One thing that strikes me is your ability to fly and video simultaneously. The whoops of boy-like joy seem to be the result of careful planning and meticulous attention to detail (like your models). The amount of support equipment you bring out to the field must be impressively complete and organized. I don't think there is anything as dramatic as a rubber powered biplane in the air...I love the sound of the power burst. Beautiful plane, beautiful flying. Thank you.

Thx, Ken. Setting up various cams has become more routine, so it doesn't distract as much as it had early on. It's a carnival show sometimes... But most important to me is that I use the good air & conditions as efficiently as possible, since they're a rarity. I never know what I have until I see it later, but I'm always pleased to know that I've recorded the entire process...good or bad.

I came across this yesterday and felt compelled to revisit today. I built balsa gliders in the 70s and thought I knew a bit about model planes, but I had no idea there were such powerful rubber motor planes. I get a good vibe from watching this, almost quasi-meditative. I also find the video well shot and edited. Thank you for sharing your experiments and your excitement.

Your models are so perfectly built, they remind me of my late Father (RIP). My dad was a perfectionist, he built some astounding model planes and passed the love for this hobby onto myself. I've never been as precise as he used to be but I've had many happy hours building planes :-).

Hello from northern Thailand, really enjoyed your video. I'm an electric guy, expat Canadian retired here. Flying and building foamies but the real challenge is the heat. That field you flew at made me homesick for eastern Canada where in summer it's easy to find a soft hay field big like yours. Not the case here, every inch grows rice or something. And even after the crop is done fields are hard stubble, so I missed your dandylion, plush grass. Kudos on your patience trying little changes along the testing. I never was exposed to your aspect of the hobby and now see it's details, details that count. Nice music and that slow Mo of you launching was "Budddddaaahhhh" . All the best. Tim - Chiangrai.

Excellent series of videos. So instructive to all of us who try to get these birds into the sky. Just a word or two if I may: I think that you would have been better off keeping an undercambered airfoil, maybe more or less so, but definitely undercambered. At lower speed and higher alpha, such as when climbing, an undercambered airfoil gains efficiency over flatbottom airfoil, the slower, and higher the alpha, the more efficiency is gained. Undercamber does not affect longitudinal stability and does not add drag until the airspeed is fairly high. This kind of mode is, of course, not a high airspeed type. However, adding under-camber moves the MAC (Mean Aerodynamic Centre or Neutral point) aft which means that the Cg must proportionally also move aft (but not too close to the AC) so that the stabilizer will maintain pitch authority. As you know, the distance that the Cg is forward of the MAC is crucial for getting the best stability vs. performance. Reconstructing the wing, making it lighter, etc. is a major change that in and of itself might result in increased or at last changed performance. By doing both that AND changing the airfoil, any change in flight performance thereafter cannot be reliably or accurately attributed to either. As you know, with all biplanes the angles of incidence of the wings both relative to the thrust or to the datum line, and to each other, plus the mean decalage of the wings makes an enormous difference in longitudinal stability and flight performance. Any misalignment of these crucial angles can be a great detriment to good performance. This model is clearly a leftie. It's likely as simple and annoying a matter of some slight built-in twist in one of the wings. Also, I suspect that this airplane's reluctance to climb may be a matter of insufficient incidence. The increased decalage that adding just a smidge of incidence to the top wing would add some nose up attitude, and would also, of course, increase longitudinal stability as well. A win-win. So many parameters, so many choices.
