Time for my very sleepy MAY WRAP UP! What's the best book you've read this month? :D

So GLAD I found this! I’m 72 and have always been an avid reader. So NICE to know young folks haven’t forgotten the power of story! I love the classics: Austen; the Brontes; Dickens ( has more meaning when you know they are VERY MUCH social commentaries!) THE AGE OF INNOCENCE, WASHINGTON SQUARE, SILAS MARNER, O PIONEER, LES MISERABLES, WAR AND PEACE... more favs. BUT... so are ONION GIRL, STONES FROM THE RIVER, THE 39 STEPS, anything by Pat Conroy! 🌹

Actually in the Arrival film, her daughter does grow up. She gets cancer as a teen and dies in her early 20s. They just focus on a lot of her childhood days because of course, it's more affecting. I felt like first half of The Power raised some really interesting ideas but the second half abandons a lot of the better ideas but I still think it's a thought-provoking read.
@BookswithEmilyFox6 жыл бұрын
Really? I just rewatched it and still didn't interpret it that way :/ My point still stands though lol
@KW-vy1rf6 жыл бұрын
BookswithEmilyFox to be fair, I've only seen the movie once but I seem to recall in the sequence at the very start of the movie as her daughter is born, grows up and dies, there's a scene of them arguing when the daughter is a teen and you also see her at the hospital with her when she's diagnosed as a teen. But I understand your point all the same.

Sleepy Emily is adorable (and I mean that in the most non-patronizing way). I am super amazed that you got through that many books in a month (and a warmer month to boot) I typically get the most reading done in the winter months when it's too cold to do anything outside and even then the most I've managed (now as an adult) is about 14 books. Way to go, Emily.

I read Red Clocks and really enjoyed it! It starts looking like disconected parts, but they all start intervening with each other after a while to paint a portrait of the woman seen for her role as a mother. It's literary fiction, more focused on feelings and ideas than plot, but I'd still give it a second chance if you're ever in the mood for something of the sort (:

Yes! I agree with you about Strange the Dreamer. The build up was good and I was into it...then the romance happened. 😐 I would've been ok with it as a small side dish, but somehow the instalove became the main entree. Wasn't here for it. Giving the second one a try, but it'll be on a short leash.

I can totally understand that thought about the Glass Castle. I had to read that book for school, and I actually liked it but we also had time to talk through the events in class and share our thoughts on the parents. Hearing how the parents took care of the children would really ruin my days and my experience with the book tbh. Btw love your videos!

Emily I was wondering if you can do a video on reading books in language that is not your first language, cause I would like to try reading in English but I am not sure that I will be able to do that property. I really love your videos!
@ninac.59216 жыл бұрын
Hey! When I started reading in English I just started and didn't overthink it. The words I didn't understand I translated online (that's still what I am doing because there is no chance that you know every word of a foreign language). At the beginning of a book I remember I always struggled to get into the flow but after a few pages you get used to it an get much better :) Most of the time when I didn't understand whole phrases it was because of phrasal verbs, collocations or idiomatic expressions.. so you have to translate the whole bundle to understand those not only word by word because if you do that you won't really understand the real context. Another tip is to start with children's books, work your way up do teenage novel then YA and so on. I hope that helps a little

I also recommend to sometimes just keep going if you don't understand right away. Many things will just clear up on their own and even if you don't look up many words, you will make a lot of progress in quite a short time! If you are into classics, you can always start with easier versions, I think Penguin has easy versions of classics in their catalogue somewhere, or just try and stick with YA for the beginning. You will do great!
@thislullaby1436 жыл бұрын
So in Arrival, the reason they changed the age of the character Hannah is because they didn’t want to give away everything in the beginning. If they went with the age in the book they would need to make Louise look older in the flash forwards which would take away the impact, of finding out she’s seeing the future and now thinks and experiences things like the aliens, that you get in the end. They talk about it more with the screenwriter in the podcast the Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith.

I read The Power too this month and I definitely agree that the idea behind it was good but I just didn't always like the execution that much. There were some interesting scenes in here and toward the end it kinda picked up the pace a bit, but overall I didn't find it that compelling for the most part. Also, some events in this didn't seem very probable to me. But I really liked the ending, it made me like the book a lot more and made me glad that I read it. Also: I loved Roxy! I read Sometimes I Lie a couple of months ago and I totally agree! I liked it until about 75% of the way through but by the end, I just ended up totally confused and didn't know what was going on because there were so many twists. I read 12 books this month, which surprised me since I had so many group projects and finals. My favorite book that I read this month are "The Summer of the Monkeys" by Wilson Rawls. I'm so sad that he only wrote 2 books! He and his wife were the perfect partnership; she edited his wonderful stories since she had more education than he did. He always gave her credit because he knew without her he wouldn't have been successful. It's so sweet especially for the time period they lived in when women couldn't do hardly anything.

I have to disagree with you about the reason the director of arrival changed the age of the daughter. It was deliberate but nothing to do with bringing teras. If they put her daughter to die the same age has the story in the book, they would have to age the actress Amy Adams and that would give away the twist. People would know right away that the scenes with that daughter would pass in the future. Making the daughter die younger, keep the audience guessing that that events happen before and not after. I'm sorry so long explanation but i really liked the movie and saw some extra information given about the making of it.

I read all three of Gillian Flynn's books (I believe she only wrote the three). Both Sharp Objects and Dark Places are intriguing books with interesting characters and I liked them both a lot, but Gone Girl (which is the first of the three I've read) is the best one in my opinion. Sharp Objects is her earliest one and Gone Girl is her latest and I actually can kind of tell her writing getting better and better. I think that especially because you loved the movie that you will definitely love the book, it's honestly one of my favourites! Also, if you're looking for recommendations, anything from Neil Gaiman. I love especially American Gods.

I felt the same thing about RedClocks although i did finish it. Yes a snippet of life. There were some interestings musings but i was so let down because i expected it to be a big dramatic dystopian book with much more sinister stories and plots. It was depressing and odd, i gave it a 3. As for Thunderhead, im finishing up Scythe and i love love loved it. Loveee the premise and where the author takes it, love the characters and the utopian to dystopian realization, the themes of good vs evil, the scifi aspects of thunderhead, just LOVE IT. I already have Thunderhead on my shelf and its my very next read on my TBR. Question - are you reading An ember in the Ashes series? I read an excerpt online of the beginning and i just kneww id love it sp those are also on my TBR for March and im excited to get the newly released 3rd one later this month i believe it comes out. Barely anything makes sense, I don't really care about the characters and the memory loss setup is frustrating the shit out of me :/ At this point all I can hold out for is a decent ending, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
