Good tips. Here's another that might help some of you. I was always nervous about hitting the quick and my dog just barely tolerates trimming. Now when I'm planning to trim I catch her earlier in the day relaxing. I grab a fine point sharpie and draw cut lines or even just a dot on her nails to indicate where not to cut past. That way when it's time to do it I can just bang it out by referencing the lines, without worrying about being too close.

We started trimming our puppies nails as soon as we brought her home. We played with her feet constantly. And worked up to be able to cut them all at one time. Last weekend, we gave her a bath, blew her dry, brushed her, and then trimmed her nails and filed them. She literally slept through the nail part. She snored lol. She's 5.5 months! We're thankful for the work we put in on this when she was only weeks old. She's a beautiful Saint Pyrenees (Great Pyrenees and Saint Bernard). Thank you for your channel! It's made all the difference for us as first time puppy owners!

seeing people respect the bodily autonomy of dogs (and kids too!) is healing to my soul. wish people treated all animals with this much care and respect.

A previous video, where you start touching their feet when you bring them home has been invaluable to start this. That video also says to check ears, sniff in them, check eyes, mouth. Another video of yours talked about drying your dogs feet when they come in and teach them not to nip when you do this. Those 2 videos have guided me to where Toby (3mos) lets me trim nails as he sleeps beside me. And he expects to get his feet dried when he comes in so winter will be a snap for us. Thanks

Great ideas! My dog is super fluffy, has thick, black nails, and she’s a (very large) puppy so still getting used to it. We’re getting better but the wet fur is definitely a very helpful tip for the long fur situation. I’ve also found a grooming table to be very helpful. I know it’s not necessarily an option for everyone but since I have to devote a lot of brushing time once or twice a week, as well as ear cleaning and nail trimming, I decided to invest in one. Getting her up higher and unable to run off is very helpful. She just kind of accepts her fate and settles in for her grooming session.

Trimming my dog's nails gives me serious anxiety. When we first got her, I got safety trimmers and she was great about letting me hold her foot. Her quick was very close to the tip and I didn't know. I clipped, she screamed, I screamed, there was blood. I can't even watch you trim nails without hyperventilating. I get her vet to do it every few months because it was just so traumatic for both of us.

With my current and two previous dogs I use an inexpensive grinder for nail trimming. All three dogs had dark nails. I knew that if I hit the quick, that particular pooch would likely be much harder to work with in the future. I highly recommend a grinder for anyone really nervous about trimming the nails. The biggest drawback, in my opinion, is it takes longer to finish all the nails than if you cut them. But for me the extra time needed is an acceptable trade-off for the peace of mind knowing I won't cut into the quick. There are more expensive (over $20) dremel tools that run at a higher speed which might do the job more quickly but that's just a guess on my part as I've never used a high-speed dremel.
@ibpanrioe4 жыл бұрын
I just got the dremel tool and I hope this would help me not be nervous! I take so long to position the clipper to not cut too much and not hit the quick that my pup gets nervous with the clipper of impeding doom...

My golden retriever Harry is perfect with getting his nails done but my beagle Darwin on the other hand can be very stubborn and even a bit snippy when I’m clipping his nails. What are your opinions on the electronic nail files? I have one and I feel like they work great for taking off smaller pieces of nail and doing it more often. Harry is great with the nail filer but Darwin prefers the nail clippers. Great video!

Unfortunately, when you're in training to become a professional groomer you can't just put a snack on your face or give treats. Some dogs are so scared of new people touching their feet and they rather try to defend themselves out of fear before cooperating. :/ Their parents don't take the time to teach them to be calm. I'm trying to figure out how to do this more quickly and gently for the dogs that are not mine. I want to do my job better for them to feel safer with me.

I just hate it when I quick my dog. In my defense its typically because she's nervous. She's very well trained and tolerant but she licks her pause during it. Poor baby. If I could id keep her in a cement run a lot to naturally file them down but im sure most people can't afford to make such accommodations and I can't either. We both win when its painless. ( most of the time) :)

Real talk. If you don't want a dog that barks you have the wrong breed. They do it to protect you and training them to stop barking goes against their natural insinct. Even during the day they will just bark randomly. This is a sign they are bored or they are doing their job. There are 2 different kinds of barking. One playful, high pitched bark which is just saying I'm bored. The deeper bark is the protection bark and you should not stop them from doing so. I've got 2, one full farm and one paddock. You learn the difference and will get used to the protection barking at all hours. If they are bored, give them something to do that won't distract them too much from doing their job. Ie, do some exercise then put them back. Depends how you house your dog but that's my suggestion.
