I don’t like the “tech” look so much as I like a more woven pattern. I like when it’s more like a traditional superhero costume but with some added stitching, maybe some padding or a minor amount of texture. Batman Noel is about as busy as I like a charater like Batman to look but I also love that suit, Gotham by gaslight as well. It feels real world without being cliched “real world version”. It’s still fantastical, it’s still a guy in a costume rather than body armour, but it’s still close enough to the classic cape and cowl hero-in-tights aesthetic.

When it is characters with no outright superpowers (I.E. Batman, Green Arrow, Daredevil, etc) I want them to look as armored as possible, because is drives home the fact that they are just people in a fancy suit. But with characters like Wonder Woman, Superman, Flash, etc, whose own skin is stronger than most conventional armor, I like it to look more spandex-y and for lack of a better word ‘comic-book-y’.

That's crazy, because I love The New 52 costumes. They look more realistic & reasonable to fighting. Those old school suits that y'all nostalgia heads love so much, makes me think of the cheap costumes you'd buy at an adult Halloween costume shop like Ricky's during Halloween or on Amazon. That stuff reflects the Adam West batman. Too old & outdated. How is that material suppose to stop a bullet?

I like the panelling look on figures. It gives them an updated look with interesting texture to look at instead of just spandex stretched out impossibly to define every single muscle.

It doesn't have to be "techy" but I like suit designs with more stuff going on than just a smooth uniform. The Batfleck suit is a good example, they textured it and made seams in places to make it look more interesting than just a grey suit.

If you have characters who are basically humans (Batman, Nightwing, Moon Knight, Daredevil) I prefer a utilitarian look. Something that seems to be made for a fighter who might need to protect himself from blades, bullets etc. But with the likes of Spider-Man or Superman I like the smooth look better. They are either invulnerable to almost any physical harm or have super-powers that make it easier to avoid being injured. However, my biggest pet peeve is dressing fighter/warrior types in spandex. To my mind the likes of Thor, Hercules, Wonder Woman should be wearing some sort of armor. Yes, they are deities and are almost unkillable but ther represent warrior cultures and armor has been used as a status symbol in pretty much every such culture throughout human history. Plus they ofter fight against other mythological beings who can realistically hurt them so divine armor makes sense. That's why my favourite looks for Thor are the ones from the latter parts of Simonson's and Jurgens' runs.

I genuinely like this Batman design & picked this figure up, but something about the look of it kept me from opening it. It just looked odd to me. But ya, like you said, it's mainly the small torso. The head & neck also look off to me from the front. I do usually like 'tech detail' on costumes and even on this specific design, but I don't like the way it was executed on this figure at all. It just doesn't look right. I was hoping your review would give me a reason to open it, but you've only confirmed all the odd things going on with this figure. I am glad that you're reviewing more McFarlane DC Multiverse figures though! Your expertise is sorely needed, especially when it comes to this line.

Other than not having the purple on the cape I love the figure. It really captures capullo’s art really well. I have a few of his figures from dc collectibles from a long time ago. He’ll fit nicely with them.

DC has so many characters, why so many Batmans. Can we get more variety. McFarlane needs to give us more Teen Titans, Young Justice or Justice League cartoon characters. I'm also tired of seeing wave 1 figures that for some reason don't go on sale. Its hard to find certain characters so I pre order them from Bigbadtoystore.

I have issues with the left thigh on mine as well. Not just the split but it falls off the ball peg every time I move it. It pops back on easily but as soon as I try to pose him it just falls off again.

I think Capullo is a great artist but his Batman design really doesn't translate very well to action figure/3D. IMO that cowl looks ridiculous and the whole thing has some very awkward proportions. Even without taking aspects that are more flaws in the figure such a those, I'm not a fan of that bat symbol or the purple cape. It'd be cool to get Mafex to attempt a Capullo Batman and add their own spin.

I prefer something in between like how Batman looks in the cover for detective comics #1000/the default suit in all of the Batman Arkham games or Spider-Man in more recent comics and also the classic suit from PS4 for most characters but then for people like Superman that costume shouldn't be armored at all it should just be cloth. Another good example would be the Daredevil and Ultimate Alliance 3 which is a mixture of his traditional costume and the Netflix season 2 costume.

At this point the articulation gripes with Mcfarlane figures are becoming quite consistent. No forward torso movement, limited upper thigh articulation, can't look up, and potential diaper splits. If they could address that in 2021 that would be super.....man. I like panel/seam lines and texture. I find it aesthetically please. Like don't go overboard like they did with Superman new52. Just make make the costumes look like skin with they aren't. In action figures/statues it also gives the light something to grab. Though the caveat there is a I prefer sculpted panels. The Hasbro let's use paint apps for everything doesn't work.

i prefer a mix of it. not too panel-y and weirdly metallic like the new 52, but more along the lines of young justice s1 and 2, where they had classic-ish looks with minimal panel lines to imply more than just spandex.

Techy stuff looks good on batman, its more grounded in reality. If i saw a superhero prowling the streets at night in spandex with a pair of briefs on over his trousers, i would piss myself laughing. I get why people want the "classic" look, but dressed like that it would be hard to take them seriously

I gotta say I'm a sucker for techy designs but that's because I grew up with hero movies and the transformers movies and not with comic books and very few cartoons. But I do know that there are times when it can go too far.

Not a bad figure foe the price point and McFarlane Toys are trying but they still have a long way to go. More range on the articulation, specially the head going up and the torso going forward. I also can't understand (other then Mr. Todd throwing a fit) why they choose to use single joints on some of their thinner arms and legs when they could easily implement double joints vastly increasing the range on both the elbows and knees. The scale is also something that needs work, the Merciless should be smaller, the Doomsday Batman should be bigger (the BAF should have been Doomsday Batman that way both characters could've been on the right scale) and some other characters scale is also way off. Good overall sculpt (besides some pre-posing sculpt that I'm almost sure Mr. Todd tries to include every time no one's looking) and paint but that can always improve, it goes without saying (even though I'm saying it). I prefer paneled. Tights are fine if there's wrinkling or other texturing in the sculpt. A lot of Legends figures look like they were sculpted to be nude and then the figure is molded in a single color for the tights. It comes off looking cheap. As an aside, how is it that a Batman figure made it into production when he can't pose without ripping his underwear? Another half assed McFarlane product. How many Batmans is this in a single year?

I’m diggin the "panel" look personally. I have a question that I hope u might answer. Is there a type of paint that will stick to the cape? I painted some “blood” on the face and in the tears of his suit and would like to paint the inside of the cape purple. I pretty much know for a fact that my acrylics will crack and not stick well at all. Is there a way to seal the acrylic or a different kind of paint that would work?

Back in the day Todd did an album cover for a hip hop group called Swollen Members. Who are also known As battle axe warriors. Those axes look just like the axes they use. Do you think thats a reference to Swollen Members?
