By destroying the culture of a past history of the SOUTH...this is going to make America greater? Many people of Color that never left the South and still live here, LOVE THE SOUTH and understand (like MLK did) the history, but they unlike vicious groups believe in freedom and do not want to DESTROY the past, but build a better world based on the past. Right now, we have people, and a LOT OF THEM that are seething underneath and wanting the MIDDLE OF THE UNITED STATES...which would include New Orleans...to secede from the CITIES ON THE EAST AND WEST COAST...because they have the POPULATION and want to run ROUGHSHOD over all the other states...point in fact...that is why the PROGRESSIVES WANT TO ABOLISH THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE, so the States don't matter any more just the MOB RULE of population. Not good.

You can not destroy history, but you can view that history with out the jaundiced eye of personal or racial prejudice. Mayor Landrieu, spoke to the perspective and the history of those that live in N.O. period. We need more politicians that are willing to speak to truth and are willing to wrestle with the moral decisions that they must make.

Great speech, Mayor Mitch Landrieu - my respect, sir ! - "A great nation does not hide its history. It faces its flaws and corrects them.” That includes removing monuments that try to re-write history. And perhaps even find the courage to put up a monument commemorating all the suffering?! Monuments for the painful parts of history are necessary - not to rub in guilt feelings , but to inspire reflection and thinking. Take the Germans as an example. To my knowledge, they are the only people who dedicated a central spot in their capital to commemorate those that suffered from German atrocities. Which other nation had the guts to do that?? That is, what I call a brave tackling of one´s terrible mistakes. You are on the right track Mr. Landrieu. Again, my respect, Sir.
@Princessmmviii
@Princessmmviii 7 жыл бұрын
The monuments do not REWRITE HISTORY, taking them down does. Do you want to destroy all the monuments of Martin Luther King and stop all the naming streets and parks and buildings away...because there are a LOT OF PEOPLE that didn't like or approve of his actions. DON'T BE A FOOL! People always LOVE AND HATE people in history. I can't believe how the FACTION has fomented hatred for our NEW POTUS. It isn't even sane. He is just doing what any other of the POTUS have done in the past. This is a hatchet job by the PROGRESSIVES...just like the people that hated (vociferously) Obama. I didn't vote for him, BUT HE WAS ALWAYS MY POTUS, even if I didn't agree with him. As a loyal and patriotic American...I YEILD TO THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE in the elections...and wait for the NEXT ELECTION...THAT, IS AMERICAN.

Mayor Mitch is every bit as tough and ballsy as Gotham's Ed Koch was, years ago. He may have that nice, (less abrasive) Southern accent, but Moon's son is right on the money here. I am Italian (white) and, my best friend of 35 years is a woman of color. I don't even have to ASK what she thinks about the removal of these statues. And hey... we are New Yorkers. And we are both offended. Let's remove the statues, maybe use the metal and cement symbolically..or as someone suggested, "melt them down.." Don't know if that's possible - but moving ahead, as Mayor Mitch says, is the right way to go!!

Thank you for respecting his opinion. I respect your prediction, but since I don't see much evidence of power held by the left in the US, I think in real dialogue we could create a future for all of us. I don't like liberals either. I think we need to notice that it is not the liberals who are giving huge tax cuts to the top 1% as the expense of at least 22 million people losing health care. And most of us losing are white people.

Real interesting...when you remove historical monuments and other history...all you have is just another dirty city. It is okay with me, I went to New Orleans when history was HISTORY. New Orleans has been taken over by the far left and it has been "rebuilt" and it is going to be destroyed again and again by the hurricanes...and it will wash away almost everything and it won't leave the REAL historical places. They will just be NEW RESCONSTRUCTIONS that are even MORE EXPENSIVE that New Orleans USED TO BE. That is okay...I was lucky I went there when New Orleans was really historically neat. Mayor, you can do anything you want with your dirty little city. Even hopefully protect it from the WEATHER...I would think that is more Important than pulling down statues. AND HELEN...I lived in NYC and Brooklyn and I couldn't believe it was SO RACIST...that was in 1960 and I worked in Manhattan when IT was still the greatest city in the world. I guess Leonard Bernstein also thought so when he wrote WEST SIDE Story. I loved NYC when I lived there. I wanted to bring my son when we drove up there. in 1990's and when I parked my car at a shopping center and we were going to leave it...I ran into a cop and he said (it was far our in the parking lot) "LADY, DON'T LEAVE THAT CAR FOR LONG...with those New Mexico plates, when you get back, it will be totally STRIPPED." I told him I wanted to go on the Train and take my son into Manhattan...his answer, Then someday Fly in, get a hotel and use the subway and taxies, to come here and leave your car, even this far out, NOT A GOOD IDEA!!! So good-bye New Orleans...when you cave to the liberals, little by little you lose the City.

Thank you, Mayor, for an eloquent speech. It is so wonderful to see these symbols of hatred falling and destroyed. Another small step in the acknowledgement of how cruel the white race had been in our history. Each step is important and looking at all the comments here, likely made by the same person setting up multiple profiles, this step is really scary to some under educated.

