Yes, that why I was so mad Dawn team was awful. She only got 2 good pokemon: Mamoswine and togakiss (which she didn;t even train up). I was really piss Piplup didn't evole cuz they wanna keep it cute liek WTF Emploean would have been amazing. All her pokemon I feel are meant to just be cute while May was meant to win COntest. She one of the few female trainer not crazy about cute pokemon and acturally train up her strongest pokemon- blazerkein from baby level. Iris was just handed a dragonite and almost all her strong pokemon. You didn;t really see her battle and train any of her pokemon up like May.

My favorite part of May’s journey was the movie Pokemon Ranger And The Temple Of The Sea! That and Lucario And The Mystery Of Mew were some of my favorite memories growing up! I still remember when they first aired on tv and watching them! But her relationship with Manaphy was so special and I wish she could have kept it with her for the rest of her journey.

@@Alicorn_Fox He literally just made a whole video showing the good parts of May's era, let alone all her other episodes not covered by this. Besides that AG was good because Ash developed as a trainer, evolved his pokemon, the battles improved over Kanto/Johto and the humor was good. May became more popular than Misty with the original fans 20 years ago and the Contests became the most popular addition to the series, it's why the writers made Misty's departure permanent and paved the way for all female leads after. We also finally got character development back in the show.

It's so nice you made a video of May the Best and the Beautiest Pokégirl Pokémon Cordinator ever in Pokémon! I remember when I've watched Pokémon Advanced Adventures, Challenge, Battle, Battle Frontier and Battle Dimension the Wallace Cup Seasons and episodes where May was, defienitily I loved the Original Advanced Seasons with May's Original design and voice, I like both May's designs red clothing and orange green designs, and both voices in english voice and my favourite finnish voice Aksa Korttila my favourite finnish actor, I really like her voice and the Reason I have the Same Birthday with Aksa Korttila May's voice actor. May's voice was just too diffrent in the Wallace Cup episodes, but loved to see her return and reaction of the New Motto of Team Rocket, but didin't liked they stole their foods, it's not the Best Idea to steal May's food... All Pokémon movies where is May are my favourite, Jirachi, Deoxis, Manaphy and the Temple of the Sea and Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, defienitily Manaphy and the Temple of the Sea and Lucario and the Mystery of Mew are my favourite Pokémon movies. It was so nice May saw the most Pokégirls in Pokémon anime like Misty, Dawn and even Serena, but I was sad we didin't hear May's voice in Pokémon Ultimate Journey episodes. I miss old good times with the Original Pokémon Seasons with Ash and Pikachu's Journey of a freaking 25 years and my whole life 21 years of Pokémon anime, I miss Ash, but more I miss characters like Team Rocket and defienitily May, I hope Ash and he's friends will return to Pokémon anime someday as an adult what I've heard. May is one of my favorite characters in the anime. I loved her contest rivals, especially Drew (Her own version of Gary). Plus, her Blaziken is still my favorite Companion Pokémon of All-time. How he went from a scared Torchic, who could barely battle, to a contest battling Ace in a Combusken and Blaziken, who would go on to wits with many heavyweights including Ash's "Darkrai Slayer". I give him so much respect, as well as the writers. He was the first Companion Pokémon to get a full-fledged arc and personality... And it worked out great. Shame we never got a reunion of those two aces... Speaking of Sceptile, can you do his history next? Or Ash's Bayleef?

Unfortunately we will probably never see May ever again. There was a reason she never interacted with Ash in Journeys like his other companions did. Her japanese voice actor got a disease that messed up her voice which prevented her from voice acting. The Pokémon company did not want to disrespect her by replacing her so they prevented May and Max from having any dialogue.

