Hi Shannon, I live in NS and really really wanted a trailer a couple years ago for all those times when you buy or find something that just doesn't fit in the vehicle. Then I did the math and found I could rent a 5x8' trailer from uhaul 13 times a year for 5 years and just break even with buying and registering a trailer but not be responsible for storing or maintaining it. I decided I'd rely on U-Haul since I really wouldn't need a trailer that often and could use the up front money elsewhere. I'm sure you've already done that math but thought I'd bring it up since you have so many other places for your money to go in your new house. 😊
@daalelli4 ай бұрын
@@kristaortiz6109 That is really helpful math! I've been wondering about buying a trailer recently and this helps make that unnecessary.

Spending the money on plastic gutters last September saved you thousands in water damage, nevermind the hours of labor managing the water that the gutters kept out of the walls and basement, etc. The electricity savings alone of not having to run as much tech to dehumidify the house. In other words, you made the right call addressing the gutter with plastic now and saving up for metal ones later. Keep it up! You two are doing great.
@asilverfoxintasmania99405 ай бұрын
this, and for those that have never had to do renovations they don't understand that sometimes the cheap "temporary" option is often the way people have to go, because the cost now is weighed up against what potential damage it is stopping.

Haircare tip Over years of doing construction and farmwork with mid-back length hair I found that putting it in a low bun then covering my hair with a cotton bandanna (with hat on top for outdoor work) was the best solution for keeping it contained, out of my face and undamaged. Keeps the dirt and grime out too making washing easier at the end of the day. Downside is it doesn't look the most stylish.

And Shannon you are totally badass for all the work you are putting into your house. I hope you find some.more information on her history to share with us. I hope you get yourself a trailer soon. I feel you on the gutter situation. We are talking about doing a rainwater catchment system and our house has no gutters at all. Every time it rains we watch all that precious water run off the roof and just soak into the ground. Since we can't afford to have a well dug for the homestead we are looking at rainwater until we can afford to have the well dug. Which also means we will mist likely be doing the cheapy rain gutters too and completely DIYing everything to save for that well. Out here in the Arizona desert water is a precious commodity. And the city is charging those of us whonlive out innthe agriculture zones a foutune. I figured I would take a page out of your play book for being cheap and do what we can and save towards that well and cut back on our dependence on city water.

Blessings on Neighbor Mike for giving you some of the help you needed!!! That's one of the things I miss about today's United States. Sadly I can't take anything for that problem... I just have to "deal" ... But what a great job you have done on clearing up the brush and getting gutters up... and it's awesome to have such a kind and friendly neighbor! I can imagine that is immensely helpful! Our house was built in 1916. It was added onto in 1924, which doubled it’s size. We’ve always had a leaking issue in the front of the house, which is the old part. We just accepted that because the house was a great deal and it’s otherwise in good shape. My husband would just go downstairs and wet vac up the water and put it down a drain that works. Two years ago we got a new roof. While we were getting the roof, we got a new set of gutters. We have not had leaking in the front of the house ever since. Now we still have some leaking in the back, but that (concrete) floor is constructed to just trickle in at the bottom of the wall and then into a drain without sticking around and building up puddles. Gutters are always an extra good idea. And I’m saying this before I’ve watched the video…

You are right about putting those gutters up toot-sweet and saving the paint job for later. Stop further damage and then repair, then make with the pretty stuff. The exception that I would make is for Halloween decorations. Even that I am keeping simple this year.

I just want to say I appreciate the spider shot, and that it was more than a fleeting split-second 😁

Just make sure the gutters are big enough! We replaced ours once and had flooding because we bought gutters that were too small and the water was running over the sides.

Don’t worry about the type of gutters it was more important to get gutters that get the perfect ones! You do you! We make those choices every day. It’s so nice to have neighbours that will help out. The knowledge of the area alone is invaluable! It’s one of the harder things about moving around having to find everything!

it’s really super-helpful to see how folks come up with good-enough solutions to old house woes! of course we’d all love to do things The Right Way, but needs must when you’re short time and shorter on money the Sam Vimes boots theory is so so so true

If you are interested in Indians, there's a great museum in Caseyville, Illinois. It's across the river from st. Louis. It's called Cahokia Mounds. I live the Botanical garden I'm st louis as well. The arch has a museum inside it as well

poor cannel, being deprived of all the sticks she could ever dream of! I'm sure she'll never find any ever again/s. Love seeing you and phil being brought into the community by your wonderful neighbors. wishing you all good health as you continue working on restoring the house! also psyched to see that the dehumidifier is doing so much good for that spot on your floor!

I don't live in the STL area anymore, but if you've going, you've got to check out the Zoo!! It's one of the best in the country! Going up in the Arch is fun, too, if you aren't afraid of heights! 😅😂

It’s possible that you might be able to find replacement original cast iron rainwater goods from a salvage yard if there’s one you’re passing or reasonably close to. Neighbour Mike sounds like an awesome guy 😃. Can you get a roof rack for your car for transporting large items? Much cheaper than a trailer!
@KlingonPrincess5 ай бұрын
I second the roof rack idea. I have an Xterra with a tack and it's proved it's value.

good question/point... unfortunately I have some things that need to be transported that won't work on a roof rack, but... makes my brain cogs turn, for sure!

Omg, the car I learned to drive in was an '04 Matrix! Such a great little car, and perfect for road trips too! My mom and I did so many in that car lol. At one point we also had a rack + box for the top of the car in lieu of a trailer simply because it was easier to drive it that way, and those sometimes come up secondhand - might be worth keeping an eye out for that too if a trailer doesn't show up on marketplace!

Hey Shannon, since you're going to St. Louis you have to connect with the people who run Second Empire Strikes Back. They are fixing up a old Victorian home in the same town. Lovely couple ...

I live close to StL. Sooo much to see and do! I filled out the form but also want to mention the there is a LOT of cool architecture to be seen in StL, a true historic city.

A year ago. I heard mention of that in another video. Well, I'm just glad I found your channel. And that the gutters did work. Not sure how I originally missed the year ago part. I try not to miss any of them.
