After FINALLY reading Les Misérables by Victor Hugo, I no longer allow myself to be intimidated by books based on their size - they definitely can be daunting but I'm like "NO. YOU READ LES MIS. YOU CAN READ THIS" hahah

OMG I tried the audio book. About two hours of backstory for the man Valjean steals the candlesticks from, the one who convinces him to turn his life around. Yikes! It's like 2 minutes in the musical. Haha! I think I stopped shortly after Fantine dies and Valjean takes Cosette away. Go you!

Hi Emily! I'm currently reading The Inheritance Trilogy, and oh man, it's long! It's not The Fifth Season for sure, and I'm really enjoying it, but I've been reading it for at least 2 months and I'm starting the third book. Also, a side note I loved The Fifth Season. I recommend you start with The Inheritance Trilogy; you'll be disappointed if you do it the other way around. Her writing has improved much since she wrote The Inheritance Trilogy and you can really tell.

I also have Love and Peace on my TBR and it is soooooo intimidating! I will try to read it in summer. I also have to read This Savage Song and I heard so many good things about it. One of my goals is to read the 6th book in the Mortal Instruments series but I hated the rest of them so I'm really not in the mood. I read Golden Son and really liked it, so I hope you'll enjoy it too. Anyway, I hope you will manage to read all of your TBR books. Good luck 🌸

I'm also trying to read more big books this year. I always tend to love the bigger books I read but they are so intimidating! What if you spend all that time reading it and then don't like it! Also they usually have a lot of hype which maked them even more terrifying. Plus I know it means I probably won't get round to reading as many of the smaller books that I am equally excited about. Plus it feels great when you read lots in a month. 💪🏻 Went out and bought The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle yesterday after you raved about it. It's not usually a premise I'd gravitate towards but I bit the bullet. You convinced me. Planning on getting to it this week. I hope I love it as much as you did 🤞

Oh my, I'm also super intimidated by War & Peace!! I put it in my TBR for this year, in my 12 books to read. I try to read one of the biggest books in my TBR each year; in 2017, it was Les Misérables by Victor Hugo (such a great book, worth the time spent on it really!) After reading this chunk, I try to convince myself I can read anything but, well, I'm still scared x)

I can so relate to having lots of books to be read. I love big books especially if the story is one that I can really get into but I'm also intimidated because they can take so long to get through and I have hundreds of books I own that need my attention. Some big books on my TBR include Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell, the last two books of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander Series, Pillars of the Earth, Malzan Series by Steven Erikson (my boyfriend enjoyed the series so much he bought me the first four books as a birthday present, The Legend of Drizzt Book 1 that has three books in one by R.A. Salvatore, The Dragonlance Chronicles which includes three books in one by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, Victoria The Queen by Julia Baird,, Eon by Alison Goodman, The Aeronaut's Windlass by Jim Butcher, The Complete Arrows Trology by Mercedes Lacky, The Mists of Avalon series by Marion Zimmer Bradley (read about half of them by the time I was in high school and loved them but it's been so long that it will be pretty much like to reading them for the first time), The Princes of Ireland by Edward Rutherfurd, Catherine The Great by Robert K. Massie and Kate Morton's books. There's probably more hiding in the back of my shelves lol.

Ive been reading cassandra clares books for the first time this summer as a 21 year old. I do think the infernal devices is better inits cool steampunk-feel victorian setting and the villain is more interesting, but it has a love triangle which killed possibilities of a high rating for me. For me the big intimidating book is house of leaves. My boyfriend loved it and I know I'll find it fascinating but i mean, come on. It'll take me a month or more to read.

The Emperor of all Maladies is a difficult read. I'm in the medical profession and it was pretty dry. I recently finished Anna Karenina and feel so proud of myself as it’s a huge book. I’m hoping to use this as inspiration to read “Swan Song” and “The Brothers Karamanov,” which are also huge books. The books I’m the MOST intimated by has to be any George R. R. Martin books. I swear I get palpitations when I think of reading his series.

for me, an intimidating book is lord of the rings, it has been sitting on my shelves for almost five years now and I still haven't read it! It's just that it's so huge and one time I tried to read it but I was kinda confused. that was years ago though so I hope that I will enjoy it more now that I'm older and I've read more fantasy books than before. also, I personally loved the infernal devices more than the mortal instruments series, I think the characters are better and the overall vibe of the story is so mysterious and interesting

War and peace, scares me so much! 😳 I want to read it and love it, but wow what a commitment lol. I’m also intimidated by The lightbringer series (I think that’s what it’s called) by Brent Weeks. Partly because of reviews I have seen for it and partly because every book is HUGE! It’s been on my TBR for awhile. I did read the first book in the Night Angle series by him and while I did see some issues with it overall I enjoyed most of it. I found it a little hard to follow at times because it skipped large chunks of time here and there and some of the characters were difficult for me to keep separate in my head (if that makes sense).