It also needs to be said what a vast improvement May was over Misty at the time (especially johto Misty). We literally went from a female character who was, sadly, during Johto treated mostly as a background character aside from the handful of eps focused on her, only captured 1 new pokemon (Corsola) a whole saga, and lost a lot of her chemistry/temper to May who was basically one of the most focused on female leads of the series. Looking back it's hard to believe there was ever a time when Misty leaving was considering controversial. Misty literally had no role in the series anymore and May immediately became more popular with a better role, character arc, personality, battles, everything really. And of course Dawn and many of the others followed this as well. I feel bad for Misty fans, she deserved better.

To be quite honest, looking back at the anime I don't think May as a character is as great as everyone thinks she is. Because for me I look and think back to all her contest battles and I can't really think of one I liked outside of the one where she beat Drew. Because almost all of May's wins were through sheer convenience and DEM. The worst offenders being her battle against Brock's Marshtomp, Phantom's Dusclops, and against Harley's Ariados. Even her first win in Fallarbor Town was WAY to convenient for her and expected us to buy heaps of logic for her winning the fight. This is why I can't see her as the "second strongest companion" I'd put it to Misty post Johto (especially by SM/Journeys) or Dawn. They would even cut out May’s contests to focus on Ash training Swellow or Snorunt evolving to Glalie rather than focusing on her battles. May relied on dumb luck or random boosts she had no real control over. May had an effort to give her an arc but as mentioned her contests tended to not be very well developed, and she also relied on spamming or plot armour a lot of the time over well-choreographed battles. I also found her constantly falling for Harley's tricks annoying, and obviously that she'd keep doing it after like the first or second time. AG wasn't super terrific either with supporting roles, she had a good bond with Ash at times but otherwise tended to fade into the background (sidelined with Brock and Max) unless it was a focus episode for her. The biggest exception seemed to be her high tendency to get kidnapped or put in peril. Even the Manaphy movie, which felt like her limelight movie, ended up with Ash saving her and May failing to have much actual agency. Going from this to establishing Dawn's contests correctly right at the start of DP really was Tomioka making sure to do things right next time. I will admit, even though I don't like shipping nor care about it (which is why I find basing characters around it frivolous, at least to me) I do like her moments with Drew and her 4-episode Sinnoh appearance was good. Not only that, May's Pokémon tended not to get much screentime outside of their specific contest battles or the eps leading up to them almost similar to the way Journies handled Ash's Pokémon. Beautifly barely appeared in mid/late Hoenn for example. Skitty was used for a bit then got overshadowed by her Bulbasaur, and then all 3 of her Hoenn pokemon were dropped after Hoenn ended. Munchlax didn't do much till the middle of BF despite being captured before the Hoenn Grand Festival and Eevee hardly did anything of note outside the one contest it had against Brock. And of course, Torchic was barely used for the first 80 episodes of Hoenn till it evolved. I don't mean to dunk on May, love her design a lot and she does have some good moments, I just don't think a lot of things about her work looking back. ESPECIALLY her battles and how I think they translate poorly with her development. She's behind Dawn, Misty for me, probably tied with Iris (though I might like Iris a bit more)

A lot of this video only focused on May's contests but not things she did outside of them, otherwise the video would be far too long. Luap only covered the key points of her journey, but not her capture episodes, battles with trainers, or her notable eps and tag battles. He doesn't even mention the Swablu ep or the time travel ep with Meowth, or the eps she rivals with Jessie over Wurmple, her tag battles with Ash, so this is not a comprehensive list. I wouldn't say she faded into the background often, she was still kept fairly active with things to do and Brock and Max barely did anything in AG in comparison. Also you have to remember May only had a team of 4 in each series she was in, so Beautifly/Bulbasaur/Skitty were only for the Hoenn portion and then Munchlax/Squirtle/Eevee for the Battle Frontier, with only Combusken being her main pokemon kept across both. She does have a few battles that could have been handled better as you mentioned, but given it was the first time the writers tried to give a companion their own goal people are more forgiving of it. It's not like all of Dawn's contests wins were handled well either (her final win against Ursula for her 5th ribbon had her Mamoswine take a dozen shadowballs and Dawn's points never decreased, etc), so I take that with an oversight of the animators and script not being as accurate as it could be. Also another correction, they never cut out May's contest battles for Ash. The two you mentioned (Ash training Swellow and Glalie), they showed her main battles in those contests in full. The only one that was cut short was the Solidad battle, given it was just meant to be a quick loss for May to lose, I can see why they did it. May still has more on-screen battles shown of any female companion besides Dawn, so she fared a lot better than all the other female leads in that regard.

