@@jordanhare6276 Wrong, during an emergency the controller is to separate and inform other aircraft during fuel dumping, if they are in contact with the emergency aircraft.

Evidently, always adding Mayday to their call sign must be in their OP Specs for some reason. I thought it strange, but it's no different than adding Lifeflite to medivac flights. Perhaps it would be a good idea for controllers dealing with international flights to have conversion charts available so they can do the conversion instead of adding to the already extra workload crews like this are experiencing.
@thejimr Жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing with regard to the fuel on board. I've heard different controllers ask for it in different measurements... they shouldn't have to take time to convert in the cockpit. With adding mayday to the end of each transmission, it helps keep other aircraft or listeners who have joined the frequency after the initial call out that there is another aircraft in emergency status.
@maxmaxmaxmaxmaxmaxmaxmaxmax111 ай бұрын
Adding "mayday" to your callsign is a great way to make sure that stations that are new on the frequency are clued into the fact that there is an aircraft in distress. What I don't understand is why pilots in the US say "declaring an emergency" when the international standard is "MAYDAY" and "PAN PAN".
@johannessamuelsson6578Ай бұрын
@@maxmaxmaxmaxmaxmaxmaxmaxmax1 My guess is that "emergencies" can be "minor" technical issues or incidents that don't warrant a Mayday call, although I agree that it is rather vague with the non-standard communication.

@@johannessamuelsson6578 a "minor emergency" is a PAN PAN. Mayday: Immediate threat to life (engine failure, rapid depressurization, passenger heart attack, ect.) Pan Pan: Possible for threat to life (flap failure, single hydraulic failure, fuel filter warning, ect.)

I get why they need to know fuel and souls aboard, for safety and search and rescue (or recovery) but wow it’s disruptive. ATC can’t see if it’s a good time to ask, and if you’re trying to run a checklist it’s gotta be annoying because the priority to the pilots is to keep the plane safe.

A couple of things I noticed. When the controllers ask for fuel in pounds, they should know to ask for kilos or tonnes from international carriers. Also, good job by the tower picking up "QNH" without having to ask the pilot to repeat. To be honest I think I would've missed that one.

I don't understand why that cannot be transmitted through ACARS. ATC could send a message req, and the pilot accept it and the computer transmit the info down to the controller in real time. What a pain that's gotta be for pilots in an urgent situation.

@@LjL-VideosYeah you’d think that they would be familiar enough with metric measurements to realize that 20kg of fuel is less than half a tank of fuel for a car so might not be the amount remaining for a 787 😂

I'm all new to this. I find it interesting. I guess it is too much to know 2.2 pounds per kilogram, but as a Canadian I know when a plane flew across the country they ran out of fuel because of a mix up between the metric system and the imperial system. Luck would have it that one pilot was also a glider pilot and the other pilot knew of a massive abandoned air strip. They landed safely, but some children will always remember the plane landing beside them as they rode their bicycles on the runway.

@@AryehH not a pilot here, but please don’t ignore common sense question. Why aren’t/why not the very basics of; 1) souls on board; 2) fuel in BOTH US & EUROPEAN pounds, kilos, tonnes, etc; 3) onset & finish of fuel dumping AUTOMATICALLY forwarded from one ATC frequency to the next one until the plane is safely on the ground? Isn’t that possible &/or has the FAA been frozen out of drastically updating its comms systems?
@wotan10950 Жыл бұрын
Those questions can help prepare airport personnel. The number of souls alerts the fire brigade how many people they should be aware of, and what to expect in case of an emergency evacuation. The amount of fuel helps determine which runway will be most favorable in case of an overweight landing, malfunctioning flaps or landing gear, as well as how much fuel is onboard in case of fire.
