Magnificent finish, you did a fantastic job on the gate. Beautifully done. Pity we could not see it in situ for its full glory. Years ago when I was in Preston, I did loads of wrought iron hanging baskets, the guys were skeptical at first having a female in their workshop but they soon realise I was there to learn and work just as hard as them ,twisting each bar and endless spot welding , painting etc, great fun, very relaxing so I can understand why you was enjoying it. Then we moved onto working on the canal barges, but I did the compound angles etc in the carpentry needed on the barges rather than the metal work needed on them, which was a fun challenge.

Mate! You've got your own sand blasting rig? That is SO cool. I know you don't much like doing the pay jobs ... but I'm glad that lovely old gate was left in your hands for repair instead of someone who wouldn't do it justice. You, Sir, are a craftsman. I actually found it very exciting - there's room for every type of video but I, for one, find these eminently practical videos far more enjoyable than what currently passes for the majority of smithing videos.

Nice repair. Good to see you put the thought into the surface finish. Too often restorations strip off the age of a piece and defeat the point of repairing old and not just making new. If it looks new, what was the point? Nice gate, good for another 100yrs. :)

Wonderful, ended up looking great, do you need to use a special rod other than 6010 or 7018 to weld wrought iron? or is it sort of like cast iron where you heat it weld it and cool it slowly
@maximusironthumper7 жыл бұрын
Nope just standard 6013 on this. By the time this gate was made the wrought iron was nice high quality stuff and I find for arc welding, can be treated much like mild steel. Cast iron is a whole different can of worms!

Cracking video, love your stuff and way of life.....magic, quick question - what medium do you use in your blaster ?
@maximusironthumper6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I now use recycled glass (not glass beads), before I could get that I used to use 'jblast superfine' which was copper oxide. The glass is not quite as effective but cheaper and cleaner! Suppliers of both are on ebay.

Super job Maximus. The Norse spirit lives on! I have some great old Victorian gates that I intend to restore, but I was hoping to use mig to let fresh metal in. Is that something you would agree with - seeing as you use stick, or would you not recommend it?
@maximusironthumper7 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I'm using arc welding as my arc welders are more powerful than my mig and with an arc I can weld cast iron, wrought iron and steel. If your mig is powerful enough (200amps or so) then yes it's fine for repair of wrought iron and steel (if it's not that powerful you can get the job done by grinding very deep bevels into everything before welding and then using several passes).
@KRAMPUS19337 жыл бұрын
Ah, just as I thought. I have a Lincoln 180 and I weld chassis rails/motorbike frames and fabricate steel stuff all the time. I asked around a few smithys about mig, and they all raised their eyebrows, but I guess it is like asking a barber if you need a haircut. They all want money, and they cant earn if you do it yourself! By the way. I just moved out to the South of France and intend on adopting an autonomous lifestyle, growing food, keeping poultry and so on. When I found your channel, it lifted me right up, because I know that we can all return to this way of life, to cherish what we have rather than yearn for what we have not, and learn to reduce our consumption at the same time as having a fuller richer life. Hail to you Maximus!
@AddictedtoProjects7 жыл бұрын
If welding cast iron with a MIG, it also help pre-heating the parent metal. That way you get less of a chance of a cold-tear at the weld joint. Another excellent repair process for cast/wrought iron is to braze the stuff with Silicone Bronze. That's probably the most appropriate and most secure repair. But you'll need *A LOT* of heat to get the parent metal red hot. Otherwise the bronze brazing wire won't melt. Good luck! ;)
@KRAMPUS19337 жыл бұрын
Addicted to Projects; I have only tig and mig, right now but I can heat the surrounding parent metal up no problem. Most - if not all of the material I need to weld on these gates is wrought iron, so in terms of what I intend to do, that's good advice. Thanks!
