Create VR is an immersive conceptual design tool that empowers artists and designers to start their creative process directly in 3D. Using simple curve and surface tools designers can explore form and shape while being fully immersed in virtual reality alongside their design. Sketches and models can then be easily exported to Maya or other content creation applications for final realization.
Features
• Create and edit models using NURBs and SubD surface tools.
• Freeform sketching and NURBs curve tools to explore concepts.
• Layers to organize your objects.
• Import images and/or 3D models to use as references.
• Export snapshots or models to share or use in other applications.

i was wondering, i remember to be very precise with your handposition was a nightmare sometimes if you really want to be super accurate. would be nice a button that while holding it, the movement that you make with the controler will be slowed down by x0.1 or something. this way you can have some assitence when placing something precisely in some place.

In Attribute editor select your objectShape , Smooth Mesh menu / Subdivision Method select OpenSubdic CC Adaptive ... et voila!

This is neat. To me the ideal use for VR in Maya would be posing and animating. Is that in the cards?

Check out MARUI plug-in for Maya. It has a lot of MoCap features.

Tried with Index controllers, but it shows the V1 steam controllers. the Up/Down menu shows but you can't select the fly out buttons. Can't figure out how to use the contextual tools without bringing up the tool menu.

Can you use Create VR to import an existing model to view it in this VR space? Or do the models have to be created in the environment first?

Not sure about CreateVR, but with Marui plug-in you definitely can. You can even import more models while in VR.

maya 2022 is released already. Edit - they have skipped 2021 version naming.

Interesting and cool, but I don't really see how this would be practical in a fast paced studio environment.

The same thought popped up in my head... It looks like the user can send-receive models/sketches pretty quickly. Like most software, it’ll be as good/fast as the artist using it. Now, the real bottleneck in my mind is if the company has remote workstations, and the user can only plug in certain peripherals (mouse, keyboard, Wacom), and they lock out access to other hardware, specially if the artist is working from home (my current situation). All that said, I’d still love to play with this :)

Depends entirely on the workflow and field. In the case that you describe, it won't have a place probably. But I have been using VR modelling in Architecture for a while, not because it's quicker, but for the sense of scale that it brings to the process. And I know that Gravity Sketch has been used in automotive design studios before. But in both cases, collaboration in VR is key for making it viable, I don't think Maya has that.

As a long time Maya user, I'd love this. I agree that it may be as fast as the artist using it, especially if they are just o boarding into the team situation. Although if hand tracking can be very precise, unlick some of the gesturing done with the wands, have the ability to "stylus draw with your finger(s) would be great. If you're a fast artist, using the ortho PoV's to sketch out accurately/effeciantly, then just playing point (cv's) placement should be a breeze. Now incorporate ZBrush style of sculpting proficiency, that make a great package. Never really been to sold on Maya's sculpting tools. But it's growing and if you can code and make custom tools, there's no boundary for this integration into VR environment. Personally I just wish the headgear wasn't so heavy. Give me goggles as light as sunglasses* or even a mocap-like tracking system to VR with no headgear on and that'd be a fantastic step for this stuff, which I'm sure many if not most enjoy and find ultra useful.

absolutely false. painters do this all day. not to mention tons of other types manual labor where ppl work a lot harder with their hands.

Despite the Advancment of blender, i still believe in maya, but this one is really a signal for me to go to blender. No future with maya.

Sorry but I don’t really understand why you would say that about Create VR of all things. Create VR is just one of many, many features that we’ve added to the latest Maya release, and this feature / tool in particular is pretty unique and innovative. I understand that not every tool is going to appeal to every user, and I’m sure people have different opinions about the practicality of VR, but I don’t see how one wouldn’t at least see this as pushing the envelope.

For me it's actually very positive that Maya team went this way. Will be testing out how it's integrated. My bet is animation in VR is on the roadmap, which would be great, as I've been animating in VR using custom tools and it's very fast and intuitive. And the ability to then edit the curves once blockout is completed in VR within Maya gives it powerful advantage over similar indie tools.

Autodesk WTF ARE YOU DOING....YOUR MODELLING STILL TRASH COMPARE TO BLENDER. Not to mention bugs. Now This BULLSHIT ?? Maya 2022 still a hot garbage but now in VR.

Maya has incredibly powerful tools both for polygonal modelling and surface modelling, not even mentioning its UV editor, animation tools, rendering, overall stability and even more. Blender is all and nothing at the same time, Maya does not have a sculpting environment as Blender does for example, but exactly why would you need one when there's ZBrush and Mudbox which are thousands times more powerful? I've found Blender being held up by the fact that it's free, simple to use, has a lot of tutorials and you will have fun with it. Maya on the other hand is not for everyone, it's hard, interface is not intuitive, looks old, its workflow is "slower" and you must know what you're doing, but professionals don't care because it's much powerful and the negative sides are not a reason to not use it. Maybe you just gotta learn more about its potential because it's there :) I've used Blender for 4+ years now and I don't wanna come back, it's too unstable. It's not the software however, it's the user.
