It is an extremely popular hike and can bring crowds. Although we found a spot at the trail parking, during peak times you may consider utilizing the $5 shuttle that runs weekends from March to November. It goes between the Park & Ride off exit 140 on I-81 to the trailhead on Route 311.
McAfee Knob is named after James McAfee, a Scotch-Irish immigrant who settled in the Catawba Valley in the late 1730s. It is a true bucket list destination that takes hikers to the top of Catawba Mountain where you find stunning 270-degree panoramic views - and rock outcroppings for those insta-worthy pics. It is no wonder why this trail appears on many lists of the country’s top hikes.
