Hell even in the Ranger community the OBS Ranger drivers complain that it’s too big. It’s a couple inches here and there. It still fits into the same tight spaces as it always has. It’s just a far more versatile pickup than what it used to be. Ford built a midsized pickup that can do the same work that halftons did 20+ years ago for a lower price, exactly what the market has asked for, and you have people bellyaching because Ford gave them what they want. I want to see someone hand their late 90’s early 2000’s half ton over for a Super Ike and see how it compares to the Ranger. It isn’t that hard to find my boss drove a 2013 Silverado with lower max towing than my Ranger.

I love watching videos of turbocharged trucks tackling the Ike. This one was great, too. The little 2.3 was humming along at 3800 rpm, under boost, and had plenty of power in reserve at 60 mph. It could do that continuously and not hurt itself. Watching them flog naturally aspirated trucks up the Ike with the loud pedal floored and the engine screaming over 5000 rpm makes me cringe.

Ever since Ford release the Ecoboost motor they have been a really good competitor when it comes with towing. Usually they have the highest towing capacity per vehicle group. Like crossover SUVs, full size SUVs, and compact SUVs. And even their sedans can tow a little my Fusion with the 1.5 Ecoboost is good for 1,000 pounds so basically small utility trailer to move a couch that don't fit. But Ford has gone crazy with towing with Ecoboost engines and the 10 speed. And it's not that big of a deal that my Fusion can tow a tiny bit of weight and if I had the 2.0 turbo it does better at 2,000 pounds. But everyone else is trying to do cvts and they can't tow for crap like the Corolla used to be able to tow 1500 pounds all day long but then they threw in the cvts and Toyota immediately said do not tow with the cvt. Beforehand they said it was cool towing 1500 with the 4 speeds or 5 speeds. I think it's cool Ford made it so you could tow with just about any of their vehicle options.

Comparison to the Ike Gauntlet with the 2023 Chevy Colorado (which was towing a 6800 lb travel trailer): (Ranger / Colorado) - Brake applications - 9 / 11 - 35-60 MPH - 16 sec / 21 sec - Squat - 1.0 in / 2.5 in - Sound - 64 dB / 60 dB - Time - 8 mins for both - Uphill RPM - 3200-3800 / 3800-4700 - Uphill MPG - 4.3 / 3.6 - Overall MPG - 10.7 / 9.6 Honestly quite impressed with the old ranger. Performed better than the new Colorado in every category except for sound. Also seemed to have a more robust cooling system. This generation of Ranger tows extremely well for a midsize truck!

The pass is not the gnarliest in CO but it is long and at 11200+ feet above sea level. It takes a lot out of engines. I live in that valley for 5 years driving the past almost everyday in every weather. It will exciting at times. I had a 99 Ranger 3.0l and it worked fine, but man it was a chore getting over the pass in a 140hp truck NA. I got the 2022 Tremor now. It is impressive with that load to keep the speed in check. I would only be comfortable in clear weather at Max weight. The truck is only 4000Lb. That motor can ability to handle that drag up is impressive. The intercoolers are not right for that load IMO. If that was summer I think he'd be struggling to keep cool at those climbs.

The nice thing about the ranger is the payload is just under 1500 lbs. You can safely add the tongue weight to the truck and not have leave your family and stuff at home. I owned a 19 ranger and towed big with it, loved the truck to death, but the fuel tank was a major reason I ended up selling it. Also as good as the truck pulls I just didn't feel comfortable running it at high RPMs for that long. Ended up selling it and getting a 2013 F250 6.2L, just better suits my use case, bigger displacement means much lower RPMs, simpler engine I can work on, and a much larger fuel tank. The no factory break controller is real big bummer, IMHO any vehicle rated at over 5,000lb towing should come with the option for one with a factory, since it's required by law in basically ever state. Seems pretty silly we mandate backup cameras from the factory but not break controllers : P

I say it like every video. The Ranger is overbuilt. It was designed for Australia. It’s their main truck over there besides maybe the hilux. They torture tested them suckers. They’re weighted to tow more than what we have them set for here. They’re overall outstanding trucks. When I check the used market you rarely find them for sale. You find Nissans Toyotas and chevys all for sale in this segment. But not many Rangers. My assumption is people like them too much to sell. Toyotas are way too high and the other two I’d just avoid all together. The Ranger is an awesome and seems super reliable option. Hopefully this new gen will be the same way.

