Mazda thinks differently - and continues to do so with this car, CX-60. This SUV is the largest model the brand has made in recent times and in this Plug-in Hybrid form, the fastest too. The platform's all- new and there's a hand-finished 'Crafted in Japan' design ethos that the company hopes will propel this car into contention with premium rivals.
Previous Mazda followers will be interested to see if the brand's usual sharp handling has been preserved by this 2.1-tonne SUV; the company promises it's snappily-titled 'Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture' platform will help deliver that. It's a chassis that's made possible the introduction of a PHEV powertrain - the company's very first. And a pair of more conventionally-electrified 'M hybrid' mild hybrid petrol and diesel units. So, Mazda is going up-market, in product size, image quality and luxury. Can cars like this one support that move?

I own a 2023 CX60 PHEV Homura and love it, but you do need to understand how to get the best from any PHEV to avoid frustrations. Many early CX60 reviews (on its launch) were justly negative because early models were blighted with some ‘bugs’. This more recent review is more balanced, fair and credible. If you never plug it in and drive it over long distances in its Sport mode, then performance will be awesome, but MPG will inevitably be disappointing, given its extra battery weight. But I charge it overnight and on a regular 60 mile commute I am enjoying 88 MPG as much of my journey is in EV mode. Of course, to that one must add the cost of electricity, but I am making distinct fuel cost savings compared to my previous diesel Mercedes. But a PHEV is largely about emissions reduction, and not cost reduction. Hence, you might never recover the higher purchase cost of the PHEV compared to the cheaper diesel equivalent if you drive 100+ miles every day. Longer distance drivers should therefore consider the diesel (which has surprisingly low emissions for a big diesel SUV) but the BIK tax benefits may distort that decision for company car drivers. You also have to respect that any PHEV/EV range is limited and weather and conditions will impact. My CX60 might predict merely 28 miles as being available on a cold start up, and then deliver its promised 40+. This disconnect between battery status reports and actual delivery seems to blight all EVs and PHEVs, notably in Winter, and has caused considerable anxiety amongst early adopters. You also don’t routinely need to use the button that impacts on MPG unless you want to preserve EV range for a zero emission zone later in your journey. My 2023 model displays none of the adverse characteristics reported by the unfortunate early adopters. My advice is this. The CX60 is a fabulous car on a par with other Premium PHEV equivalents and yet is £12,000 less to purchase. But before buying ANY PHEV (or EV) do make sure you understand the PHEV technology. Then you won’t be disappointed.

BIK was the seller against the much better Diesel.. Gov UK at its best..lol. I think Co Car Drivers with 40000+ miles per year should be exempt from the Co Car tax. It's hardly a perk rather a necessity to do your job!!! I would have had a Skoda Superb Diesel. Perfect car for me. Ended up with a CX60PHEV. half the milage to a tank of fuel My company will pay massive fuel bills but I am sure (NOT) that it is better for the environment???

Great comments; I demo'd a cx60 phev soon after driving a q4 eTron - i noticed none of the alleged harsh suspnesion (when compared to audi, bmw, mercedes benz et al). Transmission was fine as well. I then drove another sample a few weeks later. I have to say I struggle to reconcile my personal experience to the comments made by may reviewers. Great car and great vid !!

Excellent comment, thank you! I've had my CX 60 PHEV for just over a month now, and other that having ordered the Koni Adaptive dampers I am super-happy with it. This is my first foray into EVs/Hybrids in my 56-ish revolutions around the Sun, and it's a bit of a learning curve, but I love the car! Also in Luxembourg electriity is cheap compared to a lot of other countries, so it's a bit of a no-brainer, it does my commute to and from work (55 Kms) purely on electic power (unless I get late-middle-aged silly with the throttle on the motorway). The allure of 330-ish HP :)

@@chionyenkwu2253 Personally I find the ride surprisingly hard around town and the open roads for a car of this... class? Price range? OK, so I'm an old bastard with a dodgy back, but still... Koni have brought out a bespoke set of adaptive dampers for the CX 60 PHEV and Diesel versions which are said to be somewhat more compliant at low to middling speeds, but firm up nicely at higher speeds. Nothing "trick" or electronic about them, much like the OEM ones but different. Under EUR 1500.- including dealer fitting and wheel alignement, worth a try for me. At worst I keep the OEM dampers which have less than 2000 Km to date.

