Someone in my last video reminded me that I likely don't need the precision driver any more because I have a 4mm bit driver and 1/4" driver. So I replaced it with the can opener and also tried the T-shank holder made by the same individual.

It’s really cool to see that you can swap out tools from these multi tools with tools you would want/need to use more often/regularly. Modifying a multitool to install the tools you want or need is a huge upgrade, and makes the tool fit your needs.

Like for T-shank on Arc. I continue to repeat - metal saw is must have on multitool and it is possible only with t-shank. The last change I would do - to change the wood saw to serrated blade, it's always better to have it. And for the wooden saw you can simply keep it in the pouch. It would be no brainer if Leatherman did arc with such number of tools.

I fully agree, I EDC a p4, I already added a leatherman bit exchanger and am considering getting rid of the tiny file and adding a t-shank for it. I have all the pieces, but I'm going to wait until my Arc comes in so that if I have any issues I can still EDC a free style leatherman.

I think the key to the t shank upgrade is if you can replace the saw with it because I’ve struggled to find the short leatherman saw to be useful camping compared to Victorinox and dedicated small folding saws like the opinel. But the longer Bosch t shank jigsaw changes things.

The removable diamond file for touching up the main blade isn't a terrible idea. In fact I'm more in favor of adding a serrated blade and having a tshank for the saw. I use a dedicated serrated blade all the time.

Hello Leatherman……. I hope your listening! In the video that you released a couple weeks ago about listening to customers and working on the design of the ARC for the last five years…… Yes, a standard 1/4 inch bit driver and T-shank holder should have been integrated into the ARC! Also, the micro bit driver…. It’s a waste of space! The functionality should have been integrated in with the bit driver. It’s time to go from good to great and really start listening to customers! Hire this man as a consultant!

My old Gerber Legend 800, still my EDC from a PX from back in 2001/2, has something like that, it mounts mini jig-blades. It is one of the best little things I had seen in a multitool at the time (that and the outside accessible main tools was super rare back then). I have a diamond grit "Saw" on there that can cut through most anything I have come across, but wont cut your finger, and I keep a wood saw blade in the belt pouch with it. I should find a diamond file for it, that would be handy.

T shank holder eliminates the need for the dumb wood saw and gives you the ability to saw through whatever you want to saw through within reason. The file that comes with the t shank holder is garbage and is in no way a good replacement for the arc file. Nice bit holder btw

Dom, do you think there can be enough space in Arc to install the serrated blade/gut hook combo from the Charge? I'd be interested in adding the t-shank to accommodate this. I have no need for the can opener, bottle opener or micro driver. I'd be keeping the proprietary flat bit driver.

I wish it had a t-shank adapter and the serrated blade. In fact, I’d love a mini version of the Surge. The 1/4” driver would be great and I’d certainly give up the can opener to get it, but yeah, I’d certainly consider dumping the eyeglass screwdriver for the can opener.

I tend to use the serrated blade for heavier rope. It works especially well for climbing rope and hemp. I prefer to keep the primary blade for more precise cutting. Also, a lot of people don’t carry another blade and it’s a good backup. A lot of first responders I know aren’t allowed to carry a dedicated knife but can carry a multitool. Don’t get me wrong, I really appreciate the magna cut blade. I just wish that it also had a serrated blade.

I built the t shank with a hacksaw in my free p4 instead of the serrated blade. With the adapter for the Phillips screwdriver, I can also use the Leatherman bits. So it's almost my perfect multitool. A free with black scales would be even nicer.

1 thing I figured out is that you should be able to pull out the bit driver half way and use it in a L shape for more torque. I think this is the only tool you can do this with the bit driver, since it's on the outside. It's probably going to be more comfortable than other Leatherman, since it's the only one you can do that with the tool closed. I think I over think things, but I also like to make sure that it will work for me, before spending this much money on a tool. Is it stable enough to do that? I am sure that the frame is strong enough for that. The bit adapter would probably fail before the frame. This also has the toolset I have been wanting and the steel should hold up better than a off brand multitool. If it is stable, I do want 1, I just hope Leatherman will fix the issue with that torx bit, by the time I get 1.
@maxlvledc
@maxlvledc Жыл бұрын
Don't..if your putting that much torque on a multitool most of the pivot screws will break. Maybe it won't but your playing with fire. That kind of torque needs a ratcheting socket wrench.
@Spanky8402
@Spanky8402 Жыл бұрын
@maxlvledc I don't put that much torque on it. I have been using my Multiforce for 2 years and my Knifeless Rebar for a year in a L shape. Normally I am either tightening or putting in a screw over my head and the L shape is easier to use at a awkward position. For the most part, they are 3.5 inch wood screws or smaller that siding, decks or porches have. A few times I used it on door hinge screws. The multi tool barely flexes. I mostly use the strength of my hand a wrist. I have worked construction for years and I have broke a few tools, but I learned how much torque to not put into a tool. I think your thinking I am trying to tighten lug nuts on a car torque. The only thing I have done on a car is pull out fuses, tightening the battery, and tighten smaller screws and nuts on a alternator wire or a screw to open a fuse box. Most of those car tasks, I only opened the multi tool to a L shape, for reach. I help people who are broke down on the side of the road all the time and some of those fuse boxes are deep down and my 1 extension I carry isn't long enough and those screws are in plastic and are never tight, if it has a screw cause most cars have clip on fuse covers. I do appreciate your message, because most people would put way too much torque and use they're entire strength on it. A ratchet driver can get stripped with to much torque also. Like every tool, they all have failure loads. I broke a few ratchets, until I learned to use a breaker bar. 😆 🤣 😂