And if they think SLAVERY WAS BAD back then...just wait until they discover Slavery under a Marxist Government...and that is what the PROGRESSIVES are, Marxists. Again, how little they know. The Ignorant always can get stirred up with a total lie. "WE ARE GOING TO GIVE YOU........." Well, the Marxist Socialism has been in for over 15 years with a small break...Why are the Blacks STILL UPSET...and they hate the ONE PERSON that could give them real freedom today. That would be TRUMP...but they can't see it. They are once again being led by the Judas Goats.

Coming from a different country than the US, I can't help but draw direct parallels to our own communist monuments that are still standing and protected by the communist-sympathizer politicians and lawmakers (backed by 'casual' communist groups consisting mainly of old farts and lobbyists) to this day, even after decades of us officially no longer being a communist country and being in the EU. And I can absolutely attest that this speech is super true. The exact same statement (and action of taking down our monuments) is needed to be repeated over here for us - Yugoslavia disintegrated, Communism was on the wrong side of our country, it disappearing anyone that so much breathed in its direction was wrong and the only way we can possibly move past it is by having the legislators approve to tear down our monuments, despite the stupid death threats and such. I can only hope the US keeps on this track...because it's gonna take a long time before this kind of stuff happens over here.

It is amazing and very much welcomed to hear a politician speak the truth and nothing but the truth, so help him God. If men and women who are in positions of power and influence had the mind, heart, and character as this man, especially pastors and preachers who claim to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, we would have a lot more "Heaven on earth". Jesus told his followers to pray...." thy (God's) will be done on earth ( USA ) as it is in heaven. In heaven, there is no hatred, no lying, no deceit, no white race, black race, red race or any other race, just one race, the human race, born of God, citizens of Heaven who think, speak and act just like their heavenly Father. The only reason anyone would feel threatened about their so called race becoming obsolete is because they do not know where they really came from before they came to this earth, their true purpose for being born and fulfilling that divine purpose . Know this for a fact.......there are no statues, monuments nor anything else that would breed hatred or the dehumanizing of any human being regardless of the color of their skin, allowed in Heaven. Inside of every true believer in Christ Jesus is " the kingdom of heaven." Jesus didn't come to start a new religion but to bring to earth a Kingdom.......the Kingdom of Heaven to earth. Jesus is the King of kings and sooner than most think, the government will be upon His shoulders and men and women of this awesome planet called earth will finally have the government that they have been yearning for. One where Truth, Righteousness, Justice and Love will dominate the whole earth. Come quickly Lord Jesus!!!!

On August 14, 1862, Abraham Lincoln invited a group of black people to the White House. In his address to them, he told them of his plans to colonize them all back to Africa. Listen to what he told these folks: “Why should the people of your race be colonized and where? Why should they leave this country? This is, perhaps, the first question for proper consideration. You and we are different races. We have between us a broader difference than exists between almost any other two races. Whether it is right or wrong I need not discuss; but this physical difference is a great disadvantage to us both, as I think. Your race suffers very greatly, many of them, by living among us, while ours suffers from your presence. In a word, we suffer on each side. If this is admitted, it affords a reason, at least, why we should be separated. You here are freemen, I suppose? Perhaps you have been long free, or all your lives. Your race is suffering, in my judgment, the greatest wrong inflicted on any people. But even when you cease to be slaves, you are yet far removed from being placed on an equality with the white race. The aspiration of men is to enjoy equality with the best when free, but on this broad continent not a single man of your race is made the equal of a single man of our race.” Insulting southern Americans is not the way to bring people together is not the way to bring people together. It is the way to divide people.

