In this video tutorial, we will go over how to create exterior lighting using Physical Sky in Arnold for Maya. Physical Sky is an excellent Arnold light that can be used to create quick lighting set up for your exterior environments or just make your models look great.
You can even make a time lapse with it! Let's check it out.

I've seen a lot maya tutorials channels (with lot of subscribers) who probably start teaching by ignoring the very basic elements' properties. But here this channel has taught me so much (not for the 1st time) from the scratch that I was unable to learn probably I'm not smart enough to pick everything on the way on my own! Thanks for clearing me up with "glass transparency" issue. You are really amazing!

Hi Hassan, thank you for your comment. I really appreciate it. I do see that in a lot of tutorials so I'm trying to create quick and easy ways to learn Arnold and Maya without being overwhelmed. I'm happy this is helping you! Thank you for telling me. :)

I find your tutorials really great. As someone who worked in the film industry and learned Maya all the way back in 2007, seeing some of the updated ways of working (and trying to remember my own workflow) is really appreciated.

It's surprising how may things have changed in the new versions of Maya, but how much of it remains the same. :)

Very nice video. I love this system, it is so handy! By the way, the attribute Sun size is also used to soften the shadows. The bigger the sun the softer the shadow and, of course, the smaller the sun the harder the shadows (pretty much like an area light).

The Sun Size also affects the softness of your shadows. Higher numbers softer shadows, etc.

@Mn2rockxz

Very well explained! Nice job. Sun size, fyi, does affect shadow sharpness as well as the intensity. Intensity is really only appreciable at smaller sun sizes.

Hello, is it wrong or not so professional to rotate the dome by using the pivot instead of azimuth? Are they basically the same thing?

How to remove that black horizon on middle of skydomelight????
@AcademicPhoenixPlus
@AcademicPhoenixPlus 5 жыл бұрын
Hi rK, If you go to your light and scroll down, you'll see Visibility attributes. Change Camera to 0, and the light will remain but the dome will 'disappear'. I hope that helps!

Hello I want to use that sky dome light but render my image without arnold renderer. I would like to render with maya hardware 2.0 or maya software render but I render only a black scene. Why does that happens?
@AcademicPhoenixPlus
@AcademicPhoenixPlus 4 жыл бұрын
The light dome is an Arnold light and only works for Arnold renderer. If you want a similar look in maya hardware, you'll have to create your own (NURBS) dome and use a gradient. It won't radiate light though. You'll have to build your own lighting set up.

how can you get rid of the black that's under the horizon?
@AcademicPhoenixPlus
@AcademicPhoenixPlus 4 жыл бұрын
Usually you have a ground floor so it reflects that and not the black line. Try using an HDRI instead. It's more accurate and you'll get beautiful reflections/refractions! kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqDPdIB5osaWhNk

Hi Monica Thank you for a great video. In what situations do you use Physical sky vs. Skydome light. And also I suppose Physical sky is easier to render, or?
@AcademicPhoenixPlus
@AcademicPhoenixPlus 5 жыл бұрын
I usually go for a skydome if I have HDRI available. For a quick render with basic day lighting I go for Physical Sky. I hope that explains it! :)

How to light environment with physical sun???
@AcademicPhoenixPlus
@AcademicPhoenixPlus 4 жыл бұрын
This type of lighting works great for outside. If you want interior lighting, you'll have to use different lights like area lights. Hope that helps!

@@AcademicPhoenixPlus I know that but in lighting with mental ray we had option of physical sky and sun which is(mental ray)is not available in maya version after 2016 so I'm asking about that physical sunlight.
