Perfect example of why firefighters don't leave a fire site or building until they know for sure the fire is out - specially because of the possibility of the hidden fire. Old New York buildings, you gotta love 'em. In firefighting, the fire largely isn't the biggest threat. The fire seems the most obvious, but an old repurposed, re-renovated, re-remodeled multi story is the biggest threat. Void spaces, balloon frame, pipe chases, irregular walls and so many other inconsequential factors, but put it all together and you've got a perfect storm for a serious situation. @@THEMAJESTIRIUM1 What puzzles me, is why hollow walls run between floors and into the roof area. Since the 18th century, buildings in the UK have been required to use continuous floors before adding any hollow walls. Even when a fire starts in the hollow, it just smoulders due to lack of air. Some larger buildings have a continuous duct for the services, but like lift shafts. it has to be constructed from brick or concrete and it never leads into the roofspace providing airflow. These days, rather than timber, hollow walls are supported by lightweight galvanised steel box sections, so within the cavity there is nothing to burn.

Not only are those communities on the north side of Tucson, sixty miles or more away, but they arrived in time to assist with cornering and arresting the shooter. We had two major industrial fires in Germany recently, on on a Diehl (an arms manufacturer) plant, the other on a Dynamit Nobel facility, with 150 responders on site. All the best & stay safe! J that Bldg had a major renovation. Cornice is gone and New bricks make up new parapet in front. (Maybe a prior top floor fire??) Some stairs with half-landings have a low window at that landing, maybe that was what happened. Stay safe

Great coverage John, glad the Mayday firefighter is going to be OK. That’s a frightening thing to hear a Mayday call. I was really concerned to see them operating a stream from outside into the sixth floor from the bucket truck with members operating inside on floors below. We were trained that it was a big NO NO! It could end up being catastrophic with the chance of collapse from the water weight, plus actually feeding the fire and spreading it.

Great angles as usual, JJ! I saw the news conference before I saw this, so I knew what was coming when you said that you were taking up. I was yelling: No John, not yet!!! 😅 It was weird looking at EMS, Doctors and Fast Truck standing by…all seemed to be routine. Who would know. You caught most of it, so thank you! @ as I have suggested to before, JJ, seeing the smoke from the entire building is equally important because smoke is fuel and it tells some of what is going on inside the structure. You had great shots of the smoke on this one and if you watch closely, you can see the heat that was blowing out of the hole. The volume velocity density in color of that smoke spoke volumes of the amount of fire that was yet to be seen inside the cockloft. Also, as I told you before, I loved your narrations, and being a former New Yorker, your accent! Keep up the good works, John!

JJ great video. When you are planning the units in the street I would like it if you did it just a little slower. I start to see something and then you move to something else. It may just because I am old and do not focus as well as I used to. (77yrs)

Yo John, honestly I’m just watching this the whole way through and I’m literally in tears because of that injured firefighter they go through so much and appreciated so little and when you hear about that, I have a total appreciation for them now and always 😢. I know he gonna be okay but as for you, I have the same amount of respect for you as well. Thank you for keeping me untuned all the way from Fort Myers,Florida

when someone said " clear a path for the injured member to get to hospital " they cleared a PATH FAST ! Old buildings had basement to roof ( BALLoON FRAME ) this is where hot ashes ran and landed . Good fight fire fighters !

What can I say that I haven't said before John, you are always on the spot and get the best coverage. Alot of departments would have left that fire scene without checking for extension within the walls. The FDNY continues to show why they are indeed the greatest fire department in the US and possibly the world. God bless the men and women of the FDNY. Keep the videos coming John and it's been a while since the FDNY have had a big fire like this to work on. The FDNY needs to make you an honorary member and use your videos for training purposes as your always on the spot. Thanks again for the amazing coverage John and stay safe out there.

I'm not sure how much time elapsed between the top floor middle windows being taken out and 23 Truck operating their gun inside that window but you would think somebody would have asked to see if everybody was out of that particular apartment before they started flowing water through that window.

Cocklofts seem to be one of a fire's favorite places to stage an ambush! Probably just smolders away until it gets some air circulation through it and then takes off.

9:30: Taking windows is common practice in the US. But I have learned recently that apart from allowing the smoke escape, meaning better visiblity for the firefighters inside the fire building, it is risky when lots of flammable gases have accumulated. The Oxygen suddenly flowing in from the outside may result in flashovers. So this practice can also backfire.

No such thing as a routine fire huh? Truer words have never been said. But to be honest, I wasn't really too worried. Not with FDNY. Not that I was breathing for 10 minutes, but if anybody was gonna get him out, it was gonna be the best. Thanks for staying on the job JJ! I'd rather see it from you than the "news media." Just goes to show you can NEVER let your guard down. You have to stay just as alert and aware of your surroundings/conditions during mop up/overhaul (Not saying the injured FF didn't) as if the fire was still active. Thank God this firefighter didn't lose his life. I read he fell 40 feet and is still hospitalized in serious condition.

Old burned out Lieutenant offers possibility of open passageways from the original fire up the walls between floors to the cockloft(no fire stops between floors in older building with balloon framing) very quickly.(Imagine a wooden chimney)
