As a second car it'll be perfect. The range is perfect for commuting - we're all too tall for the back seat to be practical but like I said as a second car - just perfect. The one thing I worry about is the "supportive" seats. I'm not over weight but I feel the side seat supports a lot - not sure if it's because it's a new car but it does feel like quite a bit of pressure on the side of the bum and legs.

Are those competitors really competitors though? I have a Mazda 6 and test drove a MX30 last week and loved it. I can fit my young children and dog in the boot in this the mini, honda or fiat just dont offer that. And even the corse or 208. These are competitors in price only. Not what the car offers. This is comparable to the note or id3 but way better value
@AutoEV3 жыл бұрын
Hi Gee, first of all, thank you for watching. You make a point, up to a point. Mazda see the car as a "lifestyle" (yes, we hate the term too) vehicle, insomuch its a car that is more style over substance much like the MINI and Honda. You are correct about the size, but price-wise and target market, their respective manufacturers see them as competitors.
@stevemccormack99483 жыл бұрын
I would have the Mazda over the Mini and Honda any day
@AutoEV3 жыл бұрын
It's a tough choice for us. I absolutely loved the Mazda, probably one of the most surprising cars I have driven, and I absolutely adore the drive of the MINI. But I can't walk past a Honda e without smiling, and for me, that is what a car should be all about.

Thanks for another informative review Bryan, and especially for editing in close-ups of the screens and controls as you talk about them. I'm in two minds about the rear doors - querky, yes, but in the old days when lots of car doors opened in that direction they were called "suicide" doors, and for good reason. I wonder if NCAP tested "door hit from the rear while rear passenger exiting"? Ouch! Finally, when you were seated in the rear you said you'd talk about the raised floor later - did I blink and miss it? Perhaps while an ad was interrupting ...
@AutoEV3 жыл бұрын
Ah, Brian, you eagle-eyed viewer! You are completely correct, I mention the raised floor, then don't talk about it in that section. The reason the car has the raised floor is to do with the fact that the car has been engineered to accept a petrol engine as a range extender (a Wankel Rotary no less!) and so needs the extra space in the floor pan. I talk about that elsewhere in the film, but not where I said I would. Well done!

I listen to the argument about range and how it meets most my needs - and it does. But then I think about the odd long trip and then the range extender might fill that gap. But then I think about the government and how they would consider it then a hybrid and screw me on road tax. .... and I don't know then. Maybe it is still early days to blow that much money just yet.
@AutoEV3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tony. Yes, I get your point. I'm the same, as most of my driving is local and the size of the MX-30 is absolutely ideal for me. But then (well, after lockdown of course!) I drive to Scotland 3 or 4 times a year to visit family, and at over 300 miles, it just would be a bind to do it in this. Thats when the range makes itself felt, but then perhaps I'm not the target market for the car? It would have to be our second acr, and £25k is a lot to spend on a second car. But it is an excellent little car nonetheless! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Bryan @ AutoEV.

You need to check out The Late Brake Show by Jonny Smith. He has an episode about an MX-5 that has been converted to EV power. I agree, it would be a brilliant car!

It depends on your needs I suppose. For some it will be the answer to many things, but not to others. It is a great car to drive though. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Bryan @ AutoEV.

I really would buy one - the size and style is just right for us - but for the performance and range is just too compromised. A real shame - and a 'range-extender' is just a cop-out.
@AutoEV3 жыл бұрын
I get what you mean about the range-extender, but don't dismiss it without driving it. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised! Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and comment. Bryan @ AutoEV

Surely if there’s going to range extender model then that means they know the range is not big enough. Why put a small engine in?, just put a bigger battery in?

8 mins 41 - suddenly the car is left hand drive !
@AutoEV3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben, allow me to elaborate on this and your previous comment about the ladies hand! Due to restrictions regarding COVID-19, I conduct all the filming by myself, and so therefore can't have anyone with me on these shoots to do tracking/cornering shots. In this instance, we use footage supplied by the manufacturer to add into our own footage to give more variety. We always try to use the same colour of car too so it doesn't detract too much, or look too obvious, but obviously you spotted it! Hope that helps explain, and thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. Best wishes, Bryan @ AutoEV.

I get teh THEORY behind the rightsizing thing but if you have a family and do 26 miles a day 90% of the time great. but when you wnat to do a holiday, a longer trip etc it make it unsuitable. What am I gonna do? buy a 2nd car for family outings?!?!?! that makes no sense!
@exomnius2 жыл бұрын
If you only need one car in the family this car is maybe not for you, but if you need 2 cars anyway (like for us) , this is a very good second car for the short trips, and for the longer ones we use the bigger diesel.

If I had not seen the preview pic I would have put money on this car being yet another overly large pretend off-roader with a stupidly sloping roofline. Is it just me or do other folk remember the days when a Fiesta-sized car was considered more than ample for the majority of people ? How much could the price be reduced on cars like this if practicality was king? Are we going to have to wait on China producing no-frills cars?
@AutoEV3 жыл бұрын
No, I get your point. This car is pretty much the ideal size for me with a wife, a small daughter and small dog. This would do everything I need a car to do, so I agree with you. It's why I love the little Honda e and I spent 5 months with a MINI Electric, albeit the 3 doors of that car were a bit of a pain at times, and both have a much smaller boot than the Mazda. I think this is a superb small family car. Thank you for watching the film, and taking the time to comment. Bryan @ AutoEV.

30 minutes charging time from 20% to 80% on a CCS 50KW/h charger that you've mentioned, is what Mazda claims, which is not true! I share with you my experience after 4 months driving a MX30, and not just test-driving it for a few hours, MX30 is absolutely a very gorgeous car, inside-out with outstanding finishing quality and very comfortable and pleasant to drive. BUT WHAT A SHAME!!! Technically as an EV, MX30 is useless! When the temperature drops to freezing point or even near, driving range on the highway drops to 110KM (140KM off highway) and worst is the charging time, it takes over 3 hours (in cold weather) to recharge the battery on a CCS 50KW/h charging station and not 45 minutes as announced by Mazda! You need to stop 3 hours at a fast charging station to be able to drive less than one hour!

Sorry but this car is pointless small battery and rubbish doors. When they want to get serious with EVs a 77kwh battery and 4 real doors then it is a contender
@AutoEV3 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree Tom. It has its place. That would be like criticising a Ferrari F8 Tributo for being impractical and not very economical. It will suit some people, perhaps not all. Thank you for taking the time to watch the video and comment. Bryan @ AutoEV.
@tomquimby86693 жыл бұрын
@@AutoEV So at the Mazda boardroom, We need to have an EV presence. yes but we don't have any batteries, we will have to buy them in. What if we make a limited battery design, make it unattractive to most buyers by using suicide doors. So only limited production run till we can get cheaper batteries. Pass it to influencers to try and dream up uses for this limited design. So good job mr AutoEV you have played your part.
@AutoEV3 жыл бұрын
@@tomquimby8669 thats a little harsh Tom. And we aren't influencers by any stretch of the imagination. All we are saying is that for some people, this car will suit exactly what they want from a car. I would, personally, like more range, but the design of the car and the way it drives is something is something I really like. It could do with being a bit quicker, but as I said, batteries weigh a lot, so why carry the unnecessary weight around with you if you don't need it and have it hamper the dynamics? Horses for courses.
