very appreciated thank you.
@MaxAfterburner
@MaxAfterburner 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Midnight Breakfast, use small circles to create the marbling here. For paint on an RC, you probably should consider something that is waterproof to begin with such as an enamel based paint.

I am just staring this kit so glad to find this ‘build’. I have the wooden planking which should enhance things but need to investigate what weathering is appropriate for that. What glue did you use to attach all the handrails? I read a comment that the black and white diagonal colour scheme is, in most cases, incorrect. I will do some research on that subject. Thanks again!
@davidbishop1570
@davidbishop1570 5 ай бұрын
Tom, I have a question on colours. The two grays you picked are different than the ones shown in the instructions. Why is that?
@MaxAfterburner
@MaxAfterburner 5 ай бұрын
Hi davidbishop1570, I think without exception every model builder attaching photo etch uses cyanoacrylate glue (CA glue) or simply known as "super glue". It works best for these parts as common plastic cement does not work well with the brass parts. The paint scheme is subject to debate as the Bismarck went through changes, sometimes rapidly, as events unfolded. I think every builder should go with what they like or accept as the most accurate for a particular time period. 🙂
@MaxAfterburner

Hi, it's been just over 5 years since I built my Bismarck, but if I didn't use the exact color listed on the paint guide is that I probably was trying to achieve something different in tonal quality or general appearance rather than painting "by the numbers". 🎨🖌️

Edit: Also my brother in christ that looks insane