Really had nothing to do with the typical IT HAD TO BE A RACE ISSUE. The Blacks had been taken from their NATIVE AFRICA (uh, anyone ever hear the TERM "African"-American...their choice, personally I HATE THE TERM! They are AMERICANS just like the rest of us) but it seems as if some of the former Africans wanted to GO BACK TO A SAFE PLACE IN AFRICA and as slaves they had been RIPPED FROM THEIR HOMES IN AFRICA. So, some of the Founding Fathers supported and helped (think Jews and Israel) them FOUND a country of their own. Now you can put a NASTY and RACIST twist to it as many hateful people do. OR you can give them the benefit of the doubt and think they were trying to do the RIGHT and magnanimous thing and return per their desire the Slaves that had been RIPPED from their homes to go back to the place of their roots and be free and have their own total government (independence 1847) I find it interesting that all of everyone THAT HAS STRIVED for independence is LAUDED AND JUST WONDERFUL AND IT IS GREAT...except for the CONFEDERACY. When they FOUGHT FOR INDEPENDENCE...the people that think INDEPENDENCE FOR EVERYONE ELSE IS JUST GREAT...but the SOUTH were Un-American and traitors. As my late husband used to say "IT DEPENDES ON WHOSE OX IS BEING GORED!" The South just wanted to have INDEPENDENCE. And in fact ROBERT E. LEE was opposed totally to it. But he lived in Virginia and that was his home, and like many LOYALISTS to the Crown (1776) since they LIVED IN THE COLONIES...they supported the COLONIES rather than the Crown. Were they tratiors...to the CROWN THEY WERE. To call the GREAT MAN, ROBERT E. LEE anything but the great man he was is unfair. Just like had we lost the Revolutionary War, all the Founding Fathers that SIGNED THEIR NAME TO THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE would have been HUNG. The North was a little more magnanimous than that. They didn't hang the people that tried to secede. They JUST WANTED TO BE INDEPENDENT. I see no problem with that. I also see no problem with the PEOPLE OF COLOR that wanted to have a country of their own again on their own Continent. Nobody FORCED anyone to leave the "HATED UNITED STATES" nobody was like slaves takes by force to Liberia. They went of their own free will by choice. It was a GOOD THING TO DO...give the people that the SLAVERS (not generally AMERICANS as it was against our laws from "On January 1, 1808, the importation of slaves into the United States was formally, and finally, abolished. ... (Great Britain's similar law, the Slave Trade Act, was passed by Parliament later the same month.) The law set its effective date as January 1, 1808-the earliest date possible under the Constitution." It was not something that, since it was "property" like indentured servitude. Different name SAME THING. Just like we have today with people that are LOCKED into a deal with a Mexican Coyote, a person who smuggles Latin Americans across the US border, typically for a high fee. They frequently fine what it really is becomes indentured servitude. It is also done with Asian people who come into this country. Illegals are FREQUENTLY "Slaves" it just isn't called that. If we allow illegals, we encourage those actions. IT'S CALLED IN REALITY, SLAVERY and it is alive and well in America today. That is the real reason for ending Illegals. By one method or another, they become slaves because they are off the radar of being a citizen. There are any number of ways to enslave an illegal. They are not protected by the Constitution nor the laws. They do not have to be paid ANY legal salary...much less Minimum Wage.

From reading the posts here, the majority of you are not capable of hearing what Mayor Landrieu was saying. Therefore, he was not speaking to you. Those that have an open mind/heart could fully understand what he was saying. If, or when you have developed a greater SPIRITUAL growth, you will understand that your current positions are GODLESS. We are all "spiritual beings" who are learning and growing to be more spiritual. I speak NO judgement against you. This is just FACT that those who are more evolved, know to be true. There are many of your ilk, who have later, had a change of heart. George Wallace for one. There also many who read what I am posting, who will take offense and rant with angry words. And that is okay. There may be others who will understand the truth of what I say. There are many books with Spiritual truths but I will give you words from a book from a book the many of you know of and may have read; The Bible. 'The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God." 1Cor:1:18 "Love NEVER fails." 1Cor: 13:8. "If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And we have this commandment from Him: Whoever loves God must love his brother as well." 1John 4:20-21. Open your hearts/minds and let GOD speak to you, to reveal what GOD says concerning this and all matters concerning love. "So now, come back to your God. Act with love and justice, and always depend on him." Hosea 12:6.

If your ancestors fought for the confederacy, then they were traitors. I'm not being judgmental, it's just a fact. They fought to destroy our country. In any other case you would call them traitors to their country.

Do you understand the difference in the Civil War and The Confederacy? Gettysburg is about the Civil War as a whole- including the patriotic union soldiers-not just about honoring the losers. Sort of like how one can recognize WWII without celebrating Nazis.

The only reason that you are arguing about this topic is the history of the United States is too short. In other countries people killed each other like slaughtering animals. Is that worse than this topic? I have to say what you are doing should be the reason why the United State is the greatest country right now, but you should know this statute is not important as what you are thinking.

Ever wonder why they didn't try Jefferson Davis for treason? Davis wanted his day in court. "If you bring these leaders to trial, it will condemn the North, for by the Constitution, secession is not a rebellion. His [Jefferson Davis] capture was a mistake. His trial will be a greater one. We cannot convict him of treason." -- Salmon P. Chase, Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court, 1867. Shelby Foote, The Civil War, a Narrative: Red River to Appomattox, Vol 2, 1135

His is a speech that promotes division, not unity, among Americans. You cannot remember forgotten history by removing statues. You remember forgotten history by remembering it. If it is time to update the locations of the city's statues to reflect a more modern view of the city, who could disagree? Landrieu would like his speech to have been something special, but it was not. It was as base as a campaign stump speech. It was Mitch Landrieu at his best.

crimony it's a damn piece of stone. Stone that will get to be shoved in a museum that tells the real story, not on a pedestal above the lives of people.

The black unemployment rate, the Chicago murder rate, the out-of-wedlock birth rate... all went in the wrong direction with a black man in the White House. Removing these statues shows how pathetically helpless America is to help African Americans in any real way. Lee Circle has always been a great place to see Mardi Gras parades and a park for the homeless. And because of the traffic, the trees, and its high perch, no one ever actually ever saw the damn statue.

As you drive on St. Charles from the Garden District towards the statue, the highway bridges block the view. As you come upon the circle, the traffic confusion won't allow you to look at the statue. Once you're in the circle, the statue is too high to see. Maybe if you approach the circle from the CBD to the Garden District there are no bridges, but it's a one-way street in the opposite direction so you can't do that. Liberals once again screw over blacks while taking credit for helping them.