Twenty Yon Océane I'm almost finished with it and I don't know. It hasn't made me feel much, I'm not connecting with Darrow. The story is entertaining enough to finish but I'm questioning continuing the series. According to boyfriend, the second book does get better. I just hope he's not setting me up for more disappointment. :p

I stopped reading a lot of older sci-fi because I got so tired of the sexism, and I HATE when people are like "oh but it was a different time" and all those excuses, I don't care what time it was written, it still makes me uncomfortable/angry reading it!!

The best part is when you mentioned that plenty of other books written during the same time weren't sexist or at least not nearly as bad. It's too easy to use these excuses :/ Just because it's been considered a classic doesn't mean it still should be... sure some books show how it used to be... but to often it's gratuitous!

Nah, I wouldn't call it limiting myself when I have read plenty of it in the last 10 years. Ive come to the conclusion that I don't like books that are sexists for no good reason, so I would rather pick up a book I know I will enjoy. Like Emily says in the comment above there are plenty of books that are considered classics that aren't sexists, so I would rather spend my time on them :) That would be my friendly advice, if you dont like the book, put it down and pick up another

Being bothered by sexism is anything but a petty thing. It also has nothing to do with "needing ticker skin"!

I know you've probably heard it a million times, but if you want to read something by Cassandra Clare read the Infernal devices. Just skip the other Mortal instruments novels, ignore them. And start the infernal devices, they're way more fun. Mostly because Victorian London, but the characters are a lot more fun as well.

I’m totally intimidated by the second and the third book of peter v. Brett‘s demon cycle. The German versions have 1000 pages each. I loved the first one, but I know it will take a while to read no. 2 and 3.

Nicole Yvonne hi, I just wanted to note that it just looks intimidating because in original version it has just +200 pages and believe me it is not enough, more so if you are short on sequals :)

I didn’t really love This Savage Song! :( I was disappointed, especially since I loved A Darker Shade of Magic. I also need to read the 3rd Mortal Instruments book and I’m not really in a hurry to get to it over my other options..

MissKylie07 the 3rd book is my absolute favourite in that series! The world building is so captivating! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did when you finally get to it x

My library charges quite a lot to reserve books, it would be cheaper for me to just buy them secondhand. It's such a shame as they have a good list of new books, but they're all out and there's a wait list.

The husband's secret is actually set in Australia's fall time so I'm not sure about the summer mood, but I thought it was good. I really enjoyed The last anniversary, which seems to be her less popular book. XD

The Luminaries, Jerusalem by Simon Sebag, the rise and fall of the Egyptian empire, Brothers Karamazov, My name is Red, ugh ..... The list is so long. I'm currently just reading fantasy fic so I can get back into reading. I read the first two from the Storm light Archive and I'm now a Sanderson fan. I literally read with bated breath a scene in The Way of Kings where I thought there would be a gratuitous description of the female body.......and it never came. I was pleasantly shocked.

Whenever guys argue with me that sexism is simply part of fantasy/sci fi and that's what every popular author does... Sanderson comes to the rescue! His books simply aren't full of sex and sexism and he has no issues selling them!

Crooked Kingdom is much better than Six of Crows. There's a lot more action and character exploration! Also I think you'll really love Sometimes I lie; it's full of twists and turns

I've tried reading war and peace for the longest time... Like since my high school teacher had a saga-like review on it but I cannot move in book if I cannot understand some of its parts and as we know nobility had a pretty annoying habbit of speaking french and I do not get it. I did not find any version fully translated so not a thing for me.. But surely you will enjoy this part :)

Okay so I bought the red rising trilogy because of the hype, first one was good, I enjoyed it, second was meh, and third I can’t get through because it’s so predictable. Thinking about DNFing but I’m taking a break for now and then come back to it maybe 😣
