In this video, we will show you a training exercise so you can learn how to teach your dog not to pull on the leash. This training exercise won't just stop your dog from pulling on your walks, but it will teach them to not pull on the leash EVER! This informal "leash respect" as we call it will be one of the most-used skills that you teach to your dog. It won't matter if you're indoors, outdoors or anywhere else, this skill will show your dog that they need to keep that leash loose. It's going to teach your dog to pay more attention to you as well! I love teaching my dogs this skill and you will see how helpful it is when you start to work on it with your four-legged family member!
Do you have a dog who starts pulling IMMEDIATELY when you walk out the door? THIS will help: • Leash Walking Training...

This worked perfectly! We did it first inside with no distractions, second moved to outside with little distractions and then moved into an area with a little more distraction. After building the foundation moved to giving 'treats' every other time, then moved to every third time until we didn't need treats every time. It also worked great to do it during meal times so they had to work for their breakfast & dinner. Thank you!

Thank you SO MUCH for these tips, Instructor Steve! I have been training my five-month-old Goldendoodle using many of the training videos given for free (Thank you!) by McCann dogs. My puppy had been developing a real pulling issue, but this morning on our walk she did much better after I implemented one of the things you suggested. Instead of saying, "no pull!" when the leash tightened, I simply used the "quick few tugs" method you suggested. It worked! Thanks very much for sharing the wisdom you have gained through training your own dogs.

A tip to not have the dog be so hard to work without treats is to avoid picking up treats before desired behavior, most dogs will connect the dots and understand that tricks are only worth doing if the treat is already out. Instead, with a bit of practice and large pockets/a large pouch - you can time your treats as well by simply being quick to pull it out and give it to the dog ^^

I love this channel. I just got a 1 year old 30lb hound mix, she's shy & nervous but so sweet once she warms up to you. Currently in the first phase of house training. She tends to pull on the leash a bit, the collar and harness I have for her are a bit too big so I need to get smaller ones, and she isn't liking any treats we give her. milkbone biscuits(got the variety flavor) she doesn't like, and for training we have peanut butter biscuits and chewy chicken bites and she doesn't like either. what she does like is her pig ears and rawhide. so I can't really train her if she won't eat the training treats haha! but this is so helpful, I'm going to be here nearly everyday!

Hahaha. Very recognizable. My dog does fantasic in isolated environment (or just people) and a treat in hand, she can do anything and will do anything. As soon as another dog (or cat) enters the arena, it's time to play (or in the case of the cat, hunt) and nothing else will convince her otherwise.

what you're not seeing is the beginning steps of gaining the dogs attention from the raw untrained puppy stage. Every dog has the ability to become the "Eric Cartman" of dogs, but with simple steps and short repetitions and positive rewards you can actually watch your dog teach himself to be calm. That's really what the epitome of training is...seeing your dog with that "GOT IT" moment.

Tried the military approach yet? take a 2 meter/ 6 ft leash, hold the end of the leash with both hands center body. start walking. Now the important part, when you see your dog start pulling you start immediatly running in the opposite direction. holding the leash center of your upper body directly on your lower chest!!! with both hand and you also slightly lower your upper body to further lower your center of gravity. Your dog will then "fly"...2-3 times...then he will follow and get a reward. also constant reward him if during walking as long as he does not pull.

I found it is the same with my GSD/malinois mix. Essentially, she just plainly hate walking. Absolutely everything else in the world is more interesting than just walking on a leash, no matter what treats I am rewarding her with for not pulling. I am able to walk an entire block without her pulling at all if we are playing tug at the same time which is obviously not annoying at all.

You can use different equipment or make use of the harness that have a clip at the front. Loose lead walking clip at the front, and the one on the back if you need to get somewhere quicker. Driving to the park if you own a car and letting your dog off or using a long line so they have no chance to pull x

I like to get at the top of the stairs. Throw a kibble to the bottom. Pup goes down to get it and then I drop one at the top and pup runs back up. Up and down, up and down. Or do some fetch with a ball. Anything that gets them more active. Walking is great but doesn’t spend that extra energy some dogs have.

Love this technique for the most part. I would love to see using something other than the bumping of the leash. I think some people would progress that to actual hard leash pops. I love seeing the different ways to teach something so difficult. Thank you!
@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Kim! To be fair to the dog the rate at which you’re popping on the leash may need to be faster. If a harder pop is required then you may be waiting too long before adding the leash correction. What’s really important in an exercise like this is using just enough “bump” or “pop” to effect change. Then pour on the praise when your dog is back with you. The moment your leash has tension you need to start using those bumps! This is how the dogs begin to understand that the “cue” is leash tension and they’ll begin to fix themselves before it gets any tighter! Thanks for watching! ~Ken
@kimhunter5145
@kimhunter5145 4 жыл бұрын
McCann Dog Training Hi! I don’t use leash corrections in training. Which is why I was thinking that this technique could be modified a bit for me and while If I did use corrections like this I would use it early so it would be mild, I know with the normal pet owner, things could escalate easily and quickly. I would rather that not happen. You all work on attention skill a lot in your videos, so as just a question, why not come up with an interrupter word that is also highly reinforced to get attention? Just thinking out loud. Like I said, I like 99% of this technique you have shown and it would be easily taught in a group setting. And I am sending the puppy potty training videos to my in-laws for their puppy. They are having issues and are not close to me so I can help.

