This is a really good redesign, but I do think the front end may have benefitted from some styling cues on the RX-Vision concept as this car would almost be the 'production' version in that instance. But even then, a brilliant design nonetheless, well done!

Power train wise as in the engine potential vs the Renesis. Sure but from factory the rx-8 has the most out put NA rotary of all rx-7’s and didn’t need turbos too make 232hp which correct me the rx7 needed two turbos to make 278? The chassis superior in the rx-8 has more potential in that department hands down. Get this car in the right hands of someone and it will lap an Rx-7 guaranteed (which I refer to an FD).

@Satri Satri Agreed, I have a stage 2 racing engine in mine done by Cameron Worth who runs Pettit racing (look them up they’re cars are badass). The only down fall really is that the apex seals are thinner but just run a thicker oil to solve that problem. I’m running 15w40 rotella in mine currently

I feel like Mazda should move on from any aspect of the RX8 design and bring something entirely new. Much like the 7 to 8, they look nothing alike. Visually, they are completely different. Im hoping the next gen RX, when/ if it happens, will be a breath of fresh air compared the what felt like a miss, in my opinion. Looking at the redesign though, I would think it needs a more aggressive front end. The headlights from the miata feel to tame. Mazda needs a car that looks fast, in its line up. That illusion that its moving fast while sitting still.

The rx8 really captured the Mazda design language of the early to mid 2000's. The rx7 captured the language of the 90's. I feel it would be cool if they did something similiar for a 9.

I totally agree that the RX-8 is one of the few examples where the production car looked better than the associated concept car, especially when it has the optional aero pack (visible on the blue car doing burnouts at the start of the vid) and rear spoiler. Overall I prefer the design of the pre-facelift, the post-facelift just tried too hard to look like a 2nd Gen smiley Mazda 3.

Headlights, yes. But in terms of the rest of the car, I think the post-facelift looks better, especially with the larger diameter oem BBS 19" wheels that tie everything together. Mazda modernized it and made it properly aggressive without staying from the original character of the car.

actually its vice versa. the facelift rx8 actually came out before the 2nd gen 3 and mazda tried to give all their cars that smiley look as the rx8 was the brands flagship at the time.

Great concept! The vehicle is such a chimera that it can have a completely different look to it even photographed from various angles. I could see Mazda taking notes from the Nissan Z and bringing an 80's aesthetic to modern RX. Possibly keeping the suicide does as they differentiate the line from the mx-5. Maybe even mid engine rea.

B) you didn't properly take care of it (like drive before warming it up, didn't change the oil every year etc). Many people had already proven that this is very reliable car along with its engine.

It's millions or billions of dollars of investment and years of development. The reason why the rb and jz were successful is because they had previous versions to build off of. The design holds true to the idea of the RX8 marking Mazda's transition from the RX to the Miata as the company's foremost sports car. You can see Mazda's design language evolve from the sharp rear end to the sleek front end. With that said, the front bumper doesn't go far enough to delineate this RX8 concept from the identity of the modern Miata, like the car is straying too far from its RX roots. Nonetheless, well done.

I currently own an 04 RX8, used to own an 09 R3 RX8. One of the best cars ever made. Fuel mileage is no concern of mine. The weakest point of the car is the engine: the renesis in many ways is a downgrade not only from the REW engine in terms of power, but even the 70's 12a's and 13b's in terms of durability. Unlike those older engines, which are almost always rebuilt when they die; the Renesis is almost always just tossed and replaced with a new one from Mazda.

For me personally, I feel like this car lacked a LOT of character it's predecessor had. I really didn't like it when it came out, because it looked nothing like the RX-7 but i get it's an acquired taste. I just hope they don't take the RX-8 as an inspiration for an eventual reboot of the Rx line.

And that is the problem with the eight production version, it whispers compact in the way it looks. 9:13. This is a good start, but the rear of the car needs to be more aggressive, lowered slightly and then squared off a little. And the weird curve on the window of the back door doesn't fit the lines of the car. This is just my opinion.
