I did this tutorial around 2016 as a way to learn 3D modelling and Maya so I could one day work professionally as a 3D artist in the game industry. I would come home after work, and do this tutorial over and over again until I memorized every step and detail, sometimes until 1-2am. Then get up and head to the job-site for 8:00 PM, doing labor work. Now, It's 2023 and I've worked for small indie studios, Disney and now at a AAA game studio as a 3D technical & environment artist. I still use the techniques in this video to this day. Thank you.

Hey, I'm an arts and technology major at UTDallas. Few colleges have had a successful ATEC program. However, recently I have noticed problems. The worst of it being not that long ago when I was in a group meeting for a project. A fellow student was talking about how he might have to take an extra semester. The reason for this is the simply because he was modeling a character for his capstone project and was almost done, the professor saw his work and informed him that he had made the entire model for animation, not gaming, he now had to start completely over. What shocked me was that in this group meeting of about 6 people, only about 2 knew that you had to model differently for games. None of the modeling classes teach this. Could you maybe make a video explaining the various differences in modeling for games vs animation? It would likely help more people than you think.

Nice tutorial, learned alot from it. Was wondering if this method allows me to bring it into sculpting software to create normal maps from it while still retaining the level of poly count on the unsmoothed version of the model
@MethodJTV6 жыл бұрын
yes, the low-res cage is all quads so it should perform ideally in a sculpting package.
@ryusaki42006 жыл бұрын
James Taylor ah, I see. Thanks for the quick response, is it possible to give a rough workflow of how a model would be created sculpted and normal mapped? I am student in game design creating a game character and have ran into a problem where my normal map would not be shown on the model itself even when a high quality viewport renderer is checked, was wondering if the subdivision I did on the model before putting it into the sculpting software and then subdividing it again inside the software was causing the issue when I port it back into maya for normal map baking via object space mapping And yes, I did apply a material and set the bump to use object space and my UVs on the low poly mesh has been unwrapped

@MethodJTV9 жыл бұрын
+Adam Hensley without seeing it, my guess would be that you are lining up the order edge verts OK, but the interstitial verts between the front and side view silhouettes aren't being placed correctly. Essentially, this is treating the front and side view images as just 2d images, and not looking at things three dimensionally.

@MethodJTV8 жыл бұрын
I don't often mention keystrokes, almost everything is either SHIFT + RMB. I do list hotkeys in this article here: methodj.com/maya-tips-for-beginners/The keys I most often use are g and y, as well as the qwer keys for transforms.

If I click duplicate special and do the same thing as you then the leg is in the right position but the arm is on the same place as the original but the right direction. The changes wont reflect either. What did I wrong? I use Maya 2016
@MethodJTV8 жыл бұрын
+Tamilis LP do duplicate special without using negative scale. After duplicating then manually scale the object across the axis
@icegirl2066 жыл бұрын
I have a question, i've been following your tutorial but when it comes to removing half the body, freezing transformation and doing special duplication, the vertexs aren't merged together to create one whole object, what am i doing wrong? if i try to click merge, it doesn't work either.
@MethodJTV6 жыл бұрын
the vertices won't merge. Those are still two separate objects. You have to select both objects, do Mesh > Combine, then Merge Verts.
@icegirl2066 жыл бұрын
Thank you! :)
@Vendayan7 жыл бұрын
I had a quick question right off the bat, but it's probably a lack of simpler understanding of Maya. When I attempt to rotate a cylinder, scaling on the X axis later occurs relative to the primitive object's own space rather than world space. How did you correct this?
@MethodJTV7 жыл бұрын
that was desired behavior. You can adjust that in the tool settings themselves, double click on the scale tool.

hi, im having issues with getting the symmetry to work in the same way you have. and when I get it to work, I have two halves that I cannot merge together. Do you perhaps know what wrong

+Yuu Kaname grab all the verts on the character's center line and use scale to squish then flat. Then move them to the center

Am i doing something wrong? It seems like every time I do duplicate special my model has a gap between the original slice and the new copy. I've frozen transformations beforehand but this problem keeps coming up. My teacher said that I would need to reset transformations but when I do that my model warps. I'm just tired of having to connect vertexes every time I do a duplicate special :( Any input would be great, thanks for the video!

sounds like your pivot point is in the wrong place, or your center line verts are not in a straight line. Before duping, grab all the center verts and use the scale tool to squash them flat. Then snap the pivot point to one of those verts. Do a Freeze Transform, then duplicate it and see if that fixes it.

Hey thanks James! I'm well passed this point now. I ended up duplicating the torso and then connected the verts individually. I'm pretty sure that my process has not been great and I expect to see issues appear later on because of that. But if I need to cut and duplicate again I now know how to go about it properly. Thanks again for the reply and the video!

This is great and helpful. Where did you get images and can you do children?
@MethodJTV9 жыл бұрын
+Michael Williams get the images here: methodj.com/methodj-downloads/character-photo-reference-and-image-planes-downloads/ No plans for doing children models yet, but most of the differences are just proportional - bigger head and eyes, smaller mouth and nose, shorter limbs, etc.
