good to see my old friend ,i did a course with the Forestry Commission to operate this baby and had it on site for just £100 per year ,ufortunately during a stock take it had to be sent back ,but i made good use of it ,first day it arrived all the boats in Ballachulish had new running boards ,a fantastic machine ,coupled with a cundy peeler !

My goodness, what a saw! I've never seen a vintage self contained saw like that here in Canada. Ours were all belt or PTO drive. Now smaller ones are available, but nothing that I know of that can compare with yours.

imo that is a wonderful saw, very productive and well designed. should be far more popular on the market except for the safety concerns. it seems alot of people are afraid of buzz saws, but on the other hand, many men wish they had a saw like that. great video.

Engine will give you a clue, the Petter AVA2 was in production from 1956 to 1966.

Hi, do you know the wire diameter, outside diameter and free length of the springs, the company has a different spring today with that part number 😢 thank you!!

Hi Thanks for your reply. I think I will keep it as original as possible and have the original blade sharpened. The riving knife is already on so that's a bonus. 2x Bryce injectors required and it's ready to go. Have an even older one with an lister LD2 engine and original Spitfire MK1 wheels and tyres on it.

What type of blade did you put on it HSS or Tungsten tipped? Did you fit the end roller on the bed or was it with the bench. The one I am restoring is almost identical but without the roller and minus the ripping guide . If you know where I can get hold of either or both I would like to know. If you change your mind with regard to selling let me know.

As far as I am aware, there is no HSS blade option - HSS being a little prone to shattering! This machine came with a carbon steel blade - and they are pretty good so long as you don't saw timber that's been dragged through mud & dirt. Tungsten tipped blades are available from Atkinson Walker (Sheffield) and if you tell them it's for a McConnel they will know the details - the bore and pin hole remained standard for machines in this size range right up until the latest models. There is different tooth geometry and other details, depending on if you want a general purpose blade, or a ripping blade or a crosscut only blade. They also made me a laser cut riving knife from sawblade steel.... it's VERY dangerous to rip without one! As to the ripping guide, it's not as handy as it seems. The guard support prevents sheet material being cut as it's on the wrong side of the table..... I intend to make a reverse handed guide and change the position of the guard support to allow the cutting of sheet material. Also the present design of the ripping guide means it's not quick or easy to remove it... so it's in the way if you don't want to use it. Again, when I make a replacement, it will be quick - release. Mine came with the end roller - it's described as an optional extra in the sales literature, as is the length stop which I do not have. Any competent metal fabricator / agricultural engineer will be able to make you one.

Nice old saw bench. It looks original in most parts. Do you want to sell it?
@galvanizedsankey58548 жыл бұрын
haha thanks for the interest but it's not for sale. They crop up pretty regularly on Ebay and in farm machinery auctions, there's quite a lot of them about. There is a bigger model out there with a 40" diameter blade and a more powerful engine, but for commercial use this era of machine doesn't really comply with woodworking machinery requirements. I've had a few scary moments with this one. Good luck with your search.

I dare say some scary moments. Nowhere to hide because you're right with it. I better stick to my chainsaw as awkward as I am. Good post! I really like the Petters.
