Maya 2017 - Exterior Lighting in Arnold

I'll be explaining three techniques to light an exterior scene. Covering HDRI Lighting, Physical sky shaders and custom lighting. Along side some Arnold techques for adding camera effects to your renders.

Very nice tutorial on basic lighting technics. Would you mind taking a look at some night time exterior lighting in one of your next tutorials? There's a lot of things from this tutorial that apply on night lighting, but still, it's kind of hard to find a good tutorial online (even on platforms you have to pay for them). I've just discovered your tutorials... they've been a HUGE help! It's so great to have certain aspects of Maya/Arnold demystified. Thanks a million for the efforts you're putting in! I notice with this tutorial that you didn't un-check the 'opaque' settings, or play with SSS etc. for the water in this scene (unlike the previous bottle/wine materials). Was there a reason for that?

The horizon is determined by the vertical position of your camera, just like in real life.

Hi, So I loaded the scene into Maya 2018 and when open the ground poly is corrupted? It looks as if someone had two layers of geometry overlapping and several polys are missing. If I select the face of the object and move it, the entire ground is a mess. Could you upload a 2018 version? Most of what you discuss applies in 2018 but the scene file seems to have some legacy issues in 2018.

If you've used an arnold skydome light with an HRD image, you can turn the background off by lowering the camera visibility slider in the light's attribute pannel. If memory servers me well.

@@Mbg-tech sometimes obj files (idk what file type this is) come with normals reversed, causing the models to appear black, you could look into that and see if thats the case in this floor plane

When I load the file the background doesn't load all the way is there a way to possibly fix this?

If the issue is in the viewport, try adjusting the camera clipping plane. You can select the camera and then in the attribute editor find the clipping plane settings and increase the value of the far clipping plane.

you can turn off the sound and make speed x2 faster in the settings. for sleepy problem, wash your face frequently and drink cofee.