You are certainly thinking the righty way, Kim! The earlier, the better and you’ll be able to reinforce the great behavior without having to redirect! The challenge most people have is that their environment overwhelms their dog (and them in some cases). If you are able to interrupt your dog from leaving by using your voice and they are still on a loose leash, then that is ideal! It’s such a nice way to reinforce the choice of staying with you! When dog owners start to increase the challenge for their dogs, they need to have great timing with their voice, and what will often happen is that they are constantly talking to their dog to maintain that attention (which is a double edged sword unfortunately). If the only way to maintain attention is to be speaking constantly, the value of voice begins to diminish. And at some point while increasing the challenge, the dog will inevitably make a mistake. This is actually a good time for the dog to learn “what isn’t allowed”. By using the leash to redirect your dog back then praising when they return to you, it begins to put a little onus on your dog to work a little harder. By starting to discriminate between the “good responses” with praise, and the “GREAT” responses with a high value reward, your dog starts to choose you because you are valuable. Because dogs will do what’s rewarding, you’ll start to see your dog looking to you more often and offering you that attention because you’ve established a history of reward for doing so. I really love answering questions like this, as we often get to show this to our in-class students but it’s much more difficult to show the behavior change over time on KZbin. I think there’s another video that you’ll find helpful on our channel that talks about some simple ways to be more “magnetic” with your dog. Here’s a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/raDKcnmLrNKYidk Thanks for watching! ~Ken

As a first time owner I did a lot wrong. I was very inconsistent with leash training and had to try out a lot. We ended with the tree method which was perfect. Before we did it with clicker which worked out too but then I lost the clicker. I'm so excited for my next puppy and how I will train leash manners. I thought about using the clicker, directly using collar for nice walking and harness for pulling plus training to respond to leash pressure. My girl was a lab bomb wanting to go anywhere Im really excited for my next dog.

Thanks for your videos! I’ve got a long way to go...Should this training be daily? I see you gave him a break later on, so how long was the break? We’re helping our newly rescued 1 year old sweetheart and he needs a lot of training: leash pulling, crate sleeping, no jumping on people: but I don’t want to exhaust him. So how often do we train for how long, etc...?

Loved this video. My 5 month old Mini Schnauzer did great with this training. We started in the house, then the backyard. We did 10-15 minutes, 2-3 times a day. It took about 4 days and she was perfect. Time to go to the next level, we started in the driveway, then the sidewalk to the corner. She loose-leash walks perfectly UNTIL I give her a treat. As soon as I give her the treat, she looks forward and just keeps on walking. I stop, wait for her to come to my side, give the "walk" command and she pays attention, until I give a treat. I know I have to treat to train, but what am I doing wrong?

The 3 D's: Distance Distraction Duration When any one of them goes up the other two must go down. Example: Stay command for a minute (long Duration), requires a short distance (for correction if the dog attempts to get up early), and little distraction (so the dog can focus on the command).

Question for Steve or other's with experience: my 5 month old lab will sometimes just hold position on walks, especially towards the end or in warmer weather, and focus on anything but me. I recently started the "with me" training in the house but we are having a hard time transitioning that to our walks. This especially happens in the morning. Thoughts? Suggestions? Thank you in advance!

I've used these same techniques for blind dogs but I also add sound by "shuffling" one of my feet along just before giving the verbal cue and reward. In a matter of days they're very able to follow the sound of your feet, and as time goes on you'll need it less and less.

Brilliant video. I've a couple of questions if you can answer them. My dog is almost 2 yes old and isn't trained on the lease, can he still be trained?. Secondly, when your training your dog, for how long do you train him each day, presumably you can't train him all day and give him treats all day?.

I’m not profesional dog trainer, so I’m not sure if I’m doing this right. Something that helps me is that I make sure to I eat before I walk her in the morning, instead of feeding her breakfast first, I basically train her with her food so she has to listen to me and work for her food. When she’s full she tends to not listen

When walking my dog wants to go check out his favorite trees, shrubs, etc. I try to anticipate this and say “leave it”. Is “with me” a better choice in those situations? I’ve also been using leave it when we approach trash on the ground, etc. Thank you, your videos are extremely helpful!!

As long as you use your “with me” while your dog is a on a loose leash, that can work. The moment that you leash goes tight though you need to use those leash pulses to get that attention back. Thanks for watching ~Ken

Practice more in lower distraction areas until you've built more of a reinforcement history. Put distractions out (paper plate with low value food on it for example) and then correct him if he gets distracted by it. By doing this, you're teaching the concept at an easier level before hitting the streets with all the BIG distractions around. Small steps that the dog can be successful at.

if the dog is already used to you saying "leave it" then don't change what you say, for the benefit of the dog's understanding.... stay consistent... the fewer syllables used the better. one word is more than enough for any situation.

Thanks for this really great video. My question is are we meant to practice this until our puppy is properly trained before taking her for walks or can we take her for a walk now and practice this type of training every so often? She's 5 mths old and when we take her for a walk she still pulls, darts and tugs so much.

Make sure they know you have a VERRRY GOOD, VERY SMELLY treat, i found Caesar's medley trio works, or smelly sausage or cheese. Get them familiar with the crinkle sound of the bag in your pocket. After you train them, don't give it often. My big dogs were never trained with treats, but as an old person, with them newly getting leash training, I needed a fast response from them. They caught on quickly with a smelly treat. Now all I have to do is crinkle the bag and it breaks their obsessive focus on another dog. Training becomes much easier.

Do you have any suggestions for when my dog pulls while I'm in an electric wheelchair? He walks too far forward the minute I engage the controller. I stop and he moves back in position. But then when I only start to move forward, he's ahead of me again...pulling. I've tried not going in a straight line but adding turns, using a nose target to keep him in place and lots of food rewards for being in position. Nothing is changing. Thank you for any advice you can give me.
