I was SO mad at NBC for canceling Santa Barbara that I quit watching 2 other soaps because they were on NBC! A. Martinez was the main reason for that! The cast and the writing was so far above any other soap and most other prime time ! Thank you for that work! From then on, I watched anything from A. (And Marcy and Nancy and Robin). Loved him in Longmire too!

I’ve been watching A Martinez on SB I scheduled my college classes around him and that show. Then I got a VCR AND IT WAS AWESOME!!!! I have seen his work he has done for the land and American Indians and indigenous people and it’s such a blessing he is sharing. He has touched my heart more through that than acting because it touches my soul. I love how he loves his family and the way he treats people.

I went to an elementary school where A. Martinez father was the principal. Adolph Martinez Sr. Principal of Haddon Ave in Pacoima California. He would bring A. Martinez jr to our school to visit and wave to us 😅 on Friday (Flag Day) he soon became a Big star shortly later. Even as a 10 year old .. I thought he was handsome. But much respect to his father. He was the Best principal ever.

To A…I’ve watched you for decades on various shows. Don’t ever think you weren’t/aren’t good at this acting gig. You are amazing in your roles. Ps…love you on Longmire! To Maurice…wow I can’t imagine watching GH without you there. Honestly I mainly hang in watching because of the Sonny character. He is GH….you created him. I LOVED SANTA BARBARA!!! A Martinez as Cruz and Marcy Walker as Eden was pure magic. All of their stories and scenes together were just beyond amazing. I still will never forgive the writers for how they ended their story. The whole Eden split personality story was horrible to say the very least. The last 2 years of the show many of the core characters were either recast badly or written out. What made the show so iconic was gone by that point. Longtime fans hated all the changes which ultimately is what ended the show.

That was really interesting and enjoyable. There's something about A that gives off the sense of reassuring dependability, like he's the sort of person you'd like to have for a neighbor. I liked the story about how he and Marcie were given free rein to do whatever it took to get Cruz and Eden going as a couple, and they decided they needed to get them laying on top of each other on the floor, and yeah, they got it. Doesn't matter if two characters tripped and fell on top of each other or if it was the result of a fight, but take one part body contact with one part eye contact and stir it up with the right background music, and if there's any sort of chemistry between the actors at all, you can instantly feel the sparks and potential. Tbh, I don't remember how SB ended, but I do know my mom and I were still watching it and enjoying it every day when it was cancelled, so it was obviously still a good show. (Ah, the luxuries of having become a two VCR household, able to watch two shows that aired at the same time!) It's funny, though, looking it up just now, the storylines sound absolutely wacky and convoluted. Amazing what a good solid cast of talented actors can do, because it's not so much the storylines I remember as the characters and their relationships. (One of the moments I remember most clearly from the show was Mason reciting Rudyard Kipling's poem "If" to his sister Eden. (Actually the third poem I heard recited on a soap and which I then went away and memorized.) Years later, when I watched the movie California Solo, knowing only about Robert Carlyle's part in it, the second that A appeared on screen my brain just went "Cruz!" and was delighted to see him. And kudos to you, Maurice, for your telling of the story about how you thought you had won the role in the film with Meryl Streep, the look of rapture on your face as you were like 'aw yeah, I'm gonna get to work with Meryl Streep' and then the abrupt comedown as you related how you learned that actually, no, someone else got the role instead -- A Martinez. I just started cackling, perfect delivery, well done.

Loved this so much, it was a joy to watch you both :) So much respect between two seasoned, fantastic actors - thank you! ❤ I grew up watching SB in Germany, where it was HUGE (although we were always four and a half years behind!). Having said that, much as I loved SB, once Lane Davies left, then Marcy, then A, it all started to unravel. It was a shame because it was the most unique soap opera - never took itself too seriously and the writing (the first few years) was beyond anything I've seen since. I often wonder what would have happened to it had it been allowed to continue. Would it have eventually recovered or would it have just gotten worse and worse as time went on? We'll never know. In the meantime, there are always blessed KZbin channels where you can watch scenes/episodes and reminisce and remember what used to be. SB forever! ❤❤❤

Well, Maurice, I saw your remarks made from the heart on the Facebook Live with Marcus concerning the way characters on soaps must evolve and grow. And I agree. I love the soap genre and that's one thing I like the most. I must say something I think you will not particularly like and that is the energy from Laura Wright (I'm not a particular Carly fan) brings out the best in you, adds dimensions. Implications will remain unsaid.

My personal opinion is that there is still not enough diversity in soaps. We have come a long way but it's still lacking in so many areas. And fear is always the common denominator. Fear of the fans acceptance, fear on the part of the networks, fear from the sponsors as well as the powers that be. It seems really short sighted in this day and age but...I think if you have the right formula, the right EP's, writers AND actors you can't lose even if you take risks. You have to be willing to take risks. Especially when it comes to soaps because they still don't get the backing they deserve. Santa Barbara could have made it if they had the right people in place. The Bells did it right by creating a family Dynasty and in turn, became a force to be reckoned with. Agnes Nixon was another force who was so ahead of her time with AMC and OLTL, I believe if she were still alive and at the helm they would still be on the air. I think Frank V has become that kind of force with GH. This is why Y&R, B&B and GH are still on the air. You have to believe in it with everything you've got and keep pushing to keep it fresh and relevant. We don't want them to go the way of the others. There is still so much story to tell!