@@LuapXD Yeah, May actually gets a ton of eps outside of Contests too, other than Dawn, she was the second most active female character of the series. As well as fun episodes like the Wurmple ep switching with Jessie's, the tag battle episode with Ash, the fighting dojo ep in Battle Frontier where she used Hitmonchan, the whole Bulbasaur arc in mid-Hoenn with Ash's, she battles Wattson's assistant in Mauville Gym, the Swablu ep, time travel ep in BF, the eps where Drew appears outside a contest, or the various Munchlax and Skitty related episodes she got. I think it also helped that a lot of May's contests were also 2-parters, or have introductory eps to May's opponents. If May got Dawn's level of screentime she would have been perfect. XD

Just started rewatching this season of pokemon with my son and between me and my partner, we cannot remember why people liked May so much considering she's dumber than patrick, doesn't like POKEMON, not afraid of them, just doesn't like them. Too thirsty for Ash to care about ANYTHING else going on, barely remembers she even HAS a Pokemon from time to time, and is SOMEHOW also hungrier than Ash. She whines almost every episode about how they need to take a break, even if they just took one.

Are you watching a completely different show than everyone else? Since when was May thirsty for Ash? You sound like you're talking about Serena. Also May isn't "dumb," she's inexperienced with Pokemon at the start for obvious reasons that she had no interest in them, and then she learns and develops as the series goes on. Half the other things you're mentioning could apply to any other female companion, Misty spent most of Season 1 whining they got lost in the forest or had no food to eat regularly for awhile, so why are you signaling out May for this? Like Misty was literally known for throwing tantrums about things at the beginning of her run in the show. And again, most of the things you're talking about stop after the early portions of Hoenn, you need to learn what character development is.