I test-drove the diesel version of this car yesterday. The power, interior design, and exterior appearance are impressive. It felt great driving on flat roads. However, the road noise was quite loud when driving over coarse chip at speed. It's not a quiet highway cruiser; instead, it's loud and boomy. The suspension feels cheap and doesn't effectively absorb bumps or road imperfections. Additionally, there was a small rattle in the dashboard. Overall, I would not recommend this car yet, but I'd like to one day, after Mazda do the engineering properly, and address the asking price. Its unresolved.

Great review, test drove this new Mazda last weekend, it is big in real life…and yes the overall luxury feeling is evident everywhere! I decided to order a new CX-5 instead, still don’t feel confident to be able to charge batteries whilst on long European drives. It’s a pity stupid European perceptions on petrol engines keep Mazda from releasing the 6 cylinder petrol engine here in Europe. Although I sill ordered a great Mazda CX-5, the CX60 in petrol would have been better choice!

If you don’t regularly charge the CX60 PHEV overnight and hence never drive in EV mode, you will then be driving a 2 tonne mild-hybrid petrol vehicle with a 2.5L engine that will have worse economy than the regular (mild-hybrid) CX-60 petrol or diesel given it’s considerable extra weight and the impact of the Charge button. There is then no point in owning a PHEV, except that company car drivers suffer lower BIK tax while their employers pay more for fuel and the planet suffers from the emissions of a heavy beast with a wholly internal combustion engine. If you won’t use the EV/Normal modes, please buy the class leading diesel CX-60 model or a fully fledged EV. A PHEV is wrong for you.

To get the handling promised, the truth is you need the petrol and diesel. It's probably not a bad stab at driveable PHEV, but even Mazda can't beat physics, as we'll see when Alfa go PHEV. What's the Italian for "drives like a brick" ?

What is the "Real" fuel economy. I have read some saying 250miles with a fully charged battery and a full tank of petrol...That is no good and must be terrible MPG

If you regularly drive 250 miles per day and will only charge the vehicle overnight (or never) don’t buy a PHEV. Buy the diesel CX-60 or a wholly EV. You only benefit if you properly use its EV range. I rarely drive more than 60 miles per day, so over 50% of my motoring is EV, and I enjoy 88MPG. Over 250 miles, that probably drops to around a still decent 36MPG if starting with a fully charged battery. But if you never charge the battery, economy will be worse than the CX-60 petrol or diesel given the extra battery weight. A PHEV isn’t the right choice for everybody.

I bought a cx60 top 3.3 petrol in Dec 2023, probably a mistake, worst car I've ever owned. Uncomfortable suspension which becomes tiresome on daily driving, so much of the road is transferred to the passengers. So harsh and causes the whole car to rattle, but mainly the boot area, clunks and bangs as you go over any bump in the road. Unless you are driving on perfect tarmac it's awful. Technology doesn't work, the driver personalization system rarely works leaving you sat 10cm away from the pedals on a regular basis. It drifts all over the road at speed, the lane assist is aggressive and very intrusive and cannot be disabled (thanks EU) permanently which means menu diving to turn it off on all journeys. The cabin has steamed up several times meaning you are unable to drive away until you have cleared all the windows which are heavily covered with condensation. It constantly alerts me about everything, so annoying, I know when I'm entering a road, I don't need to be alerted about everything I'm doing, I'm 60, not 10. The doors feel cheap and light weight when closing them, most owners have noticed this. Compared to a CX5 I bought the same time it certainly feels cheaply made. The CX5 is problem free and feels solid, but it seems Mazda have lost their way with these new CX60/70/90 models
