This video was brilliant. I'm on day 3 of a new pup and having this knowledge from the beginning means my pup is currently asleep in his crate and we've had no accidents in the house so far. One thing that may help others, my pup is not that interested in toys, he's more interested in cuddling me. This has meant I was struggling to tire him out because he didn't want to play. Because he just wants to be with me, I've now taken him into the garden and I run away from him so he runs after me and I reward him for coming to me. 10 minutes of this 'chase' and he's tired enough for me to settle him in his crate. All dogs are different, we have find what works for our pup.

Found your video on day 3 of new Dalmatian puppy. I’d like your recommendations… 1) Our puppy goes from High Highs of play to crashing asleep in less than 2 min. He also awakens and cries incessantly when either of us pick him up once the crash and move him to his crate. Do we do that anyway? 2) Puppy also sleeps only about 45 min at a time. Not the 2 hours you report. And awakens whenever either of us move away from him after he crashes. TIA

Great video. The only discouraging part was how easily he seemed to take to the crate. I’ve followed all of the tips and tricks for getting my puppy acclimated to the crate and even nine weeks later it’s still a struggle. She cries when I initially put her in there, but settles once I’ve left the house. She’s very reactive when I’m home trying to practice with her in there.
@benkitesurfs2 жыл бұрын
Do you get really excited when you let her out of the crate in the morning? Do you let her out of the crate as soon as you get up? Might help to be very calm in the morning, spend 5-15 minutes going about your routine, ignoring the puppy in the crate, and when she is quiet for a moment, take advantage and let her out calmly without getting excited and riling her up. That way everything about going in and coming out of the crate is associated with calmness. Good luck with your pup!
@sarahrose11222 жыл бұрын
@@benkitesurfs I actually don’t crate her at night. She sleeps in my bed. She is crated when I leave the house, but to avoid having her only associate the crate with me leaving we practice at random intervals throughout the day for different lengths of time. Initially the crate she was in was too large, and placed in a room that we infrequently spend time in. It was my guest bedroom. I’ve since purchased a smaller plastic crate, and it’s in the living room where we spend a lot of time. That has helped some, but she’s still not fully accepted it. Since the beginning I try to maintain a neutral attitude towards putting her in, as well as taking her out of the crate. She eats in there frequently. We practice commands in there. I hide treats in there. I give her a frozen Kong stuffed with treats and filling for when I do leave the house. It’s hard to decipher whether she’s exhibiting separation anxiety behaviors versus confinement anxiety. I do work from home full-time, and am home with her frequently in general. That’s why I try practicing with the crate throughout the day.

Hi, I just got a 3 month old Australian Shepherd puppy. Its My first day and I'm so nervous I keep forgetting things like bringing some kibble to encourage our puppy. I learn as I go. When I took her for a walk, she would stop, like an anchor. Refusing to run. It took a bit to earn her attention to the name Bow-Bow. I learned that she wouldnt come because she wanted to stop and eat everything. So, once i was able to get her kibble she was more motivated, but still hesitant. I spent the first 6 hours with her already and no matter what I do, I can't seem to get her engaged in playing (or walking for more then a few steps.) After the first 2 hours, I'd won her over to sit and come, but she's still pretty nervous. This is my first puppy and I want to do everything right by her. When we brought her home, she was okay with exploring our kitchen and living room areas and following our daughters around there, but as soon as it came to our hallway to the bedrooms and bathroom she wouldn't even come, not even for a treat or reward. She turned around and went back to the living room. What advice might you have for me and my Bow-Bow? (Short for Rainbow.)
@jamesdunker9248 ай бұрын
Sorry, just a follow-up, my intent is to get her to play and engage in activities to burn off energy because I know this breed is considered a high energy breed. I've walked her every hour on the hour for a good half an hour, but she doesn't seem like she has this need to burn off energy. She doesn't mind touch, in fact she seems to welcome it but when it comes to making play time a we thing, a her and me thing, she follows the toy for a few seconds and then just lays down or her attention is pulled away to something else and she doesn't want to sit with me, just close to me and my wife. I hope to here from you soon on any advice you could give me. My guess is that I just don't have the right toys
@jamesdunker9248 ай бұрын
So, I'm on day 2, and my Australian shepherd still seems like she has no drive and no energy. We struggled with crate training on night 1 and for the most part, she's been sleeping and whimpering today. I can't find any marks or pains over her body and I'm worried that she'll be a night owl if she keeps resting during the day. So, again, any advice would be appreciated, thanks!
