What this really highlighted for me is the importance of tone and instrumentation in music. The fact that this was all played with the same instrumentation made the differences between the modes much more subtle to my ear. A very cool video though regardless, thank you
@maxkonyi Жыл бұрын
Yeah that's exactly the idea here - keep every element as static as possible while only changing the mode. This prevents other factors from being associated with the modal sound.

Hello dear Max Really enjoying and being blessed by your videos ❤❤ About this video i get to have 2 questions Would absolutely love it if you answer😉 So my first question is Are you using parallel modes or relative modes?! I guess they are relative modes, beacause in relative modes the key does not change, but i just wanna make sure about it I may completely be wrong tho, i really don't know !! And if you're using the parallel modes, what will happen if you use the relative modes, will it be wrong? Or sound bad for some reason !!? And if you're using the relative what would happen if we use the parallel modes?!!will it sound bad?!! Or alot different? And the second question is The last mode, you called it "magic", im really confused, what do you mean by "magic" im just giving it a guess maybe you meant the locrian mode but still just wanna make sure God bless you brother have a great day🙏🌹
@maxkonyi Жыл бұрын
Hey! Happy you're enjoying the videos. In case you don't know, there is a follow-up video to this one which goes into some of the theory and composition of the track. 1). Parallel modes. Each mode ends on some kind of point of tension which then resolves back to the same tonic at the start of the next mode. Hearing the modes in parallel allows you to hear the differences more strongly since you've actually hearing new pitches each time instead of hearing the same pitches while changing the tonic. 2). "Magic mode" is a term I got from one of my teachers, W. A. Mathieu. It's essentially the free use of all parallel modes at once, which means it's possible to use all 12 notes without leaving the key. So you can think of it as being the entire chromatic scale centered on some particular tonic which gives meaning to all other pitches. Hope that helps!

Thanks for this interesting video. I'd like to ask: considering that the melody touch the second degree of the scale just in the very last note, the version with frigian mode is basically the same of the eolian... because this last short note at the end it is not really strong end present enough to make feel like we are in frigian. Am I wrong? Or there is also some significant change in arrangement? And also I would like ask... why for show the different "color" or emotional environment of several modes u decide to don't end the melody on the tonic, don't you think that end on the first degree of the scale could help to confirm and clarify the mode in which we are? Maybe also considering that in church modes the first note of the a modal scale was named in latin "finalis"🤔... indeed 😉 Thanks in advance to Max and whoever would be so gentle to let me know what think about it.
@maxkonyi Жыл бұрын
Hey, I responded to the first question via another comment you wrote but I'll paste it here as well: Good question - even though the 2 only appears once in the melody, it appears many times in the harmony parts. All of the parts change to reflect each new mode, so we are hearing all the notes of each mode many times, spread across all of the instruments, while the tonic is maintained. That's what produces the effect. For the second question: Each example ends right before the tonic chord and melody note appear. This is because the following example begins on the tonic. Each example leaves you hanging until the next example begins to resolve it, but it is resolved into the new mode. Your idea of including the tonic at the end of each example might make the modal feeling stronger, but I prefer the experience of one mode modulating into the next like this. Artistic choice!

This is a great demo! So just to get this straight, only the notes that change with the mode have been shifted and the rest remain as they are?
@maxkonyi2 жыл бұрын
As much as possible. There are some cases where was a G, let's say, in the original (which is also in every other mode here) but that is now an A because the chord had to change at that part to keep the tonal center in focus. Beyond that, everything stays the same.

That's cool, but to be honest I didn't feel the mixolydian that much, that b7 sounded melodicaly at some point? for me the melody sounded pretty much like Ionian, although the harmony was there I know. But I am use to some music that is much more explicit on that mode.
@maxkonyi11 ай бұрын
Yeah it was an interesting challenge writing a melody that could be adapted to all modes. In some I had to lean on the harmony more to bring certain degrees forward since I was not 'able' to change the melody besides conforming it to the mode. However, I definitely get the mixo feel when taken altogether.
@filipedecastro471811 ай бұрын
@@maxkonyi I think I still dont associate mixo that much with his Harmony. I am Very used to baião music in Brazil, and Melodies are very clear mixo, sometimes lydian/mixo or Dorian as well (like blues mixo with added #4 or b3 ) and It uses the b7 as a recitative note a lot, always stoping on It and repeating.
@filipedecastro471811 ай бұрын
There's a music from Guinga that IS a perfect example of the mixo b7 b3 feeling... Its called "Chá de panela" it's a song he did for Hermeto Pascoal. Melody solphege goes like: Do(1) Mi(3) So(5) Ta(b7) La(6) So Fi(#4) So Do Ma(b3) Ma Re(2) Do Mi
@filipedecastro471811 ай бұрын
Another music that is cool to practice transposing to diferent modes is "Ovo" from Hermeto, It is originally on mixolydian but as a good exercise It is cool to transpose ir for other modes.
@maxkonyi11 ай бұрын
@@filipedecastro4718 Yup I know what you mean. Of course, using the b3 would be outside of the possibilities for this particular video since I needed to stay completely diatonic to the mode. In reality, there is very little musc which stays entirely diatonic to one particular mode and your examples are good ones. A ton of classic rock is also very mixo heavy but with various other degrees coming in and out all the time.

A single Mode on their own is boring. You can barely hear the difference between modes, they all sound the same. the real magic happens when you MIX modes. When you replace one chord in a chord progression, from a parallel mode.
