Super interesting video! as always! Your view on fidgeting got me thinking, though. As someone with ADHD I always find myself fidgeting, even when I'm fully focused on something. In fact, when I need to focus on studying, homework or whatever, I make sure I have something to fidget with, so I can focus better and not get distracted. The same with listening to podcasts (yours for example): when I listen to a podcast alone, I tend to get easily distracted, but when I'm doing something creative, like drawing or coloring, or playing a mindless game, I tend to be able to focus on the podcast much better! Aaaand ofcourse, hypnosis helps me focus too :) Even when in a hypnotic trance, I tend to fidget sometimes. It works great when the hypnotist uses this, which is something I always do! I often sneak in a suggestion like: "Every little distraction makes you go even deeper", or "And as you're fidgeting, your body can just do that and move all on its own, while you can go even deeper" Just some food for thought :)

If I remember correctly, wasn't there a case where Erickson had a client who didn't want him to talk about anything not physically observable in the room, and so he continually directed this person's attention to different objects, constantly shifting attention until the client fell into a pattern of following Erickson's suggestions, which then become more and more focused on the "comfortable chair", and then to "the thoughts inside your mind", and finally into even more hypnotic elements, eventually leading into trance. Seems like this is how we would work with someone who has developed a habit of not paying attention to any one thing for more than a few seconds.

It's still directing of attention. Such a technique would require a lot of calibration and skill in Ericksonian hypnotic language.

This's Right ... This can be an issue with the younger population who are not used to eye contact and always seeking distraction. Thank you for this, great information as always. Can you talk about how to better get Teenagers/Young adults to follow your instructions? Thank You.
