This is not a tutorial on how to make holes in a cilinder, this is a tutorial on how to make a cylinder with holes.

thank you for the video. i was looking for this technique for a while now and glad i found a tutorial on it.

Very good video! I thank you! YOU really you have a lot of creative thinking! I I did these exercises and they go well, but I have a problem. Operation / Create Distortions / does not want to go. Coordinates which I introduced in Curvature do not make any impact on object. object does not want to move in any direction. What can it get this problem? I really be very grateful if you help with my problem!

Oh WOW- great service :) sorry I am intermediate in maya.. but I managed to find a way... only problem I am now is that the cylinder is too short to connect :(
@DreamWizard911 жыл бұрын
That was totally awesome!! I would have tried this with Booleans or something, which would give me totally wack geometry of course. Thank you!

It is mostly likely the threshold value. When you do the merge with options you'll see a threshold value. This is the minimum distance that verts have to be from each other before they will be merge. If this value is to high nothing with merge, to low and everything will merge. So like Goldie Lock you have to set it just right. (smile). PS - you can also adjust this after the fact in the merge node which is what I usually do. Cheers Rick

Hey, at about 2:00, you merge the verts of that combined face. How the hell do you do that in the updated version of maya?
@ctbram06274 жыл бұрын
Yes, that video is very old. I think in the new versions of maya you can combine the objects then use the modeling tool kit on the right-hand side of the gui to marque select all the vertices then right mouse button go up and to the right to vertices>merge vertices

@@ctbram0627 Thanks. This video helped me out a lot. I'm doing a vented barrel on a Browning 30 Cal Machine Gun, and for the life of me, I had no idea how to efficiently do it.

Thanks for the tutorial, but where is the video with the clean topology you mentioned? ?__?

worked a treat man :D been bugging me for like a good 2 years

If you are getting to many verts merging and the verts are pretty much coresident then set the threshold value of the merge to 0.001. If not enough verts are merging creep this value higher until all the verts merge. Be careful, to high a value and thing you don't want to merge will be.

@1038892 terribly sorry about that. This was a very early tutorial I made and I like to use the marking menus over the drop down menus. The non-uniform bend deformer is under the animation category and then Create Deformers>nonlinear>bend. I hope this clears it up. Please feel free to contact me if you need more help. Regards

do you have a video of better quality? I can't make out most of the features and inputs you are using
@ctbram062713 жыл бұрын
mark: I have long since lost the .mb for this but it works the same in maya 2012. First create a planar surface with the hole geometry and then use a bend deformer with a bend value of PI (3.1415) to wrap it into a cylinder.

very cleaver. I need to work those deformers into my workflow more often. Thanx

i have issues when i do the merge verts... i can go in and do 2 at a time... but i get really weird results when i try and do a mass merge like at 2:03 do you know why?

I can't "Merge Verts" like in this video. How dod I do it in the pull-downs?

I was stuck on the step where you create a bend deformer and use PI number for the bend curvature, for those who struggled like me, make sure you are using radians instead of degrees (or use the value 180). But if you wish to change degrees to radians, go to Windows > Settings/Preferences > Preferences . . and then . . in Settings change the Angular value. cheers
@ctbram06278 жыл бұрын
Sorry for forgetting to mention the bend value was in radians.
@KERMACO11 жыл бұрын
In Maya 2014 I had to set the curvature to 180 instead of Pi.
@ctbram062712 жыл бұрын
btw the reason you entire a bend value of PI and not 2PI is because the bend happens from the middle and you are bending PI radians from both sides which is rquivalent to bending 2PI.

that is so kind of you.. thank you :)

Sorry for the confusion sometimes I think one thing and say another. When I said "rotate" I meant "non-linear bend". You'll want to go the polygon menu and under "create deformers" select non-linear>bend.

you know it's funny... I almost always try to watch a vid I've started even if I feel like after the first several steps I'm not going to learn anything. Because you never know... And what am I gifted with this time? That pi makes a circle with the non-linear bend deformer... lol thank you :cheers:

@ctbram062710 жыл бұрын
It's actually 2Pi for a circle because it's bending from both ends.

Thanks a lot!! really! I feel obliged!
@ctbram062712 жыл бұрын
I am pretty sure this is because the rotation of the bend deformer is not correct. I am recording a video to demonstrate how the non-linear bend deformer works for you. I will post a link in another reply

Darn I cannot put a link in a response but I have added the video to my you tube page so just look at the latest video. Let me know if you cannot find it and I'll email you the link. Rick
