I can tell you for a fact as a Miata NC hardtop owner. When you fold the hardtop down you get really nice grip in the back. The lower center of gravity is great. Also I removed my rear muffler and it took off about 35lbs. And in my opinion it has more than enough power. For $10,500 out the door with 70k miles im more than happy with my miata :)

3:40 Well that's what a fun car is all about. It's not how fast you're actually going that matters, it's how fast it FEELS like you're going. It amazes me how few people realise this. They all seem to think ultimate speed is what equates to fun but it isn't. You'll have buckets more fun in an original Mini Cooper S at 50mph than you will in a a modern supercar at 100mph.

I love EverydayDriver's reviews. They are honest, fun, and don't bore you reading stats & features of a car. However, I do take exception to Todd's notion that the car needs another 100 hp. If this car has too much HP or Torque, it would take away from the ability to hammer the car and drive it aggressively just about anywhere at any time without having to exceed 80+ mph. This car does a marvelous job of giving you the perception of speed without drawing the eyes of police or endangering yourself and others in the process. That being said, this car is not slow by any means. It's quick. Sure another 30 hp or so would be nice, but that's easy to achieve with a few mods. In stock mode, the car is a gem.

I do agree, but I think many Americans don't get access to great European-esque roads. Suburbs, cities and highways. Honestly, American highways are a horsepower arms race even just for safety. I grew up in a great drivers area in the country, that is what this cars is built for.
@jimr57035 жыл бұрын
I'm an American, and I get the point of it. American car enthusiasts have a tendency to drive something and think, 'How can it be better?'. First answer for this car is; more power. Push the go pedal out of a corner and it leaves you wanting more, and the stock engine obviously just doesn't deliver that extra level of enjoyment.

Mazda has adhered to their winning formula since you boys were driving big wheels. If Mazda souped up this car with your power requirements, everyone would complain that the've abandoned their mission to create an affordable, fun, reliable commuter. There is no longer a competitor (MR2, Sky, Solstice) in this price category, but yet the Miata lives on. Maybe tradition is something that should be revered and not criticized.

Trust me you will LOVE it! I've had mine for 4 years now, and still I can't wait to drive it every day. It's that good, you'll see! The only bad thing is, you may be inclined to break the speed limit at all times. Best power comes on around 80mph (about 4000rpm in top gear), then it just continues to build from there. Thanks to a very low drag coefficient, air drag does not rapidly slow you down at high speeds (like a pick up truck or mustang or sedan would do) .It just keeps pulling like crazy

Im totally in love with the car and by the way, it has the manual soft top which I think suits the looks of the car more than the hard top. Anyway, everyone has an opinion and in my opinion -if you get a good condition example of this car at any trim level the only thing I would warn you about is this: these cars are seriously addictive, mine is my daily drive and I-and Id caution, you too, wont be able to keep your hands of it because its great!!!✌🏽

Let's be honest...where would you need (or probably even want) an NC with 100 more HP? Sure, on track days and autocross, more horsepower is always a good thing. But in the ten years I've owned my NC Miata, with significant suspension and chassis-stiffness upgrades, the car drives like it's on rails. And that is something I can use on the twisty rural roads around where I live. The nimbleness and ability to toss it around with confidence is the point of this car and I absolutely love driving it. Having 100 more HP would basically be a waste.

@eurosceptic1 - Every car is more fun to drive with the top down - The terrible Chrysler Sebring convertible is the best example. Leaving the top up requires a person to focus on the dynamics of the car and not be distracted by the top-down fun. And we encourage cross shopping of new cars with used cars, thus the S2000 comparison. We're a show for enthusiasts and both are great cars to consider. Of course this car is better with the top down, but you hope you noticed how much the guys liked it.

I had the Gen 2 (NB), second version within Gen 2 (NB2) which was fantastic. However, the very thing I first loved about it was what forced me to sell it. I felt like I was inserting my body into a shoe when I got into it. It was comfortable once inside but I am now in my 70's and this became an inconvenience. It handled like a go-kart, was super reliable and easy to work on. Eventually, driving it in heavy got scary because I actually felt safer on my motorcycle because I was more visible, and that is very scary. This Gen 3 Miata is more suited to my age group and is slightly more visible to traffic. It is no longer a purist's sports car who grew up with the LBC's (Little British Cars) like I did, but it is indeed a great little car. Now my sports car of choice is a VW Rabbit Mk 5. It's still small and handles like a bat but I feel safer in my roll cage.

The handling is so balanced and the steering so responsive and communicative. The Miata makes a great city car as well, even with the MT. I routinely get 26-28 in city with some highway and 32 on the interstate doing around 75 MPH. It even rides nicely and the seats are close to absolutely perfect (a bit more side bolster would be ok). Great questions - First off, whenever we had our camera man in the passenger seat of the MX5 we noticed a serious drain on the power. He's probably 170lbs. It was noticeable. Secondly, Todd's exaggerating a bit by saying it needs 100hp. That capability exists and such a kit is available which is why he called it out. But, even a 30-40 hp bump would help here. No doubt these cars can cope with lots of tuning. Like the FRS/BRZ - the MX5 is a bit underpowered from the factory.