Cool that you and your family are watching together, hope you're having fun! :D Looooong defense essay coming up (I remained pretty respectful, so no hate towards you, just confused on some of your points!) I understand you probably won't read this, and that's okay, but it was fun to write anyway! ^^ 2. While I respect your opinion and it's fine to dislike her, a lot of the points you made are wrong and I can counter each one of them. 1. While the original trio is classic and understandably loved, and it is sad to see Misty leave, May and the Advanced Generation series in general were a major refreshment. However many Misty fans dislike May for the sole reason that Misty wasn't a main character any more, not even bothering to watch the show and see how it turned out. If you're sad about Misty leaving, I completely get it! (And if that's not it, that's okay too, she's new, just give her a chance though) Misty's lovable and always made snappy replies where they were due and even matured throughout the journey! But that's no reason to dislike May. The reason May gained quite a bit of popularity despite that, however, is because she was the FIRST deuteragonist of the entire show. She had her own story and arc and development in it. She also was the first to introduce us to Contests, and is also well liked for her strong team and unique and fun personality. 2. Now, May IS known for being slightly ditzy, but the major part you may be confusing it for is that she is NEW. Not necessarily "dumb". Pokémon wasn't a thing she was interested in before this, and all of this is new for her since she's only just starting out. Her reason to become a trainer is for her passion to travel, and we even get a fun character quirk from it where she makes a camera lens with her fingers and pretends that she's in an exploration television show, which adds even more to her fun personality! In any case, because she at first only wanted to do it for travel, she likely didn't study up a lot on Pokémon since.. Well, that wasn't something she was interested in! So she wasn't exactly the most prepared to suddenly be pushed into a group of other travellers whose lives absolutely REVOLVE around Pokémon. Whenever she makes a comment you might think is "stupid", tell me a time it isn't Pokémon related. She makes a lot of smart decisions through the series, but in any case she thinks a lot more with her heart then her brain, which I think is sweet and can be a good quality to have- it's the same with Ash! If your tired of May's "stupidness", I can't imagine your hatred towards Ash. (Not meant to be offensive! But, well, y'know the boy..) Max tries to "highlight" when she, Ash, or anyone else messes up, so naturally when she does something a bit silly, he might make a comment, which might be another reason you think she's "dumb"? But this is what a lot of siblings do! Although they're close, he likes to tease her, and since he's a huge Pokémon fanboy nerd and loves to be a know-it-all, he'll do it at all times when possible! Sure, she's slow in a few small cases (which are ALL meant to be comedical, just like whenever Ash was, might I add), but dumber than Patrick? No way. Definitely make sure to watch how her character grows! (LET'S ALSO REMEMBER THAT THIS IS A KIDS SHOW, WHERE THE MAIN CAST ARE KIDS, NOT EVERYTHING THEY SAY WILL BE SMART- JUST LOOK AT THE WHOLE CAST, NO MATTER WHAT SEASON, FAILING RO RECOGNIZE TEAM ROCKET EVERY TIME!) 2. Her not liking Pokémon actually stems from that exact thing... So, uh.. She's shown to be scared of quite a few Pokémon, and acts timid at first when meeting them (Episode 4, "You Never Can Tailow!" for just one example.) It's not a PURE HATRED thing for her at all. She says she dislikes them, but we don't see her beating up her very own Psyduck just for existing, now do we?- Oh, wait that's Misty. (DON'T GET ME WRONG I LOVE MISTY, IT'S JUST ONE OF HER FEW NEGATIVE TRAITS) Truthfully, I think she just says she dislikes them, but doesn't mean it that way. She is just uninterested at first in them and very unsure of what to do with her life. Her dad was a gym leader and everybody and everything around her was Pokémon this, Pokémon that, but since she never had a friendship with any yet and had no exact goal but to travel, she just kinda seemed to assume "I suppose I just don't like them.." We never see her show hatred towards any Pokémon- anger yes, a few times, but very rarely (like twice?) and we see her feel bad and regretful right after, the episode often teaching a lesson in the process. The reason she "dislikes" (if we can even call it that-) them most likely (not quite sure if it was confirmed?) was a kinda traumatic event from her childhood when she was very little and