Maximillian is one of the best designed villains in cinema history. He doesn't need to say anything, just his design, and mere presence inspires fear and terror. His shape, denotes strength, the colour of dark red is sinister, the fact he doesn't walk and hovers like a demon towards makes him able to sneak up on you. And that beaming red eye visor, what you think is an eye, shows he can see you, but not have to stare right into your eyes to do it. In other words, he can be starring at you without you knowing what exactly he's looking at you. Then there's that sinister malevolent humming noise he makes, which is quiet enough to not hear from a distance, but once you do hear it, you know he's too close for you to get away.

Yes. Absolutely. I believe he’s the greatest robot designed in cinema history next to R2D2. He’s so menacing and he never utters a sound other than the whirling of the blades and that ominous hum. I have a theory that Maximillian was constructed from several labor force robots that used to be on board (like BOB).It would explain the line where BOB says he is the last one, and why he is so battered, he happened to escape the torture of becoming Maximillian. The similarities such as hovering, a fully articulated head, laser resistance, and artificial intelligence make it feasible.

If so, Rhinehart probably figured to leave at least one L.F robot would be prudent. The theory I saw was that Kate's dad, Frank's brain is inside Maximillian but then wouldn't he have recognized Kate? Did he get lobotomized like the rest of the crew? *spoiler alert* at the end when Rhinehart is imprisoned inside Max for eternity was Frank set free? I personally don't think it's Frank inside Max but who knows?

If I recall correctly it says in the novelisation that Maximillians stalked and tortured the others to destruction after months of abuse - that is why Bob is so beat up he's the last to not be torn to bits by the sadistic robot or had not thrown themselves out into space to get away from him. That is why I wonder about the security robots they seem un-abused - so perhaps Maximillian likes them for some reason. It's also possible some of them may have been destroyed to stop them warning the crew before their take over was complete. Though I'd guess the doc just pumped sleep gas into their rooms and then had them converted one at a time.. Perhaps they have medical robot we never see.

Curiously when I watched that scene again years later to me it looked like an absolute desperation move. V.I.N CENT was running scared, none of his weapons working as Max was tearing through walls like a slasher villain, finally catching him in a crushing grip. Vinny just happened to have a drill built into his front facing panel and had enough wits left to deploy it. That it worked almost seemed to be luck.

@@steampunker7 It was the proverbial "brute strength" vs. "intelligence." That is what it was supposed to represent. Disney at the time was very proud of its fully automated robot using its Disney engineering (the Imagineers) from its amusement parks to create Vincent unlike Star Wars R2-D2 and C-3PO that had humans inside of suits. In fact, they wanted the eyes on V.I.N.CENT to move but when the cost was getting to high, they cut it out and only the head could move to show expression by raising its top. Overall it was an engineering marvel although this movie never amounted to the success of Star Wars which as we all know Disney eventually bought out from Lucasfilms because they never could compete with it.

@@steampunker7 there's a lot of clever foreshadowing in this film. Reinhardt compares VinCENT and Max to David and Goliath. Remember Goliath only lost because he totally underestimated his opponent. Max lost because he thought VinCENT was 'harmless' and a pushover like Old BOB was. VinCENT knew he had a diamond tipped drill. Max didn't. He deliberately drew Max away from the crew and allowed him to get close enough to use it. Brains over brawn.

My grandfather took my cousin and I to see this movie when it first came out. Kmart was next door to the theater and I was lucky enough for my grandfather purchasing the toy Maximilian and BoB and one of the robot soldiers. A great night. I have no idea what happened to the toy figures to this day. I'm 50 now

The story, or the writing sucked. Wasn't engaging enough. Could've been done better. Black Hole, Star Trek:TMP, Moonraker & ALIEN were the big sci fi movies of '79. ST was straight up boring, Roddenberry was stroking himself. Black Hole was OK, needed better direction. Moonraker was good. ALIEN was great!

The ending of this movie was a disappointment. It's as if the writers suddenly stopped getting paid, so they finished the movie with this quasi-religious mess, no explanations or anything, with Maximillian somehow combined with the evil scientist and watching over what I assume to be hell.

Star Wars has a great story book and record of a similar story called Droid World (also a Star Wars comic book) a small robot planet made of space junk, consisting entirely of robots, run by the Cyborg genius, Kligson. Maximillian was an Imperial Droid called Z-X3.

A good design, and mercifully divorced from the overly R2-D2-esque V.I.N.CENT and B.O.B.. Maximilian is supposed to have been knocked together by Reinhart, and displays many of the 'High School Science Fair' aspects of robot design; crudely articulated and perhaps unduly menacing. I especially like the hand-tooling of the exterior surfaces, which is amazingly well reproduced in the model kit produced by MPC.