Guys, I love your double perspective reviews! always have and always will. Im glad that TRUE opinions are expressed. These guys that complain about your views on speed cant afford a real sports car. After all it is a SPORTS car, and asking for a bit more speed is ok. Funny about time and perspective. Just to pull a car out of the past: 1990 Ford Probe GT. 2.2L Turbo charged Mazda 4 cylinder engine producing 145 HP, and weighing in at 2970 lbs. reaching 0-60 in 8.1 seconds and the 1/4 mile in 16.2 seconds! I still remember just how many of us considered it a quick sporty car. My friends and I loved that GT. Fast forward and listen to all the negative comments about the 2011 Mazda Miata PRHT 2.0L Mazda 4 cylinder engine producing 167 HP, and weighing in at 2593 lbs. reaching 0-60 in 7.2 seconds and the 1/4 mile in 15.5 seconds! (Automobile Catalog reference for both) And how many of us including Everyday driver consider the Miata a slow car? What'sa matter wich yous guys? Actually, that's not completely correct. Paul wavers on if the FRS needs more power, but Todd clearly states the need for more power in our PCH drive piece (vs. Lotus Elise and Genesis). The 100hp comment Todd makes here is an exaggeration, but it does feel more underpowered than the FRS, especially with a passenger. In short, both cars would benefit from an increase in power. We hope you'll stick around and watch more of our work. Thanks for commenting!

I own a 2007 MX-5 Soft Top. I actually checked out both the S2K and the MX-5 before deciding, and obviously, I like the MX-5 more. The main reasons were: The power band is a little too high on the S2K. The MX-5's mid-range torque is really nice in the corners, and you don't have to peg it off the rev-limiter to get somewhere. I also like the fact that the MX-5 is a lot more economical; 30 MPG and low insurance cost. Also, it seems like the S2K brings some unwanted attention some of the time.

Unquestionably, I would get the hard/top simply because when you park t at any given parking lot no one can slash the top. It is a very much loved car in the UK though and it rains and snows for 10 months of the year here. You just have to get used to being a little more careful in the wet and snow than you would in the dry and make sure your tires have good tread on them. If you have worn tyres in the wet or snow on this thing then you will be doing circles.

I stepped up to a NC 2.0Lt 2005 LE MX-5 after having owned a NA 1.6Lt S-Ltd Eunos import (Japanese import into the UK) for 2 yrs and package size (I'm 6'2"), maturity of design & execution aside, it was a let down. The on paper power increase didn't translate to a car that felt faster or more fun on your typical UK B-road. The only viable option was to visit famed MX-5 tuner BBR and upgrade via one of their normally aspirated 200 Bhp kits (& dropping ride height -30mm courtesy of Eibach). Only then did the car feel like the complete package and a worthy rival to a S2000.

Hopefully I will buy the Mazda mx5 as my first car! One of the 1990's-ish versions, so it wont cost so much. Would it be a good first car? I'll still be at school and everything

Now a days one can't find one where I'm at cause no owner of the MX5 wants to part with it GRRRR... I use to own one when I lived in Hawaii and I miss the it. Needless to say, it serve it's purpose for what I need it, I'm not out to race anyone just drive from work to home & do some errands and find a small parking space. Lastly, the reason I want the hard top is because one can leave it at a parking lot and not worry that someone might slash the top like they did to a friend of mine to his Mercedes.

Once again, I agree with a reply here. I wouldn't call these reviewers bad by any means, but, I would say that they do miss some of the finer points of the design and purpose of this car. They claim quite blatantly, that this car is not a "powerhouse". I believe this statement to be false, because they NEVER mention power to weight ratio,(a BIG deal!), and they NEVER give details concerning the gearing or power curve characteristics. The gearing is absolute perfection (4.11 axle for one thing).

As a guy who owned and restored dozens of classic British roadsters, and owned 2 MX-5's continuously since 1990...I would argue that someone who feels they are over-rated, or underpowered etc...simply doesn't understand the heritage of the car. You might as well argue that an MGB or TR4 is underpowered. Basically, if you don't "get" the MX-5, fine, walk on. But don't knock what you don't understand. My 2 cents.

main reason i love the miata is it handles much like the first generation Rx7's. very predictable and very nice in the corners. the key to being fast is maintaining speed. you dont need a lot of HP to have fun.

I heard that Mazda is targeting the 2200lb weight with the next Miata. If they can do that I'd imagine that even with the same engine here that this would make it a much faster car. I'm currently driving a 2010 Speed 3 but as good as it handles nothing carves the twisties like a Miata and I'm hoping the next gen are a step up because I want one:)

Haven't checked mx-5 yet, but I was in s2000 and I had not enough space for legs (i'm 6'2). You surely gotta try both to see :)

"I'd recommend this to an angry post-menopausal secretary." - Todd How far the dynamics of the show have come and still the early shows are still fun. Especially with tidbits like this which are just waiting to be mined out of the archives as people go back and experience "Everyday Driver: The Early Years."

@MrChillgoose People that are worried about looking 'gay' have no self confidence. The Miata is rear wheel drive, perfect 50/50 balance. Its more a sports car than a lot of cars out there.

Forgive my ignorance upon asking this, but how does this machine grip wet, or icy, snowy streets or roads? I'd buy a MX5 in a heartbeat if I only knew how it drives in inclement weather. I would use it as a daily driver. I'm located in the northeastern part of the U.S. and driving can be quite a trip come winter, especially with the Mazda's rwd. Any 4-1-1? Many thanx... Peace!

Having driven every iteration except the new one, I have preferred the original for multiple reasons. Styling is very basic, motor bay fits a V8 easily, and the transmission if fantastic. This gen has me giddy though. 6-speed, decent power adders available, and its styling is akin to my 6. You are right about the S2000 though. Much better car in many ways. I'd still buy the MX-5/Miata though. Whatever the reason, its still being made and the Honda isn't. That says a lot about this car.

I've been seriously considering the new 1.5 se basic car. For British roads, that's enough.

I don't get it. How do you enjoy the small and light weight of the miata then turns around complaining how small the interior space is. It is the small and light weight of the miata that makes it a FUN car to drive.