swimming alone, and was suddenly surrounded by a bunch of Tentacool, and when she was scared and tried to call for her parents, her parents didn't hear she was calling for help and instead mistook her from a Pokémon among the Tentacool as she was wearing a blue swim cap. And her mom tried to catch her. (Played off for laughs admittedly, and it could definitely be a better story, but it was kinda funny in any case- and in retrospect, imagine having fun swimming in real life when you were like four and then a bunch of giant squids (who are known for having very bad tempers and have very powerful water attacks mind you) and then there's even more and then to top it all off your parents are like "TIME TO THROW A BALL AT THIS SQUIDS HEAD!" and then that squid was you.) We see her nervousness around Pokémon not much at all even, and it dies out quickly after the first few episodes. At almost all times, we see her treating her Pokémon very well and that she cares deeply for each one. She even tells THEM that she loves them. Multiple times. She even later cares for a wild Pokémon and dedicates perhaps a week or more just to take care of it, putting it as her first priority and caring more for IT'S health than her own. Doesn't matter that it's a Pokémon. Doesn't matter that it's not hers. What matters is that it's hurt. It's a very sweet episode and shows just how much she has grown. Definitely recommend to watch it (True Blue Swablu). We also see her help other Pokémon (Wild, other people's, and her own with the team) but this one is the most notable seeing how dedicated she was. She also catches a Munchlax later just because people believe it to be guilty, but she wants to prove that it was innocent! (Which it was! And it's pretty funny. But shows she has a lot of heart again.) In any case, I also think it's something that makes her unique- everyone else is Poké-crazy and that's what a lot of other characters lives completely REVOLVE around- but she's just not too interested in it. Is that really SUCH a crime? I mean, sure, it's kinda like disliking animals?? (Except Pokémon are a HUGE part of their society) But it's just she's not too crazy about them like EVERY other character. I find it a really interesting part of her story, and I honestly wish that we had more of a slow development from disliking to liking, but she so quickly falls in love with Pokémon, I don't know what you're angry about? 3. Okay- now we are getting where you either are trolling or you're just throwing your anger at a character and believing that she is?? I don't even know. I'm not sure what Advanced series you're watching, but uh.. it isn't mine. Just because she's a girl and he's a boy DOES NOT mean they are in love. She has an adoration for his skills and knowledge as a Pokémon trainer, and Ash gets to enjoy this by teaching her and becoming a kind of mentor towards her, which is quite different from past series and fun to watch (especially since you often see him with a silly prideful smirk when trying to teach her since he finally has someone HE can teach rather than teaching him- it's not rude, he's just happy to and it keeps up his ego!) May admires Ash as a best friend (and he does too!) and mentor, and they have a few sweet moments of their friendship.Totally not against Advance shipping if you're into that kinda stuff, that's chill, but.. Sorry, the way you said it sounded very immature and inaccurate. (I'm curious as to where you got this idea?) The closest May has got to actually having ANYTHING close to a crush is when she compliments them (which she does very platonically, I don't think it's EVER not with her-). Also, when she blushes (which has happened when people have complimented her- one boy and another named Drew have done so, and it's been teased at that it's romantic, but never truly confirmed.) Drew and her have both had a fair share of scenes which could be interpreted "romantically", but eh, take it how you will. But she never is frickin.. that.. (Your words) for anyone? Like what? This is a kids show? She's innocent? And she usually cares very much for the people around her, as well as what's going on. All in all, I'm not much of a shipper, but you're of course free to, just.. don't be weird about it. 4. Barely remembering she has Pokémon? This show is called Pokémon. That's.. that's 99% of what we'll be seeing throughout the show. The one time Max assumed she "forgot" about Torchic, she didn't, she was just focused for her first Contest, which is very understandable! And she showed lots of love to her Pokémon before, during, and afterwards. She... She never FORGETS she HAS Pokémon.. She'd probably end up as a much more minor character if the writers made THAT big of a mistake.

