I towed a 5,000lb camping trailer from AZ to PA and back with my 2022 Nissan Frontier and it did a GREAT job. Much better towing than my 2003 Tundra. The Frontier was powerful, quiet, and stable. I'm a boomer who has fond memories of the older pickup trucks we all loved in their day, but... it's easy to forget that the relative dimensions (LxWxH and weight) of modern midsized pickups are roughly the same as full sized trucks of the 70s/80s/90s with more horsepower and torque, better brakes and MUCH better safety/convenience tech. We're lucky to still have these tools for our work/play needs.

I love these Ike Gauntlet videos. It was enjoyable to see them all compared in one video. The normally aspirated engines suffer at high elevations compared to the turbo engines. I suspect long-term, they will be more reliable since they're not relying on an expensive turbo to make all that torque for pulling. I don't really tow, but I need a 6ft bed. That wipes out this entire lineup except for Tacoma and Frontier. I currently drive an old Colorado and it's been a great little workhorse. Always a fun shoot with Mr.Truck, and heck of a job grabbing all this info guys. There was one wrinkle I caught with the 35-60 test. The Ranger was a second quicker than the Colorado there, so it should have gotten the 5 points alone, the Colorado 4 points, The Tacoma 3, the Frontier 2, the Gladiator 1. Also, The Colorado uphill time was 7:54, the Ranger 7:50. There was the hiccup on the Ranger run with the tunnel being closed, but you had to slow down before you stopped the clock, and the signal light you use as the end marker was only a few car lengths ahead. You listed them as tied on this one again, as I know your metric is the 8:00 mark. That being said, the actual time should be the tie breaker, as the "8 miles" isn't exactly 8 miles anyway. I have no dog in this fight, but those things did jump out at me. While you guys have all of these trucks, you should do a Dyno test to see what they all are producing at the wheels. With the Ranger being mid pack on power and torque, yet somehow beating the rest in acceleration unladen and towing, someone's lying somewhere. Again, awesome work gentlemen.

As a potential mid size truck buyer, I am not sure what to make of this testing. You have Colorado slightly ahead of Ranger. This tells me GMC Canyon will be even better. I am a Ford guy and I want a Ranger but the styling sucks compared to the competition. Ranger Raptor seems to be the only way out for me.

Great video! Really appreciate the time and effort put into this and I love the scoring sheet. That said, my biggest gripe is the "value". Value does NOT equal price and never has in anything. Value is based on many factors, price being one but not the top factor. In fact, most of the time the lowest price item is the least best value.

The Jeep Gladiator Mojave is the wrong Jeep to do an Ike gauntlet tow test with. Because it’s set up with an off road go fast suspension, which means high compliance springs and shocks along its a lower gear ratio set up for go fast instead of yanking heavy trailers around. But I don’t think using a gladiator sport or sport S with the better gear ratio, smaller diameter tires and lighter curb weight would have improved it enough to tie or snag 2nd place.

Cruise will automatically apply the breaks though. That’s the reason they don’t use it so they can measure break applications. Maintaining speed with cruise is easy until the breaks overheat. My 2019 Colorado wouldn’t need to break that much. It’s a really disappointing result for the new truck.

@roberttorres380910 ай бұрын
On your comments on fuel mileage in the Colorado, you should ask your contacts if with smaller displacement engines and turbos they have to run a richer fuel/air ratio to run the engine cooler? In piston aircraft fuel can be used to cool the engine by running rich but you burn more fuel. A good comparison would be the f150 5.0 vs 3.5 on the IKE?
@jastrckl9 ай бұрын
turbocharged engines always have a difference in brake specific fuel consumption due to this necessity for extra cooling. On the colorado high output 2.7, they mitigate this a little bit with piston oil squirrels in the crankcase. Still seems like they could have gotten a few more MPG out of it, especially with the auto stop/start and capability of shutting off 2 cylinders in cruise
@roberttorres38099 ай бұрын
@@jastrckl thank you , I did not think about the piston oil squirts , would be interesting to see how they help in this cooling process and have a discussion on it . I wonder if the fuel air ratio is changed as the cylinder temps go up or if they detect detonation causing to go richer or leaner .

That hybrid battery would be back to full really quick so not much of an advantage as the battery needs to be empty in order to take the energy generated. My hybrid maverick battery is full after going about half mile or so downhill. It's ecvt which sucks for engine braking after battery is full.

@@marklihsu Thanks, we absolutely love it. Yes, you’re correct about the regen braking in the Powerboost. Something else I’ve noticed is the turbos do not spool up as much as they do in the straight Ecoboost. It’s quite easy, in regular driving, to avoid the turbos. Also, in tow/haul mode when towing our RV, the electric motor is there to assist regularly. Ford did a nice job on this hybrid powertrain.
