Yes! For me, it's the Op.59 no.1... there's something about the mazurkas, and the way that she plays them.

What's astounding about her Chopin Mazurkas-at least as reported by Olivier Bellamy in his biography of Martha-is that a month prior to the competition, she apparently didn't know what the mazurkas were! Hard to believe, especially given that she not only won the overall competition, but won for best mazurkas as well. But then, she is a genius!

@@donaldwright6617 As with all truly great artists, her ability to understand music in all its complexity with so little effort is phenomenal. Apparently Fou Ts'ong helped her with the mazurkas

Thank you so much Max!! Incredible!!! Chopin’s Mazurkas are notoriously difficult to get “right” but it seems to come so naturally to Martha…

Max…thanks for posting this. She plays so beautifully. I heard that interview she did with Kovacevich, who is the father of her daughter Stephanie. They were supposed to play the mazurkas without disclosing which person was playing which mazurka. The record company didn’t like the idea. And Argerich told Stephen ‘she hadn’t learned them yet.’ His answer to her was ‘yes…we’ve all heard that story before.’ She didn’t seem to agree with that and told him she didn’t have time. But we all know Martha does what she wants…….when she wants.. But she’s allowed. because no one would argue she is the Queen of the piano. I would love anything she plays whenever she wants. Truly……..the BEST!!!

These mazurkas are very sensitive and usually internal, Argerich never fails to capture such a magical atmosphere with them, time stops...

this is incredible, the Op.59 had me on the edge of my seat. as much as anybody dislikes coughing sounds from the audience, I thought they add an immediacy to this. Martha Argerich was a girl back then and she turned out a performance like this, no edits, TB patients be damned, is just jaw-dropping.

To me, all the mazurki except three set of Opus 59 recorded in Warwar are miraculously fantastic!!! Opus 59 is, I presume, too much affected by Michelangeli's playing, and not her music.
