Using zip lock bags in the cans sounds like a great idea. Thrive cans have a decorative quality that is quite pleasing to the eyes. I saw another RV living prepper who had the cans displayed around his living space on a wrap around shelf. I was impressed. I have clutter that serves no purpose. Thrive cans are beautiful to look at and provide comfort against hunger. It is quality food!!!

Use a coffee filter with several tablespoons of rice in it. It will absorb moisture in the can.

Bill, thank you for this information. We also love using our Thrive Foods daily, as well as for emergency prepping. By the way, we also are loving those Fuji apples a lot! God Bless.

Using the freezer is a good idea. You could probably even repack ham and turkey in mylar bags and oxygen absorbers. I've made those part of my preps along with canning jar lids. I do meal prepping because my dietary needs are different than my husband's, so I make quantities of my meals and freeze them. Plus, I freeze his left overs and it saves me from extra work at meal time. I'm always looking for meal ideas he will also like.

I use mason jars and vacuum seal the jars with my FoodSaver so all air is removed from the jar. The end result is no air or moisture in the jar. The lids can be reused forever with this method. It makes a factory tight seal. For the meats I also put the vacuum sealed mason jar in the refrigerator or freezer for extra protection.
@karenredding94397 жыл бұрын
Yes, buy a vacuum sealer for your ham and turkey after opening, then freeze in portion of family size. Apples have a little moisture so take a coffee filter and put white rice in it and use a twistie to close it up. I keep my salt close to my stove for cooking, but by putting white rice into my shaker the salt never sticks or hardens. I also add white rice in coffee filters to my sugar, and my bag of sugar never turns hard.

Also, once opened, transfer the dry contents of the can into a ziplock bag - squeeze excess air out before each resealing. Takes less space than maintaining the half-empty can. And less air space to dehumidify with the methods suggested by yourself and viewer. Good to know about the fast-rancid issue of some of the meats.
@ThatEarthyChic7 жыл бұрын
I just put the food in a 1/2 gallon mason jar with an oxygen absorber then sealed it with my food saver. The food is as good as if the can was never opened.

I do mostly meals in a jar recipes and pack in quart size mylars. I will probably do that with half the turkey and ham when I first open them. I like using the jars too in my regular pantry. They look so country-ish and pretty! It's also convenient to have dinner all put together. Bill, does it extend the life of the food even longer then if you put it in the refrigerator?
@LiveSimpleLiveFree8 жыл бұрын
I doubt it. What I'm talking about, here, is not extending the life, but rather stopping premature spoilage.

The meat is so good. The sausage has such a great taste . Used it on pizza tonight. Speaking. sauce with sausage is next. My tomatoe powder was a brick when I opened it so I just put it in my food processor. Every thing is great.
@LiveSimpleLiveFree8 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you're enjoying the sausage. It's great, That's what we keep trying to tell everyone, LOL. I don't know why the tomato powder would be a brick. But it does break up easily.

I live in Florida, very humid here. So far I haven't had a problem. I guess I use things up pretty quick. The apples don't last a month for me :-) because I eat them. Also having a supply of food that tastes great with a long shelf life offers some peace of mind knowing that if an emergency happens, big or small you at least have some good food to eat. Some people will say oh nothing will ever happen, but I don't know anyone who gets through life without some problems. Could be a job loss, health problem, a storm.. Doesn't have to be the end of the world. May God bless and have mercy on us all.

I am receiving my first order soon. After opening there is no way I will use all the food in the size cans I ordered within a year. Would I be able to repackage some of it in canning jars, use oxy absorbers and sealing jars with food saver?
@LiveSimpleLiveFree4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you won't get 25 years that way, but you will certainly extend the life considerably.

Some of the "newer" labels on the cans aren't including the Shelf Life anymore. Any reason why? Example: the new Pulled Pork and Kale cans (but there are others as well). Yes, I still get it off the website, but was just curious.
@LiveSimpleLiveFree8 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I have no idea why. They don't include me in those decisions, LOL.
@donnabowers83327 жыл бұрын
I would contact Thrive to get clarification of why the shelf labeling isn’t included on those cans. I would think if they want people to continue purchasing that item, that they would watch their labeling info. I mean that’s the purpose of purchasing this food, is the shelf life.

What about Food Saver. We use this on anything we freeze.
@LiveSimpleLiveFree6 жыл бұрын
You certainly can use food saver if you want. It might make a difference. But we have not found it to be necessary. In fact, we had one, but we just got rid of it last week, because we never use it, and we don’t have room to store it in our tiny place.
@mindyvaughn82178 жыл бұрын
Bill, is there anyway to determine how much you are spending per meal with thrive? We sort of have a food budget and we look at how much we are spending per meal. It's just the 2 of us and I tried to figure out by looking at the cost of the items on the Thrive web site but my math is awful. Thanks for the info. I'm in Bama and I can't even open a bag of chips without them going soft. We were 111 heat index the other day and I think the humidity was 70%.
@LiveSimpleLiveFree8 жыл бұрын
I know of no way to determine your cost per meal. I'm sure it's possible, but that math is way beyond me as well. All I know is that when we started using Thrive on a regular basis, our cost per month dropped a couple of hundred dollars. But we kept our food budget the same and used to extra to start building our Thrive long-term storage.