So hear me out, I just ordered my ARC and my intentions is to do a trial run of carrying my Surge in it's sheath, also in my left front pocket a zippered holder for the bit kits and ratchet extension, and instead of a pocket knife, carry the ARC in the right front pocket, so if I need 2 pliers, got 'em, if I need two drivers, got 'em, etc... also since I work as a mechanic this would come up from time to time and would save me from running back to my tool box and on the weekend I usually slightly down size my Surge to either my Charge TTI or the Free p2, or p4. The ARC would fill in for this on weekends with ease. Just an idea. Thanks for all your videos!

For my ideal tool, id do this: (1) Place the new double ended bit driver you installed, as that does triple duty in giving you access to the full-size bits, the Leatherman bits, and makes the precision driver redundant - thus freeing up space to re-place the can opener. (2) I would also take out the saw and replace it with a serrated blade, as I just do not use a saw nearly often enough to warrant it as a permanent install if i were given the choice. (3) Lastly, I would place the t-shank, as that would give me the potential of having a spare file for on-the-go sharpening as you suggested, the use of a saw if I did actually need it, and/or the utilization of whatever other accessories may be able to go into it - perhaps a scalpel or what-have-you.

As a test one summer many years ago, I used a knife to open all cans when I was on bivouacs in the Reserves. We had the trusty P-38 in every Rat Pack, and they are awesome, (I use one in my kitchen!), but it was quick, easy, and safe enough, opening food cans with a knife The MagnaCut is going to slice cans open easily if you're stuck, so the can opener (and especially bottle opener) is waste of space on a Leatherman. PLUS with the T-shank holder diamond file? ..You can re-sharpen the MagnaCut, easily anytime. I WONDER if the existing Diamond file / metal file in the Arc, could have the T-shank cut out, so it fit back in? Maybe with a laser cutter? or Patience and a Dremel??

Does anybody know of a way to mod the arc to get the gut hook on it? For some reason I thought it came with it like the charge does and I’m kinda disappointed at the price that it didn’t. My arc came damaged in the mail and I was thinking about asking them to send me a charge tti instead bc it has the hook

Or, get a magnacut implement and a t shank holder for the got tool.

I'm amazing how many people think they need 2 blades...it kind of defeats the purpose of having magnacut blade at all.

@maxlvledc serrated works great cutting up cardboard but thats really all ive used it for. Kinda no purpose if youve got a magnacut blade on there

I had considered replacing something on my P4 with a T-shsnk adapter, but what? The ling tools on the P4 tend to be shorter than the long tools on other multi-tools, and the idea of shortening the P4's long tools is not appealing. The diamind file on the Arc is OK, but not great. It is not a consistent width, and has a big slot in it. Leatherman did improve some implements with the Arc, but the toolset is still sub-par. The following items need work: wrong main blade profile, missing serrated blade, diamind file is an inconsistent shape, package opener sucks, bit drivers are laughable, scissors is a joke, wood saw is unidirectional. How many bit drivers can be used at once? Use one that is a standard 1/4" driver, and make it so it doesn't wobble. Get rid of the other. Fix the pliers. Fix the tools so they don't self-deploy. The Arc is another half-baked tool. If Leatherman would put more effort into QC and engineering, there would be fewer warranty claims. I have purchased a bunch of multi-tools from Leatherman. Every single one has had to go directly back, due to QC issues. Some have had to go back 2 or 3 times, with Leatherman having to pick up the tab for shipping the 2nd and 3rd times. Maybe these costs don't affect them, but I suspect they do. If you had a P4 and an Arc, which woild be easier to "fix"? Well, I could swap out 3 implements on the P4, and have an excellent multi-tool, or swap out 4 or 5 implements on the Arc.

What if you put the t shank holder in the middle where the micro driver was? This way you can hold t shank blades like a metal saw or pvc saw? You can’t close the tool but you can hold the blade at least. Maybe a shim to hold the micro driver? -John Arthur

thats a very very interesting idea I have not considered...but you would give up two inner tools for it. so you wouldn't have reamer or can opener or anything like that.

At $250 and it showing up needing to be modded. Im going to stick to my army of Wave +'s , ST 300's and Rebars. I have like 6 of those floating around bought second hand for a total of about $300. I lose one, theres 5 more left. If i drop an ARC on a jobsite only a saint is giving that back. The ARC also does nothing a Surge cant. Except what? bali action? pfffft..... Im NOT impressed at this price point

Can you please not say you will not send this back to Leatherman. You have the legal right to send this item back because you own it. Leatherman would have to prove you damaged the item by modding it according to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

do you happen to know the difference between the type-A and type-D bit replacements in the ebay link you provided? Or rather, why someone would go with one over the other? It largely seems like the same thing, except that the type-D requires an adapter piece to utilize the flat bits. it just seems more convoluted, and i don't understand why one would want that, or even need it, if the type A has the capability to fit full-size and flat bits in the same cut out.
