Was it that sweet, skinny blonde lady and her son who (I thought) owned and operated the bike/kart rental spot underneath?! I met her a few years ago and befriended her during a two week solo vacation to Fort Myers Beach. She is a strong, impressive person! Although we lost touch, this is the closest I might get to contacting her to let her know I was thinking about her. I left part of my heart and soul in Fort Myers Beach, and the spot had a lot to do with that. She shared her story with me, and even invited me up one sunset for a beer. She gave me the moped I took out for entire days to Sanibel Island, the bicycle I rode south to the preserve, the three-wheeled motorcycle thing just for kicks… I will miss Ft Myers Beach. I’ll come down next Spring to help contribute to economic recovery…

I live about 7 miles inland from Fort Myers Beach, and the storm surge was about knee deep(I'm 6ft tall) at our apartment complex. The next morning when the water had receded, you can see all of the abandoned cars in the middle of the road from the storm surge. This is a day that I will never forget for as long as I live.

I'm a native Floridian and people always downplay hurricanes and don't fully grasp their destruction. You can lose everything including your life in split seconds. When Dorian hit the Bahamas we had a government official post a video on social media that showed him in waist deep water in his home… He was on the second floor… There are maps of the islands that just show how much was submerged by the surge and more than half of them were just vanished under a tide of dirty, debris filled water. Living here and seeing these sorts of hurricanes happening makes it feel like playing Russian Roulette every hurricane season. It’s no longer, “gotta trim the branches this week” or “I’ll probably need to get a roofer after this”, instead it’s “Is this the year when my home and everything I worked so hard for will be utterly ruined, as well as those of my neighbors, friends and coworkers?”

I live in Florida. I'm scared of storms because I know the power of the waves because we're boaters. In a 60' boat the waves on a sunny day can humble you so quick. Mother Nature that owns that sand, we humans are astoundingly naive that we control anything. Jacque Cousteau many years ago said on video NO ONE SHOULD LIVE WITHIN 10 miles of the coast, NO ONE. He said it should all be day parks that close at dusk but he said the greed of the unsafe building will come back to haunt us and it has. Cousteau was brilliant and no one wanted to listen to him. I have always adhered to his advice. I lost my front porch and we have roof damage and I couldn't be happier to have so little damage and a home to come back home to. I am so thankful to have followed Cousteau and all reading this should research his views. My heart ❤ goes out to those affected by Ian.🙏

I have experienced two class 5, two class 4 and numerous class 1,2 and 3 hurricanes. I have tried desperately, (with little success), to explain to people over the years of what is capable during one of these monster storms. It's not just the wind, but even more destructive at times, is the storm surges of walls of water. This is the best example of what I have witnessed myself and perhaps this can be used to educate others. Bravo to Max Olson and all who are all to be commended for their foresight in capturing such dramatic documentary footage! Thanks!

I was the one who fed countless neighbors when jensen beach got hit by Francis and Jeanne, back to back in 2004 and my road and area was without power for 4 days short of 3 months! My ex and I rescued people who decided to try and drive through flooded waters because we had a monster truck ( don't judge) that easily handles the water depths. I was EMS for St Lucie County then and went on calls to rescue or med emergencies when people refused to leave despite mandatory evacuations! And now I cannot work for the rest of my life because during Wilma, I again went on calls when no one else would, and broke my spine. So don't you dare tell me people aren't out there helping others!!

I live like 30 min from this beach and my jobsite is near the bridge to the beach. We cut 2 huge trailer parks. We had went out there the day after the storm and I'll never forget the damage. Water was literally up to the knees, huge trailers and campers tossed or upside down, jet skis and boats on top of literal trees, dead birds and bunnies floating on top of the water along with live fish and water moccasins swimming in the water, gigantic trees uprooted, and twisted metal just everywhere. Everyone that lived there had evacuated, but one married old couple. When my boss and crew got to this house (he's a good friend of my boss) he was visibly shaken and desperately in need of a smoke. He had told us the flood reached to almost the ceiling of his trailer. And mind you these trailers are on foundations so we're talking at least 15 ft high waters. Truly a storm for the textbooks.

I went into Google map of this location and walked this Ave C with the 360 view photos and this video really gives a perspective of the storm surge when compared to what the area looked like normally. It is quite far from the shore. Can’t see Max’s camera mounted on that utility pole in those photos though. Must be put there more recent than those photos. Still wondering how he powers this camera.

My mother wanted me to move to Florida. I said no. You have to deal with a hurricane like this on more then one occasion. New Jersey I saty even tho they sometimes reach here. But every year it's hitting Florida. Maybe more then once a year if God ain't on your side

He had left remote sensors at different locations to get data and footage to analyze for as long as their sensor stayed up. I’m stunned this one Made it till next day (or was that just during the eye calm at the end? I’d assume that wouldn’t offer enou time for the water to be gone already). Scary. I was watching you guys, Max but lost your stream and switched to Ryan’s channel. But my girl and I were worried about you guys bad when your live streams dropped but the other chasers all up. Glad you guys are safe and this is amazingly heartbreaking foootAge. Living up here in Tampa area for the couple days prior we were expecting that and we’re surprised when the predictions shifted suddenly. Not much evac time for them for sure. I pray they used it.

Just goes to show why you should always heed the warnings and get out if you can. No way rescue personnel could even get to you if they wanted to. The tides also play a large role in how high the surge can be. My parents own a home on the coast just north of Myrtle Beach SC. They have been there before for just a tropical storm and it scared them to death. Thoughts and prayers out to everyone.

There was no time to evacuate. We didn't receive evacuation orders until 8am on 9/27, meanwhile Tampa Bay area had already received them a day prior to us. There was nowhere to go since if we were to head north, we would be stuck in traffic and if we were to head east to Fort Lauderdale, we would have been sitting ducks with all of the tornadoes that had touched down along alligator alley.

They made it out alive and wit their 2 dogs. An amazing story and must have been terrifying for them especially when they were separated and didn’t know if each other were still alive. The fact that she hung onto a pole for 4 hrs ! With her 2 dogs ! She is a hero in my books and i wish them a great life going forward… my heart goes out to her … i know how hard she must have fought to save those dogs

There is a woman who tried to hold her ground with Sandy and when the storm surge hit they had to get out of their roof and she had 4 cats that's which she lost because sbecause she couldn't keep him under her arms and swim Gwen so people need to get out go to the shelter the shelter house to take your animals. Why do you want to live through this it's all kinds of crap in that water You don't have electricity the wind is God-awful . They're just going to have to make it mandatory mandatory and go house-to-house and and make people get out..

@@stevenruiz465 I've been in Florida almost 29 years & I have always felt like this is absolutely Paradise. I decided to stay in my house & we were hit with probably the worst the storm had to offer. To be honest, I wasn't actually scared during the storm because we weren't getting a storm surge only the horrible winds. My neighbors and so many people I know have lost their homes. I'm starting to think that living through the storm isn't the hardest part, it comes after the storm. I was never afraid before, but I am petrified that because of global warming from now on all the storms are going to be this way. It would truly kill me to leave Florida , but I'm wondering if it would eventually kill me to stay here. 😢

I think there is problem in that storm surge can look like a flood, and you can just sit there and worry about the water damage, but when the water is deep enough, suddenly you have waves and before you know it, YOUR HOUSE IS IN THE OCEAN ... DURING A HURRICANE. Not a place you want to be. I hope nobody was in that house. 😞 Great video BTW, I agree with James Bond's message that everybody in a hurricane area should have to watch this.
