Great collection. Bill Evans is always top tier and is an inspiration as a pianist🎶🙏🏾

Most of these weren't even on my list, Mazzy!! What a conundrum. So many terrific releases this time!!

Interesting reviews. I like the honesty. That Sister Rosetta Tharpe album looks cool. There is a preview track from this album available on Spotify. It sounds amazing. Her guitar playing and singing are on point! I hope you are able to review the Brother Jack McDuff RSD release on another video. I have my eye on that one too. Definitely getting the Bill Evans and this Tharpe, as well as the Band X release. All four LPs I'm interested in are RSD firsts but I'm still going on RSD.

"You never know what you are going to get with SUN RA". I agree. Today I happened to look at the hype sticker on a reissue of a Terry Adams Solo release. Sun Ra appeared on it. Here is Sun Ra's quote on the sticker. "He may not speak the same language as most people but he can reach them anyway". Was that about Terry Adams or was it third person? lol

I see some money being spent on some of these! Saw Sun Ra in Boston in 1977. Haven't seen anything like it since. Great review Mazzy!

Art Tatum - for me he has been a revelation. I too purchased, $25 for the 14 vinyl box set.

You may get to these in part two, but the ones I'm most looking out for this RSD: Cannonball Adderley - Burnin' in Bordeaux '69/Poppin' in Paris '72 (they must be keeping these tapes in wine cellars over there) Brother Jack McDuff - Ain't No Sunshine Manu Dibango - Manu '76 Pharoah Sanders - 7" edits from the 1977 "Pharoah" (India Navigations) (Also, I think the R Crumb, Cheap Suit Serendaders qualifies as "jazz".) And one last thing. There's yet another Charles Mingus comp, "Reincarnations", from his Candid sessions. To my knowledge there's never been a complete Candid Sessions collection, but, by god, we're due. Can we end this constant recycling and just put it all out on a couple of LPs?

Here’s a question for you. I’m an old fart who has seen everybody imaginable up yep about 1990. I also need a walker now. But I am DYING to start going to some cool small jazz clubs where they play the kind of music you showcase, even though those cats are sadly all dead.not looking to see big stars or anything, probably just good local blokes in a nice cozy joint. ……. Signed, Maynard G. Krebb’s twin sister. In Berkeley CA

It all depends where you live. In Seattle here there’s a club called the Royal Room. Lots of new jazz arts and smaller known ones play there. It’s great.

regarding the bill evans, completely agree on the 33 vs double 45. the flow to me is waaaaay more important than whether not if I A/B'd them and noticed the 45 being better. life is too short to flip so much, not to mention, if you have a woman's company, you're definitely not putting on a double 45 ; )

Hey I just figured it out! You, Mazzy, are the 21st Century Ralph J Gleason incarnate. What a great tradition you have carried on. Jack Sheldon was really funny on Merv.

Ralph knew way more about jazz than I will ever know. And he was a great writer too. And his love of the psychedelic Bay Area bands.

'Saturnian' would be the proper demonym for Sun Ra. First saw them at Bard College in December of 1986- a peak musical experience! Then several times after that in NY and MA (a great Disney Tunes show there at the Iron Horse, Noho). Some wonderful/treasured albums of his IMO- Sound of Joy, Strange Celestial Road (a rather singular recorded manifestation of him to my ears), Blue Delight, Purple Night, Live at the Pit-Inn, Tokyo, 8/8/88; Destination Unknown; and then rarer, less-produced live recordings like Cosmo Sun Connection.

I can’t handle Sun Ra. Just like later day Coltrane is a little too out there for me. I already have a good copy of a 1980’s reissue Original Jazz Classics of Everybody Digs Bill Evans so I may just get Yusef Lateef album or maybe nothing. I actually am curious about the Brother Jack McDuff album