5. One thing I heavily dislike is when people cut her character down to just.. that. It happens a surprising amount. Yes, she enjoys food. Yes, she likes to try lots of foods when they're offered but.. people narrow her character down to just that and it's sad. It's a much more minor thing to her character but many act like it's very major. Heck, even this guy from the video went as far to call it a "food addiction" which really baffles me. She gets upset or sad when people steal her food or when she isn't allowed to have it for long periods of time, sure (understandably so!). When we see her eating, she's eating a normal amount with everyone else, and doesn't act any differently then any of the others while eating. The only times when we really see her love for food is when 1. It's being stolen/unavailable for a long time, as mentioned before (where everyone is disappointed), but really I think she acts the most dramatically is more of since she's a very emotional character rather than any "food obsession". The 2. time we see May's love for food is when it's more special and particularly good (ex. Cookies from DP from being in the huge Wallace Cup event, the noodles from Pasta La Vista where the cook was known to be especially good). But yes, I think she likes food a little more than most of Ash's companions but it's not a HUGE amount more, and we don't see it much, until much later in like.. late season 8, and season 9... But even then it's not displayed too much, so it's really sad when people boil her character down to pretty much just that.. As for liking it MORE than Ash? It's been confirmed in canon that she doesn't, more or less, said by Brock the Master Chef himself! 6. She's an emotional character, so she gets sad, angry and happy pretty easily. She asks for a break about four times in total throughout all those 150+ episodes, which is not a lot at all.. Also given they're on their feet 24/7, it's pretty fair. I get how it might annoy you, you wanna move on, tell her to stop slowing the group down. But as this isn't a very regular thing at all, I'd hope it wouldn't bother you too much. As for her in GENERAL being whiney? I actually kinda agree with this one. She does get sad very easily, but the thing is she doesn't yell at people about it 99% of the time (*cough* Misty, Iris, Ash.. Again, not hating on them, it's just often how THEY cope), or put her problems on other people- she's usually quite the opposite. A lot of the time she kinda just either comedically is sad about something (probably will make a comment about herself being sad, but she's not like "ASH, FIX THIS!" or anything- she's just like, "WHY DOES THIS STUFF HAPPEN TO US (TnT)"), and when she's sad SERIOUSLY it's actually one of my favorite things about her character since a lot of times she's pretty mature about it. (Ex. 1. Ash yelled at her, but despite that she decided to move on and try to go find him the dock/boat he was looking for, instead of yelling back at him or anything. 2. The group got split up, Ash and her, and Max and Brock. They finally found the dock that SHE was looking for in this episode, but instead of going (the boat was literally leaving just then) she decided to stay, despite that meaning she'd miss that contest, meaning she'd miss the Grand Festival, meaning she'd have to start all over again for the NEXT Grand Festival. She did that because Max wasn't there, and she had made a promise to her mom to watch over him and she kept it, despite what that meant for her, saying "There are more important things than what I want." Because she cares about him. So what does she do after saying that? She cries silently for like 2 SECONDS, quickly then wipes her tears as Ash is looking, and tells him that they should go find Brock and Max, and tells him the bright side of what happened that day instead. And what does she do when they find Max again? Does she slap him? Yell at him? Blame him for being the reason she missed the boat and has to start all over again? Nope. She hugs him and tells him she was worried about him. She puts other people before her, and hopes to see the best in others (even if they are people who absolutely HATE her, like Harley, who tries to sabotage her performances. She gives him multiple chances, wanting to believe that he changed, until she FINALLY runs out of trust and stops believing his lies.). She doesn't care about the Grand Festival as much as she cares about her brother. ANOTHER time she acted maturely when sad was when she had pushed Bulbasaur a bit too hard on its first Contest (Which WAS a bad look on her) and she lost. This might not be the best example at all.. but after the Contest she sat alone just petting Bulbasaur by herself, until Ash came up asking if she was okay and she told Ash calmly but sadly that she acted like a fool, and just really regretted what she did and that she was sorry to Bulbasaur. In the next Contest, she tells everyone she'll never take her Pokémon for granted again, and that it was all thanks to them that she earned each ribbon (the prize for Contests).) Overall, she's a pretty mature character for the most part, and when she IS whiney, it's meant for comedy reasons. If that's not your style, that's okay! I get you might get annoyed by that. But what you said was "she whines almost every episode about how they need to take a break, even if they just had one", which just isn't true as she barely does this, especially SPECIFICALLY this. All in all, it's fine if you dislike May, but some of your reasons were just harsh and inaccurate to the point I'm not quite sure if you are joking. She definitely learns a lot through time, and becomes determined and more confident in herself! And VERY quickly loves Pokémon. She's very sweet to everyone, and, more than being sad, is usually in a bright and happy mood! All in all I really find her silly, energetic and dorky personality fun. Overall, Advanced is my absolute favorite, and May is my favorite character, so.. that concluded, that's all for now! I love this retrospective of May, she's my favorite of Ash's traveling companions.. even just her design in general. She has a sassiness to her like Misty, Dawn, and Iris, but she balances it by being sweeter than them most of the time. She's so pleasant. I would say her character development is quite strong, yeah, considering where she started out at. She changed a lot as a person. Plus having the Blaziken line instantly sky uppercutted her up even more for me. Canonically owning a Blaziken is super rare.. And Harley.. Boy, that Harley. He's all about the gimmicks and shenanigans. He's like a pro wrestling heel. You want to see somebody kick his ass, very similar to a Paul, but on the girl's side of antagonists. Very interesting character to watch though, one of my favorites.
