I feel like training videos address bulky puppies. I have a Biewer and I don't want to damage his neck (we went through trachea collaps with last dog}. he is very light and 16 weeks old and a bitey little so and so. please demonstrate with a young toy breed some time.
@dacedebeer2697
@dacedebeer2697 6 ай бұрын
You are right, smaller breeds of puppies are more fragile, but they are also less of a real problem for nipping/bite-play though, both in bite power and in the fact that big dogs can get really dangerous when grown and untrained. Some small dogs can be biters through-out their life and not do more than scratch the eventual guest with their teeth, but a big dog that's like that can be a big problem. Many of these bigger breeds don't mind confrontation either, they will impose their will on you if you don't impose yours on them. A clear show of dominance becomes important when they are young because they take it with them, and they will let you control them when they are grown and could drag you down the street. They retain a memory of you being much stronger, and the challenge not being worth it, especially if you keep them well fed and stimulated physically and mentally. When they don't have much to complain about, they will yield more easily.

I think one of the best strategies too is with what energy you come towards your pup or cat. Honestly it does help try to have the best leader energy. Dont be afraid ,nervous ,sad wtv emotions you get remember they would sense it. I think this is key.

This did NOT work with my border terrier mix. He was still able to reach around and bite my arm and he got so riled up it resulted it a pretty major time out all around… He can’t come near anyone sitting down without biting. We’ve tried ignoring, redirecting, giving him a toy instead - nothing seems to be working. I tried this today and it really didn’t work…I’m sure it’s me but we are really struggling with this.

Sounds like it is time to work with a trainer irl. Videos can only get you so far, and I think both you and your dog would benefit from personalized guidance on how to work through this. Best of luck and patience!
@nothanks6784
@nothanks6784 7 ай бұрын
It sounds like you need to perfect the hold to a point that he can't reach around. Did you try tightening the collar more to make sure he doesn't have wiggle room? If a hold isn't possible with the strength of the trainer or the size of the dog, the other dude's probably right about a proper trainer.

This was the same with my high drive super confident pup but we got a martingale collar and pull the loop up and then release when he sits and relaxes and it’s made a huge difference. We also made a flirt pole to play with by tying a toy on the end of a horse whip from tractor supply to satisfy his herding instinct and it has calmed him down significantly.
@Theorist9

I am afraid of this with mine, as well. He's much bigger than this puppy in the video. He has a HUGE/WIDE mouth and is all teeth so I'm not sure how successful this will be for me either. The martingale collar mentioned below is not a bad idea. I may try that instead.

Thanks for your help. Very useful. Question. I have a 7 month old Lab. Got him at 8 weeks. He has never barked or growled. Dream dog, yes. BUT, I wonder if some dogs are born without the ability to make sounds. Looked it up on google. It seems there are physical issues that can cause this situation. However, he exhibits none of the symptoms. Have you come across this before?? Thank you.

This kind of training doesn't work with every dog. Some pups need to be taught with e collars and leads to really get control. As much as I like positive reinforcement, I've found out it's not completely dependable with some dogs. It varies on the dog but I'd recommend also watching the dog daddy if you searchem on KZbin you'll see the wonders confidence with lead leashes etc

We hired a dog behaviorist and she was a court appointed bite specialist so she would help when dogs were going to be put down because they bit someone. She would help get that dog redemption and not get put down. So I really trust her a lot. But she says our puppy, who mouths our hands a lot but never really hard and never aggressively, is totally fine to keep doing that. I have a really hard time accepting that answer. Am I crazy or is that crazy?

If you don't like it, it's not ok. She's used to the worst case scenarios; her job is to keep the badly trained dogs alive, and she is certainly conditioned to accept a "good enough" approach. But if you don't want your dog nibbling you, just train them out of it the way they do in the video. Especially if you have a dog expected to grow a lot, those nibbles will hurt when she's older.

If they're already getting sufficient exercise they may need a bit more mental stimulation from things like Interactive toys, training sessions, new experiences, nosework, letting them lead a walk or switching up your route, rotating their toys, games, etc. You can also try feeding them in slower more fun ways like lick pads, kongs/toppls, food dispensing toys, scatter feeding, using their meals for training, etc
