Great video. I came here from another of his videos to find out if he's still going ahead.

That is not subdivision modeling though. That's just smoothing poly meshes. Subdivision surfaces keep the low-poly mesh as a hull and you can control edge smoothing via the crease settings on the edges of the hull. It's non-destructive and definitely the way to go for high res hard surface modeling.

Exactly, after 7 mins in the video I was like "wait, this is not subdivision. It's smoothing groups"

So while modeling we will press 3 to see the smooth preview and then adjust the edge loops And after we have completed the modeling process we will Apply smoothing by going to mesh>smooth Correct me if I am wrong

No, dont do that. That will create a really high poly version of your model that will be hard to work with if you need to make changes. Most render engines have a method to subdivide the model at render time. Giving you the benefit of subdivision and a low res model. Using the 3 button is a way to see what your model will look like when you subdivide at render time. Google "adaptive subdivision" for your rendering engine to find out more.

@@inkman002 does unreal 4 support subdiv or can i not use that workflow for UE4 assets?
@inkman0026 жыл бұрын
@@fivemeomedia traditionally game engines rely on low poly models to keep things fast and efficient. I suppose if you were only going for a single still image you could subdivide your model before export so that its nice and smooth.

hello thank you for this video. quick question: after I add the edge loops do I go to mesh>smooth then? and it will just smooth according to my edge loops or will it add additional unnecessary edge loops?

what about UV after this? It is stretched at the corners(

at 7:30 why I tried to enlarge the edge loops (scale out ) but the whole object got wider? thank you

Whats that technique called when you can modify the lowpoly version within a visible bounding box and it applies the smoth on the go? I forgot the name of the technique and im trying to find a video of it as Ive seen some modelers use it where theyd shape a model in lowpoly, then apply a subdivision of 2, go back and modify the low poly and rerender the subdivision of 2 so that the surfaces renders and behaves in the liking of the artist?
@adriandeveraaa10 жыл бұрын
Edit: Oh I suppose its just pressing 2 (for showing low and subdivided model. Doing so shows the bounding boxes ive been seeing in videos. Thanks for the vid!

If I understand your question correctly then you the same way that we use the smooth mesh preview by pressing number 3 on the keyboard and then switching back to unsmooth preview by number 1 on keyboard. If you want to see the original volume's outline as well as the smoothed mesh you can press number 2 on your keyboard which will show your mesh with smooth mesh preview but it will also display a bounding box of the original surface. Hope this helps

Hello i've got a question if i wanna create Sci fi (hard surfaced) Game character do i have to create the Hard Surfacing on the low poly model or how does that work ?? :)
@pmownage1238 жыл бұрын
Do you mean with a soft bevel in the middle or do you mean Harden edge? if you want a harder edge, Shift right click > Soften/Harden edge > Harden edge. However if you want a smooth edge with a low poly asset there is a more advanced way of projecting a high poly smoothing onto a low poly object.

Hi. Please. Why my polycount increases after I using subd preview just like when I use smooth function?
@Edge-cgi10 жыл бұрын
Hi, Does it increase the polycount inside maya or when you import it to another software package? Inside maya the polycount should not change, unless you are directly applying the smooth to the mesh.
@4LaCKY110 жыл бұрын
Inside Maya. When I turn on "Poly Count" display it shows exactly the same faces number for subd preview as for smooth. I have cube and both subd and smooth set on 2 divisions level. Both have 96 faces.
@Edge-cgi10 жыл бұрын
4LaCKY1 Go to - display - heads up display - poly count, and click on the box next to the tool. A options window will pop up, and make sure it is set to Cage, Then it will display the actual poly count, and not the poly count when the mesh would actually be smoothed.
