Removing the knob assembly on my Maytag was completely different. If there's no locking tab on the backside of the timer to pull out, try removing the silver knob by putting a dull blade under the knob's edge and working it forward and out, away from the shaft. The knob has a prong on the backside that fits into the main shaft of the timer and is retained this way. This worked for me.

Re: Previous Post... take the face plate off the knob and there is a locking tab that pops right out allowing the knob to be removed.

I have a Maytag Performa model PAV2300AWW The timer seems to be working but doesn't line up with the lable on machine . In other words to get it to start a regular fabrics cycle you have to put it between the 4 mark and the rinse mark. Doesthis mean timer is bad or can it be corrected.

Probably not. Since my timer was bad (not a slam, after 20 years, go Maytag), I took it apart to do a forensics check and found that many of the contacts had been badly burnt, and there was no way of replacing them individually. It reminded me of burnt points on an old automotive distributor. And, the timer is impossible to reassemble without the proper holding jigs. After being told by 6 parts houses that new timers weren't available, several weeks later, after I bought a new machine, one had been shipped to me. Go figure. Even so, I'd still have the rest of the parts in the washer with 20 years of wear and tear; and, the transmission had leaked oil and was making unusual noises. Time to replace.