I think Ford under estimated and under rated the Ranger like Chevy did with it’s 2019 4 cylinder turbo Silverado. They first rated it for 6,700lbs, then had to re-certify it at 9,300. That Ranger only got up to 3,800rpms!

Surprised by the temp gauge being almost at "C" in the beginning. Is it an actual gauge and not a "dummy" switch? Most modern day ones quickly get to dead center shortly after starting the vehicle and stay there unless something catastrophic happens.

I cant speak to this specifically, but I do remember once in my old Ford Focus the needle dropping down. It was 15 degrees outside and I was coasting down a highway stretch. The needle never got to full cold, but I didnt have a sustained decent like here. Could just be a very narrow temperature range that the gauge displays, making small variations more obvious (which can be useful if starting to get too hot).
@lidolf8168
@lidolf8168 Жыл бұрын
The one in my Fusion seems to be a real gauge. It stays down in the cold until the car heats up all the way. Once it hits the operating temp or slightly below if the oil is warmed up enough it'll turn off the motor at intersections and then turn it back on once you let off the brake or it cools down too much. But if you sit long enough without it cooling down the temp gauge does go down and then go back up when the engine turns on and warms back up.
@davidthompson7817

@@ALMX5DP As long as you watch that gauge frequently. My brother’s first car was a Mustang it wasn’t anything special… it had a six-cylinder in it but he let the engine overheat and ruined it. Pretty sure it had a temperature gauge in the dash too. I learned that lesson early on,luckily it wasn’t my fault. @@champinsoccer9 you don't floor it while it's cold right? That's really bad for your engine it can cause the block to morph, when the turbo isn't at operating temp it can hurt the impeller or cause morphing, and same with the transmission too.

Andre: since you are going to do this each week, which is awesome, consider adding in measurements and weights for Trailer Hitch weight and Pin weight for 5th wheel trucks. Most don’t know that they are over loaded or at the limits for the vehicle Gross Vehicle Weight or the GVCW not so much the towing capacity. While I agree that towing is going to be the most important to me and most others too but there are other factors to proficient at, I know you guys talk about that when discussing trucks with a bunch of options that take away from the towing capacity. Since you are the de facto, certified, expert these are educational things to expand on. BTW, you are my favorite truck performance show/personality by FAR! The Frontier may have more power at sea level, but N/A engines lose about 3% per 1000ft so at Ike altitude it's down to around 200hp while the Ranger's still got most of its 270. I went with the Ranger for exactly that reason, I'll be living at 5000' soon and regularly driving over 8000' so the turbo makes a lot of sense. It's also just a more "serious" truck than the others in its class, they're all designed as light-duty vehicles for the US market while the Ranger is a global truck that's Ford's main work truck in most of the rest of the world, so naturally it's gonna tow better than other NA midsizes because it's the rest of the world's F-150 and has to be able to handle that stuff. As an owner, though, I really think the tow features rating was way too generous. The lack of a stock TBC should be worth at least a full star off and the mirrors aren't great either - they're not awful and if you have an XLT or Lariat you can program the trailer length into the blind spot warning, which helps, but you have to take points off somewhere to make this a reasonable rating system.

This was really an OVERLOADED TEST. At +11,000 ft Ford only rates the Ranger to have a GCWR of about 8,375lb, 12,500lb GCWR limit is sea-level, and you lose 3% for every 1,000ft over. So, if that trailer was 7,500lb, add a couple passengers that likely come close to 500lb combined, and there only 375lb for the truck to fit in, with that being the FX4 it's about the heaviest option you could pick with the max trailer support. Still nice to see the truck did ok, but the really cold temps could have helped with that, so pulling that much at that altitude with Ranger is not something that should be suggested as normal use and should something go wrong while doing it, could cause warranty issues if pulling over the rated amount is believed to be the cause of the warranty concern.

This goes to show and proves you do NOT need a large engine to efficiently tow. Rather, you can do it in a economical and sensible sized truck, this truck has plenty of power for just about everyone. Why waste fuel on gas guzzling large truck engines when something far more practical can do the job! Trucks the size of a Ranger can tow great and it has plenty of room for a family of 5.
