I have a hedgehog named Morty, one of the things that I learned when doing research was that hedgehogs shouldn’t be picked up with thick gloves like that because it completely blocks your scent and freaks them out. It is better to take a wash cloth or small towel and hold them instead or best with your bare hands although their quills are uncomfortable. Also I’m not surprised you got pooped on because hedgehogs are notorious for pooping a lot. I know when I first got Morty as a baby he would use the restroom every time I tried to handle him. It is better now that he is a year old and has a bit more control.

Riley Sal yeah he’s gotten quite larger I think he might be done growing though but I don’t know for sure. you have to be mindful of their diet though because they can be prone to obesity and that can shorten their lifespan. That’s why you can’t feed them too much mealworms because of that and put them on high quality cat food that is low in fat and good in protein. “Hedgehog food” that they sell in pet stores are very unhealthy for them and full of junk and often have little to none of the things they need in their diet.

As a reputable hedgehog breeder, Im actually happy that you get the vibes, that its a wrong thing to be happening. These poor babies need hides to sleep in and they should not even be together in such stressful situations. And freezedried mealworms are super unhealthy for them so if thats the only kind of insects they get to eat, rhey will probably develop MBD.

I don't plan on getting a hedgehog soon, but it's something that's been on the back of my mind for a while. part of why I've been hesitant is all of the misinformation out there - obviously if/when I ever get one, I want to be taking care of it properly. eating mealworms is especially all over the place in terms of information, I'm seeing some sources say "5-10 a day" and some saying "no more than 4 a week". should they be eating mealworms at all? are they okay as a treat every now and then, or should they be completely off the table? I've also seen plenty of conflicting information about their general diet as a whole, so if you're up to answering what that should look like, I'd love to hear it, but mostly I'm curious about the mealworms.

@@ouhhoh you can give them as a snack but they are much healthier when live or frozen than freeze dried. Their general diet should consist of a 3-4 different types mix of high quality cat kibble. The kibble mix has to be high meat content and we are talking 70% or more meat. The fat percentage should be around 12-14 depending on the hog. Babies can eat more fat than an overweight adult, so the fat percentage is where you adjust to make them gain or lose weight. Fiber percentage should be as high as possible. It's also good to have a variety of meat sources in the kibble, so lamb, chicken, salmon, etc. This kibble should be available 24/7 At the same time you should feed a variety of insects. Soldier fly larvae, dubia roaches, grasshoppers, etc. You can look the content of vitamins and minerals up for each kind of insect. The general rule is that they should have around 1.5 to 2 times as much calcium as phosphorus. I hope this helps. Id be glad to help more if you need! 🥰🦔

"Sonic" looks more like a streaked tenrec, which aren't hedgehogs and are native to Madagascar. They're extremely sensitive and in no way should be kept like that :(

The hedgehogs they do have there shouldn’t even be kept together :/ it’s a cute concept but i don’t think the cafe really had the welfare of the animals as a top priority
